(AP) ? Deutsche Bank said Tuesday it plans to cut about 1,900 jobs, most of them outside Germany, as its earnings fell 46 percent in the second quarter as the European debt crisis hurt its investment banking and trading activities.

The bank, which employs nearly 101,000 people, said about 1,500 of the job cuts will be in its corporate banking and securities divisions and in related infrastructure areas. The headcount reduction will contribute some ?350 million to an overall target of ?3 billion ($3.8 billion) in savings.

Shares in the bank, which had been lower after the earnings report, jumped on the news of the jobs cuts and estimated savings. They were up 3.2 percent at ?25.58 by early afternoon in Frankfurt.

In its earnings report, Germany's largest bank said net profit fell to ?661 million from ?1.233 billion in the same three months a year ago. Income fell at its investment banking division as fewer client companies came to the bank for its services helping them issue shares.

Revenue from trading debt securities ? one of the investment categories most affected by the crisis ? was down. The company said that was partly due to the company taking "deliberately lower levels of risk" due to subdued trading volumes.

Revenues were down 6 percent to ?8.0 billion. A major hit to revenue came at the corporate banking and securities division, where share underwriting and debt trading are located, falling by ?451 million to ?3.5 billion.

The earnings statement was the first reported under new co-CEOs Anshu Jain and Juergen Fitschen, who took over from Josef Ackermann in May.

"The European sovereign debt crisis continues to weigh on investor confidence and client activity across the bank," it said.

European governments such as Spain and Italy are struggling with high levels of debt, and the prospect they might default or need bailouts has unnerved markets.

The earnings release added detail to an early release of a few numbers last week.

Samsung accuses Apple of ?ambush litigation? in 3G patent trial

News

Samsung accused Apple of ?ambush litigation? on Friday in Sydney?s Federal Court by suddenly raising new defences against the South Korean company?s 3G patent infringement allegations.

The two companies? Australian court battle started Monday with opening statements and preliminary arguments. Apple accuses Samsung of infringing touchscreen patents it holds, while Samsung alleges Apple infringes three 3G patents.

Samsung attorney Neil Young accused Apple of violating court rules by bringing up new points regarding how the baseband chipsets in its iPhone 4 and 4S models and second iPad function.

The issues, which arose as the parties delved into highly technical issues regarding how the chipsets work, threatened to cause a major problem, but Justice Annabelle Claire Bennett said she was reluctant to delay the case.

Friday?s discussions mainly revolved around Samsung?s Australian patents No. 2005202512 and No. 2006241621, which deal with power control and the format of packet headers used for 3G data transmissions.

Apple?s lawyers argued this week that it implements UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunications System) standards in its products. Samsung?s patents are incorporated into international 3G standards, but Apple contends there are variations in which the standards can be implemented which do not infringe on Samsung?s patents.

Apple?s new defences should have been brought up earlier to allow Samsung to gather evidence for its allegations, including examining source code for the relevant chipsets from Qualcomm and Intel, Young said.

?We?ve had no fair opportunity of dealing with this,? he said.

Further, Young said there are restrictions on access to Intel?s source code, which could affect Samsung?s case, and he was not sure how Intel would respond to a request for source code. He said Samsung?s legal team did have access to Qualcomm?s source code.

Apple lawyer Cameron Moore said the chipsets are highly complex and not made by Apple. There are many aspects of the chipsets? technology ?that Apple simply does not know.?

?We are zeroing down to a very specific piece of technology,? Moore said. He contended that Samsung is required to prove that Apple is infringing.

The trial, scheduled to run intermittently through October, will resume Aug. 6. The court will eventually deal with Apple?s alleged violation of Samsung?s patent No. 2005239657, which deals with rate matching patterns used in data transmission, as well as Apple?s accusations regarding its touchscreen patents.

(AP) ? The number of people unemployed across the 17 countries that use the euro hit a record high in June, official figures showed Tuesday, in a stark reminder that Europe's debt crisis has ramifications beyond the financial markets.

Eurostat, the EU's statistics office, said 17.801 million people were out of work in the eurozone in June. That was 123,000 more than May, and is the highest level since the euro was formed in 1999. The increase was the 14th in a row and means that around 2.25 million people have lost their jobs since April 2011.

Despite the increase, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in June was unchanged at a record 11.2 percent. Without Germany's relatively-low unemployment rate of 5.4 percent, the wider figures would be much worse.

Even then, the eurozone unemployment is nearly three percentage points higher than the U.S.'s equivalent 8.2 percent. Europe's unemployment rate for May had originally been estimated at 11.1 percent.

