Visual art notes: The art of the night sky, textiles and steampunk ...

Get punked

Gothic sensibilities have combined with a nostalgia for a simpler brass-and-hydraulic era to create the visual genre of steampunk. And what better place than The Leonardo museum of art and technology to take a class in steampunk figure sketching? The Lab @ Leo will provide Victorian-attired models, with, of course, steampunk accoutrements. A small fee required and basic drawing materials will be provided.

In ?Perception,? multimedia artists Verl Adams, an architect and designer; graphic designer Blake Palmer; and photographer Miranda Whitlock offer new ways of seeing. An artists reception is scheduled Friday at 6 p.m. in conjunction with the Salt Lake Gallery Stroll.

Art weaves

The textile art of John Hess is hanging at A Gallery. The solo show features larger, woven wall pieces (cotton twill weave with painted geometrics). The exhibit also includes a series of smaller, woven works in black and white, a series of woven, painted mazes and some folded, double-woven reliefs.

Joe Carter left engineering to pursue his love of painting. But his engineering background still carries through in solving the problems of naturalistic painting. Carter?s work records objects that he has collected for their quality of being considered mundane or worthless, though they reflect the culture that considers them so.

Look up

Local astro and nighttime landscape photographer Royce Bair will speak at the Salt Lake Print Society meeting. Bair?s light-painted landscapes incorporate astronomy features of the night sky. His work has also appeared in National Geographic and The Smithsonian magazines.
