VINNIE VINZETTA: State of Texas football drama

Can anybody remember so much drama, hype and curiosity spread between Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, Texas Tech, Houston and SMU heading into their respective off seasons? Dude!? This is gonna be good stuff!

Big man?staying in?Baylor?

The early drama of course should be settled in a couple of days. Last week the reports were that RG3, your Heisman winner, was off and running to the NFL draft. Now that appears to have been, perhaps, premature. The arguments are rather simple when you consider them. What else does he have to prove? Does he have interest in winning back-to-back Heisman trophies? Probably not.

His sole reason I would think, other than getting a degree now (which we would have to respect and admire) would be to get Baylor to a BCS game next season. My only comment to that is that every "expert" I've read and watched on television says the Bears are not a serious threat to get to a BCS game, let alone play for the national championship.

Logic would seem to suggest that he will go to the professional ranks, but who can say for sure? CBS Sports reported Sunday afternoon that Griffin III will meet with BU head coach Art Briles early into the week to figure things out. There's really that much to consider? Fascinating, if you ask me.

QB conundrum

Texas Longhorn head coach Mack Brown says David Ash has the lead heading into spring ball in Austin. But how much stock will you honestly put into that? Ash is clearly physically talented, both passing and rushing from the QB position. But I sure wouldn't sleep on the progress that Case McCoy might show. I think he's got some of that moxy that his big brother had with the Burnt Orange.

And the UT QB conundrum might look less stressful when you consider other areas of the roster. UT appears to have a very stingy defense and Coach Macker has an amazing young group of running backs that he'll have a hard time keeping happy when it comes to spreading opportunities around that depth chart. Again, two good problems to have.

Momentum in Aggieland

And oh, what about those Aggies!? Conventional wisdom seems to be that both the Ags and Mizzou will have a hard time out of the shoots against SEC competition. Those are only opinions and speculation of course, but new head coach Kevin Sumlin will be baptized quick into the world of SEC football. All they do lately is win national championships, right?

I would suspect he'll recruit well rather quickly, if not immediately, against the likes of Texas, Oklahoma and others looking to pipeline the great state of Texas. And not to create more drama than necessary in Aggieland, he might want to seriously try and understand how they blew so many second half leads this now past season. Just sayin'.

Red Raiders rolling

The mighty Red Raiders went to a bowl game in their first season under head coach Tommy Tuberville, but stumbled -- to say the least. Tommy T's defense in Lubbock couldn't have stopped a tumbleweed in 2011. Twice they gave up 66 points. Twice!

And while it still makes me shake my head that TTU faithful still somehow manage to live in a dream world that Mike Leach will make his triumphant return, it does at the very least tell me one thing for sure: The South Plains is still not all the way behind Coach Tubs.

Hot in Houston

OK, so the Houston Cougars are on the map. But will they stay? Can they stay? Part of me says yes, of course! They have Houston Texas to recruit from; should it really be that hard? In that conference, not in my opinion.

They do have a new head coach, and sure, their previous head coach will likely take many recruits from that area -- not to mention that College Station has always heavily recruited the Bayou City, so don't expect that to change. But in their less competitive conference, Conference USA, the Cougars, fresh off a 13-1 season and a bowl victory over Penn State, should have plenty of momentum headed into the 2012 season.

Pony power

And right quick on SMU, another C-USA team. They were just bowl victorious the other day as well. The Ponies finished the season with a mark of 8-5. Head Coach June Jones has been just what the NCAA doctor ordered for Southern Methodist.

Rocked by scandal years ago, it seems at this point SMU has traveled a LONG ROAD to see positive results like these. I for one am curious to see how far Mr. Jones can take this one time power program. Just maybe a few folks, who a few years ago did not believe, just might be changing their tune about that prominent Christian Methodist University in Dallas!