"Another horrible set of labor market data for the eurozone, which bodes ill for consumer spending and growth prospects," said Howard Archer, chief European economist at IHS Global Insight.

The figures will add to the pressure on policymakers to get a grip of the debt crisis, which has hit investor confidence in the eurozone, forced five countries to seek external aid and pushed companies to cut their staff numbers.

The 17 countries that use the euro are struggling as economies across the region face deepening recessions. Spain and Italy, the two chief trouble spots, are threatened with a financial collapse that could tear the 13-year old currency union apart and rock the global economy.

Hopes have risen over the past week ? at least in financial markets ? that Europe is preparing new measures to handle the crisis. Last week, European Central Bank president Mario Draghi said the bank "is ready to do what it takes to preserve the euro. Believe me, it will be enough."

Those comments raised expectations that, at the very least, the ECB will ramp up its bond-buying program in the hope of keeping a lid on Spanish and Italian borrowing rates. Such a move would reduce the economic uncertainty surrounding a country, helping it to get its finances under control.

The ECB meets this Thursday to decide on its benchmark interest rate. It could use this opportunity to announce any other measures.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Federal Reserve meets Wednesday and could also decide to take action to stimulate a weakening economy ? such as embarking on another round of quantitative easing, which is designed to free up the flow of money in the U.S. economy.

"Irrespective of what happens on Thursday and whether Draghi delivers or not, the economic data out of Europe is nothing short of woeful," said Michael Hewson, markets analyst at CMC Markets.

It's particularly grim in Spain, which is at the forefront of Europe's debt crisis concerns. It had the highest unemployment rate across the eurozone of 24.8 percent. Greece's rate was not far behind at 22.5 percent, though the latest figures available are for April. In Greece and Spain, every other person aged under 25 is unemployed.

Many countries that use the euro, including France and Italy, also have double-digit unemployment rates.

Even if new anti-crisis measures are to be announced this week, many analysts think the eurozone appears headed for recession.

Germany, Europe's biggest economy, is showing increasing signs of coming off the boil. With growth dropping sharply and demand for its high-value exports set to fall, German unemployment is expected to start rising again.

Figures earlier from Germany's Federal Labor Agency showed the unadjusted jobless rate climbing from 6.6 percent in June to 6.8 percent in July as the typical seasonal increase of school-leavers signing on for unemployment benefits was reinforced by a gradual slowing in the labor market.

Elsewhere, Eurostat revealed Tuesday that inflation was unchanged at 2.4 percent in July. Though that remains above the ECB's mandated target of keeping price increases just below 2 percent, the recent trend has been downward and analysts expect that to continue.

A stagnating economy and rising unemployment, which combine to keep a lid on wage increases, are expected to push inflation back below target over the coming months. Lower energy inflation is also expected to ease inflationary pressures.

This opens the door for the ECB to cut its benchmark rate below its current record low of 0.75 percent in addition to any anti-crisis measures it announces.

(AP) ? Syrian government tanks backed by attack helicopters swept into Aleppo on Saturday as the regime launched an assault to regain control of the country's largest city a week after rebels seized several neighborhoods.

The high-stakes battle for Aleppo, a commercial hub and the country's largest city, has raised fears among activists and the international community that a new massacre could be looming.

Even Syria's longtime ally, Russia, added to the chorus of alarm Saturday, saying a "tragedy" was imminent in Aleppo. But Russia's foreign minister said it was unrealistic to expect the Syrian army to stand by while rebels were trying to take over major cities.

Saturday's fighting was centered around the southwestern neighborhood of Salaheddine, one of the first areas seized by the rebels since they began a push to control the city after being routed from the capital, Damascus.

Activists said helicopters were strafing the area and rebels faced artillery barrages and regime tanks trying to push into the neighborhood.

An Aleppo-based activist, Mohammed Saeed, said the government counterattack had begun and rebels were fighting back in several other areas as well.

"Thanks be to God, they haven't succeeded in entering any of the neighborhoods yet," he said.

President Bashar Assad's forces have been massing outside the city over the past few days, and Saeed said rebels from around the country also have been pouring in to help defend the areas under their control.

"About 1,000 fighters have come from the Free Syrian Army from outside the province of Aleppo to help," he said, referring to the main rebel group.

State television, in a rare comment on the situation in Aleppo, reported that government forces had inflicted heavy losses on groups of terrorists, the term the regime uses for the rebels.

