AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) ? One of the most exciting times is also one of the most stressful for a young couple in Denver. They are expecting a baby, but the mom-to-be is now also fighting breast cancer.
4 On Your Side Health Specialist Kathy Walsh met with the Addisons Tuesday during Sarah?s chemotherapy.
Sarah and Ryan Addison asked Walsh to tell their story to let people know that early detection of breast cancer is critical and that their fight for their family is winnable.
Sarah and Ryan fell in love in college and married in 2010, but ?happily ever after? hit a snag. Sarah is just 25 years old. It?s rare for someone her age to develop breast cancer. It?s even more unusual that she is pregnant.
?There?ll probably be somewhere between 200 and 300 young women in the same situation as Sarah,? Dr. Virginia Borges with University of Colorado Hospital said.
Sarah was weeks into her pregnancy when she found a lump. The same day Sarah and Ryan learned she had cancer they also found out she was having a boy.
?I didn?t know if I would have to choose to go forward with treatment and lose the baby or postpone treatment and maybe compromise my own health,? Sarah said.
Now Sarah is aggressively fighting her cancer at the University of Colorado Hospital with assurances from Borges that her growing boy will still thrive.
?We certainly feel that we?ll be able to safely treat Sarah for the safe delivery of her child,? Borges said.
Sarah will have a double mastectomy in November. The baby is due late December.
The Addisons admit they?re scared.
?I?m not worried about the baby, I?m worried about Sarah,? Ryan said.
The couple is closer than ever. The two shaved their heads together a week ago.
?Now more so than ever am I totally focused and committed to taking care of her however I can,? Ryan said.
Despite all the worry, when the Addisons talk about their baby boy their eyes light up. Ryan has plans for him to play any sport, as long as it?s baseball. After all the baby has been through already, Sarah knows he?ll be strong.
