The much-anticipated Google Nexus 10 has finally arrived and it's looking pretty sweet. With such an awesome screen and Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, the tablet looks nearly perfect. Besides some nice specs, what else does Google's tablet have to offer? Is it able to match Apple's new 4th generation iPad?
To answer these questions fully, we?re comparing the Google Nexus 10 with the new iPad below. Read on to find out who wins!
Design
The design found on the Nexus 10 and iPad is quite different, but let's start with the iPad. The iPad is very thin and extremely light. It is really all display in a single aluminum unibody and not much bezel. The iPad looks and feels sexy.
The Google Nexus 10, meanwhile, features a more clunky design in comparison. It has a considerable amount of bezel and a light, black unibody frame. It feels very light in the hand, yet durable.
Winner -- Apple iPad! Both devices have amazing designs, but the aluminum unibody of the iPad is much more attractive. It's also a design consumers recognize instantly.
Specs
As mentioned in previous posts, Apple?s 4th generation iPad runs on an A6x quad-core Cortex-A15 processor. This CPU is a real beast and offers an amazing GPU for great gaming. It also makes the iPad extremely smooth. The iPad also comes in three flavors: 16GB, 32GB and 64GB, but offers no support for removable memory.
The Google Nexus 10, on the other hand, is powered by an equally powerful Exynos 5 CPU. The 5 series of Exynos processors are usually reserved for Apple products, so it's interesting to see it show up in the Nexus 10. In comparison to the A6x, it's pretty equal.
Like the 4th gen iPad, the Google Nexus also features 16GB and 32GB storage variants, though a 64GB version is not there. The Nexus 10 also doesn't have any removable memory support.
Winner -- Draw! The A6x and the Exynos 5 are equally matched.
Screen
The iPad features a 9.7-inch retina display that operates at a pixel density of 326PPI. From my own tests, the display offers great color reproduction and images look extremely crisp and clear. All in all, the display on the iPad is great.
In comparison, the Google Nexus 10 sports a dazzling 2560 x 1600 high resolution display. HD movies are more vivid and photos will look as clear as the day you took them on the device. Does the Nexus 10 screen match the iPad's display? Absolutely.
Winner -- Draw!
Software
Apple's iPad is powered by iOS 6, and while the operating system is still the most polished in the land, it is a bit one dimensional and a little boring. It is extremely easy to use though, so it definitely has that going for it.
The Google Nexus 10 features Android 4.2, Google's all new mobile OS. The new OS is similar to Jelly Bean, offering just a few more tweaks, including a new Google Now app and home screen UI. It is equal to, if not better than iOS 6.
So who wins in terms of software? Apple, of course, as it holds the app store advantage. The company has hundreds of thousands of iPad apps in its store, whereas the Nexus 10 probably doesn't even have 5,000. Apple always wins when it comes to apps.
Winner -- Apple iPad.
And the overall winner is...
4th generation Apple iPad.
The devices are, in most areas, evenly matched, but the design and OS on the iPad is just better. The Google Nexus 10 is a big step in the right direction for Google, but it has a little more improvement to go, especially with regards to apps.
Maybe next year, Google.