The pro-government daily newspaper Al-Watan called it "the mother of all battles" in a banner headline Saturday.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the government attack started before dawn with the sustained bombardment of several areas, followed by the movement of armored vehicles backed by attack helicopters.

Based on reports from its network on the ground, the Observatory reported attacks in the northeastern neighborhood of Sakhour as well as other areas, and said the rebels had disabled a number of regime armored vehicles.

The international community has expressed growing concern that there could be major bloodshed if Syrian troops retake Aleppo. But Western nations and their allies have found themselves powerless to prevent the situation from deteriorating despite a series of diplomatic efforts, including a cease-fire agreement that never took effect.

"The regime's destruction of its own city shows the level of oppression that has been reached in Syria," said Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmed Davutoglu from the central city of Konya. "We will do our best to stop this oppression."

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stood by the regime.

"Now the city of Aleppo is occupied by the armed opposition; another tragedy is imminent there," he said. "How can it be hoped that in such a situation the government will simply give in, say 'Okay, I wasn't right, overthrow me, change the regime ? it's simply unrealistic."

Russia has been a key source of support for Syria, although Moscow officials in recent months have said they are simply taking a more even-handed approach while the West offers blind support to the rebels.

It has been a difficult two weeks for the Syrian government with rebel assaults first on the capital, Damascus, then on Aleppo, as well as several high-profile defections and a bomb that killed four top security officials.

The regime, however, launched a swift counteroffensive and quashed the assault on the capital with a combination of heavy weapons and house-to-house searches. Scores of people were killed. Opposition activists said they expected similar tactics in the coming days to keep Aleppo from falling into rebel hands.

The rebels are outgunned by the Syrian forces, making it difficult for them to hold any territory for long. But the rebels' run on Damascus and Aleppo suggests they could be gaining in power and organization.

With a population of about 3 million, Aleppo is Syria's commercial hub, a key pillar of support for Assad's regime.

If the rebels in Aleppo really try to make a stand against the regime, however, they risk being annihilated by superior firepower and may yet decide to withdraw to preserve their forces as what happened in Damascus last week.

Saudi Arabia and other nations have spoken positively of arming the rebels, though no country is known to be doing so.

Saudi King Abdullah announced a national campaign to collect money for "our brothers in Syria" on July 22, and on Saturday the country's press agency said Saudi donations had reached more than $72 million.

Late Friday, Syria's state-run TV said the army freed two Italian electrical engineers, along with two drivers and a Russian expert, who were captured eight days ago by militants.

The Italians were identified as Domenico Tedeschi, 36, and Oriano Cantani, 64. The report said they worked at the Deir Ali power plant, some 20 miles (30 kilometers) south of Damascus.

During a news conference in Damascus, Tedeschi told reporters they were kidnapped by five or six masked men, who intercepted their car as they drove to the airport.

"After a checkpoint, we were stopped by those people whose faces were covered by black masks," he said, adding: "We were very, very afraid, because we don't know anything."

He said the men were robbed and then kept at a small villa. "We think that a Syrian family was forced to keep us," he said, noting that they heard the voices of women and children.

"The Syrian army found us at midday on Friday and they organized everything to release us safe," he said.

Italian Foreign Minister Giulio Terzi welcomed the release of the two men and said in a statement that he looked forward to their speedy return to Italy.

Get On The Road To Repairing Your Credit Today | Creative ...

It may seem difficult to find the information you need to repair your credit while you are in the middle of your problem. We have several suggestions to help you fix your credit score. These tips can relieve you from stress and save time.

If you are unable to make minimum payments, contact the better business bureau for information on a trustworthy credit counseling service. Agents at these organizations can negotiate with creditors to set up payment plans for your debt, and they will teach you how to dig out and stay out of debt over time. Consumer credit counseling services can provide you with effective ways to better manage your money and pay off debt.

TIP! Make sure you thoroughly research into any credit repair agency or counselor before you do business with them. Many counselors are honest and helpful, but others may be less interested in actually helping you.

If your credit is poor, take the first step to repairing it by closing out the majority of your cards, leaving yourself just one to use. Then, try to arrange payments or transfer your balances to the one account you left open. Paying off one main credit card will be easier than paying off several cheaper ones.

Keeping a tight rein on the balances you carry on your credit cards is a good way to improve and safeguard your credit. If you currently have a $4000 limit on a card, you never want to have a balance of more than $3800. Even if have been consistent in making on time monthly payments, the more you owe on your card, the more damage you are doing to your credit score.

TIP! The best way to repair your credit is to pay your debts and pay bills on time when they are due. Credit counseling services could help.

