OT: Grill I have to finish | Machinist

We are having a few guests this weekend for a grill party. I decided to build a bigger grill. It is four feet in diameter. I wanted to be able to raise and lower the grill about the coals easily so I welded a trailer jack on the side and welded the grill to it. That enables me to raise and lower the grill as well as easily swing it out of the way to tend to the fire. I still have a few hours more work but it will go to the sandblaster on Friday morning.

P.S. It is somewhat to due with machining. I used my horizontal mill to drill some holes. The mill is in the picture so does that qualify it to be posted on this forum?

Daughter had to get in the picture! She is such a ham.

I like my steaks medium rare. Pesky kids seem to come when and were they want, don?t they? Kids are nice too but even nicer when they?re somebody else?s. I can just leave when my plate is empty.

Did I mention I like my stteak medium rare and that grill should be big enough to feed me in one sitting. Cool idea with the jack. I like it.

Did you make sure there?s no plastic parts in the jack?

Great idea, just wondering if the chosen part is going to hold up.

(Joke Alert!!!)
Im sorry but that BBQ looks awful, the kids nice looking however. Maybe you should stick to making kids. they seem to have been turning out better.
(/Joke Alert!!!)
But in all honesty, the inside of that BBQ needs a good wire brushing or sandblasting. is that rust or paint on the inside? Either way id remove it, and make sure theres a drain hole in the bottom for any water that gets in to drain out. The lift mechanism is really nice however. I wonder why regular bbq?s don?t have that. Is it heavy/stable enough to surive 20lbs~+ on the grill with it extended out like that?
Some fool will surely swing it out as far as it can go if you turn your back on it, so you might also want some stops to prevent it swinging further out then needed (making it more unstable)

Random fact: Olive oil makes a good ?food service? lubracant for jacks!
Lard (Burger fat!) probley works too, but I bet it gose rancid.

The paint on the outside might start releaseing fumes on the first cook too. Id highly recommend getting that sucker red hot with coals for awhile before your first cooking.

PS: that hat looks underdone. I like my hats well done.

You are not going to cook that kid are you ?

The jack is made up of three different jacks. There are no plastic parts.

The jacks were rated for 1500 kilo?s. So the weight of the grill plus meat will be no problem. The grill can swing all the way around. when it is at 180? it does not come close to tipping the grill. The kettle part of the grill came off a propane tank that I am building a smoker out of. Big smoker!

The whole unit will be sandblasted on Friday. NO worries about the paint and rust.

You all are invited for a grill party. I will supply the food and drinks and a place to sleep. You just need to get here to the Black Forest. Lets say the Fourth of July! I hope to then have my sheep shearing machine in service. You all can then help me to refine some of the rough spots and have a go at shearing a sheep!

Forest, My daughter is not a pesky kid?.she is an angel, but you can come to the party and find out for yourself.

Add a blower motor and fire brick so you can use it as a forge.

Eh, I think 2000f is a little high to cook burgers at.

2000F is OK to cook burgers?.just a question of timing!

Black

Any picture of your smoker ?
I need to make one and I?m looking for ideas.

Yes a 2 speed stainless rack conveyor with a drop so it flips the burgers midway with a varible speed, make it wide for a bun toaster and a cheese extruder to the side and a set of cam driven arms to flip bacon on the burger after the cheese hits it.:)

Cool grill, looking good, thanks for sharing. Its funny how a deadline will bring motivation to finish a project.

I haven?t finished the smoker yet. I spent so much time talking about building my smoker that the wife went out and bought a small patio style smoker to shut me up. After I smoked the first meat for her. She told me to get myself back to the shop and finish the big smoker. She?s addicted!

But the smoker will be a vertical smoker. I have built about twenty smokers in my life, but never a vertical. Some smokers were big enough to require tandem axles!

Sorry Forest, but here?s that pesky kid again! This pesky kid loves to be in the shop with me and help. She loves tools and Barbie?s!

looks like you could hang the whole sheep / pig/ cow, in that monster. . . .

would it not be just great of about 100 of us old machining dudes showed up on the 4th of july at your barby ? ? ? ? ?

100 might be a squeeze as to sleeping accommodations. But 50 would be OK.

Nice looking BBQ and better looking kid. The last time we were in Germany the price of good steaks and the price of silver were nearly the same. Are you going to be roasting Brats? BBQ Bratwurst mit mittlesharf Senf is the best!

If he does work for sheep farmers then he eats good, they taste mighty fine.

How many 50# bags of charcoal? Our school had a grill, made out of a fuel oil tank, took six bags and two hours to get things rolling enough to cook burgers??

But MAN was it great!!!!!

Sheep farmers don?t taste good grilled. You have to smoke them for 10 hours to get them tender enough to eat!
