PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT)- State leaders got a first-hand look at the destruction left behind by Friday's tornado.
The storm damaged hundreds of properties in Petersburg -- mostly in the southern part of the city.
Monday morning, the secretary of public safety, Marla Decker, ?and others took a tour to assess the damage.?
The storm caused trees?to fall?on homes.??Power lines and?other debris could be seen scattered in the roadway.
Furniture was even?swept up a tree. The damaged stretch for about three miles.
The storm left a hole in Wilhemenia Wiley's roof.
Her neighbor's garage, in the East Walnut Hill area, was ripped a part.
The secretary of public safety said she's here to help.
"The state is here to assist and we've been assisting since the response stage and we're going to work with them to get through what needs to happen," said Decker.?
City crews are working overtime to clean-up the mess.
It's estimated? that 450 tons of debris has to be removed.
"We have 60 employees, nearly 20 trucks, and 10 other pieces of equipment helping to pick up this debris," said Steven Hicks, Director of Public Works for Petersburg.
The majority of damage is in the East Walnut Hill, Battlefield Park, and Oakhurst neighborhoods.
The storm carried Jerry Beard's garage off his property.

?As for Wiley and her neighbors -- ?they're hopeful the secretary of public safety's visit will lead to federal dollars to fix-up what mother nature ripped-up.