Improve your credit score, as well as make some profit, through an installment account. All installment accounts must stay above the set monthly minimum, so only open one if you can afford it. If these accounts are properly managed, they can provide a quick boost to your credit score.

For some it may hard to finance their home due to having less than ideal credit. FHA loans are good options in these circumstances, because the federal government guarantees them. Even when the resources for making down payments or paying closing costs are lacking, FHA loans can help.

In order to fix your credit score, you must have a plan that will help you lower your debt and actually make an impact. Having a lot of debt has a negative impact on your credit score. In any case, there is no reason to pay for interest if it is not absolutely necessary. Create a budget that you can live with and devote as much of the rest to paying off debts, starting with the ones with the highest interest rate first. The less debt you have, the better your credit score will be.

TIP! A terrible credit situation would be having many different debts you can?t afford to pay back. Take the money you have for bills, and allocate a small amount to several creditors so you can make a little progress with each.

Do not spend beyond your means any longer. You will need to change the way you think. A lot of people rely on credit to maintain an unrealistic lifestyle, but when the credit runs out, all that?s left is a very big bill. Spend some significant time studying your finances, and set a realistic budget to which you can stick.

Hopefully you have found this information to be informative. While fixing your credit might seem like an uphill battle, once you follow this advice, you will have the chance to regain your credit. Make sure you are patient. If you keep at it, the rewards are well worth it

Cardinals' power show takes care of?Cubs

Associated Press Sports

updated 5:50 p.m. ET July 27, 2012

CHICAGO (AP) - The Cards almost had five of a kind.

Matt Holliday, Yadier Molina and Lance Berkman started a power show by the St. Louis Cardinals, who became the first team in eight years to hit a home run in each of the first five innings and went on to beat the Chicago Cubs 9-6 Friday.

Matt Carpenter and Allen Craig also connected off Travis Wood (4-6), whose five homers allowed matched the Cubs record.

Molina hit a two-run homer in the second, with the rest solo shots.

"The flags were blowing in, but the ball was still carrying," Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. "There were just a lot of hard hit balls. "Whenever you can mix five home runs in five innings, that's pretty impressive."

Carpenter put St. Louis ahead 7-6 when he homered on the first pitch of the fourth, and Craig homered into the left-field bleachers in the fifth. The previous team to homer in each of the first five innings was Houston against Colorado on Oct. 2, 2004, according to STATS LLC.

"All those balls were crushed," Holliday said. "None of those were cheap home runs. If the wind was blowing out, those would have been a lot more impressive."

Lance Lynn (13-4) tied New York's R.A. Dickey and Washington's Gio Gonzalez for the NL lead in wins despite allowing six runs and eight hits in five innings. Jason Motte completed four shutout innings for the Cardinals' bullpen, getting three outs for his 23rd save in 27 chances as St. Louis won for the seventh time in eight games.

"The offense carried me, and the bullpen came in and did what they do," Lynn said. "It was one of those days - a team win."

Lynn allowed one run in 19 innings during his first three July starts, but the Cubs' first three batters scored. Lynn also gave up three runs in the third as the Cubs rallied to tie 6-6 and ended a streak of 21 straight games in which the St. Louis starter pitched at least six innings - the club's longest stretch since 2004.

"It was hit or miss it seems like," said Lynn, who threw six scoreless innings in his previous start. "The time before I was able to make pitches and get out of innings with runners on. Today when they got the runner on they scored."

Rookie Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer for the Cubs, his sixth in 25 games since he was brought up from Triple-A Iowa.

"It's a good feeling to be in that kind of mindset at the plate," Rizzo said. "I just want to stick to it right now and keep going."

Berkman's third-inning homer gave him 1,200 career RBIs and was just his second home run this season. Berkman has reached base in 37 straight games dating to last July 31, the longest streak in the majors, but he has missed 68 games this year because of lower body injuries.

Holliday's solo homer in the first landed just to the left of the camera booth in center field. He added an RBI single in the seventh and singled in the ninth, leaving him with a .434 average, eight homers and 31 RBIs over his last 34 games. He's homered five times in 12 games against the Cubs this season.

Starlin Castro had three hits for the Cubs, including an RBI single in the first and a leadoff triple to center in the third.

Rizzo added an RBI single in the third and scored on Alfonso Soriano's double into the left-field corner, tying the game at 6-all. Rizzo's 28 hits in July are the most among NL rookies.

Wood gave up eight runs and seven hits in five innings and has allowed 22 earned runs in 15 2-3 innings since the All-Star break.

"He does have to keep the ball down," Cubs manager Dale Sveum said. "You're going to get away with that a little more against some other teams. This team, there's a reason why those left-handed numbers are what they are. If you make a mistake, they don't miss them."

The prior Cubs starter to give up five homers in a game was Carlos Zambrano, in his final start for Chicago last Aug. 12.

"Things didn't go as planned," Wood said. "I missed some pitches, and they didn't miss the pitches that I missed."

Chicago put two runners on in the eighth, bringing the potential tying run to the plate with one out, but Reed Johnson and Geovany Soto hit long flyouts off Marc Rzepczynski.

"I was real happy and impressed with the bullpen," Matheny said.

NOTES: In a pregame ceremony the Cubs honored Ron Santo, who was posthumously inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame on Sunday. Santo's No. 10 uniform number was carved into the outfield grass and his young grandson threw out the ceremonial first pitch, which was received by former Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood. ... Cubs RHP Matt Garza won't pitch again before Tuesday's trade deadline after an MRI revealed a slight fluid buildup in his right triceps area. ... Cardinals 3B David Freese was held out of the starting lineup after leaving Thursday's win over the Dodgers because of a cramp in his right calf. Matheny said Freese was available for pinch hitting. ... Wood walked Lynn in the fourth. The Cubs have walked pitchers a big league-high 16 times this season. ... St. Louis' five homers tied a season high.

Simple Ideas That Have Big Impacts For Home Businesses | Internet ...

While home businesses are worthwhile, there is still fear associated with starting one. How should you begin? What is the way to success? There are many things to consider when starting a home business, making the journey somewhat intimidating at its outset. This article will give you some home business advice and guidance.

If you search online, you will discover a variety of forums for the home business owner. Check out and research internet communities such as forums or message boards, and include both ones dedicated to your particular niche or outside your area of expertise. Good advice about running home based businesses sometimes comes from unexpected places, especially even businesses that are not in your niche.

A critical part of starting any home business is proper financial planning. Write down your projected income for your new business. This projections would predict many of the financial statistics of your business. These guesses include your future sales and expenses. By making these projections, you will have a starting place for planning your business?s future.

As the owner and operator of your own home business, you should always save your receipts from business-related purchases. Anything that you spend for your home business is tax deductible. Receipts are crucial if you intend to take business expense deductions. There are many resources that explain legitimate business deductions. Your accountant will be a major resource in understanding the business expense tax deductions you can take. Failing to keep receipts can cause trouble during tax time.

As an extra layer of protection for your essential business documents, back them up on inexpensive removable storage. The result would be losses in the thousands and having great difficulty when it comes to accurately filing taxes. Consider using an online backup program such as Mozy.

Make sure you keep communication lines open when dealing with home business clients. Show off new options, discounts, or site content for your products through your email newsletters. Don?t overload them, however, with too many email updates and communications.

Always deduct client meetings from your taxes when they involve expenditures such as lunch or other forms of entertaining. The costs of these meetings are legitimate, tax-deductible business expenses. Be careful not to deduct your normal dining expenses, though; only eating out with potential or actual clients are deductible.

Know your prices. If you are crafting your own products to sell, know the cost involved in the materials. A rule-of-thumb standard says that to price a product, it should be set at twice what the merchandise costs to produce. This is what you should charge for wholesale. Multiply the price you paid times three for the suggested retail price.

Establish a schedule of work and of personal time and learn how to stick to it. You should select an ending time, and make sure that you cease receiving calls at that time. Be sure to schedule personal time, as well as time to socialize with your friends and family.

Ask other companies to advertise your business and do the same for them. Not only will this boost your traffic, but it will positively impact your search engine rankings. Advertise your business prominently and display links to your own and others? sites so that readers clearly understand where the links will take them.

If you can, try and increase your income by establishing membership fees. For some websites, subscription fees or memberships can be a great way to increase the bottom line.

As you deliberate about what your home-based business will offer, try to select a product or service that you personally find appealing or useful. Customers want to buy products that solve common problems they face every day. If your product can solve a particular problem, it will most likely sell very well.

As was mentioned earlier in this article, a home business can be both appealing and intimidating. Hopefully you have gleaned some good information and advice from the tips shared in this article. Put that advice into action, and watch as things begin to work more smoothly for your home business.

How email archiving can help with a business' security - Channel MSP

Article By Sonian

It seems there's a new leaked email from some corporation or government agency every day, and some businesses have been slow to adapt to the changing environment. The reason for the delay may be that they are stuck between two competing demands. On the one hand, a business is worried about security, but on the other they are being forced to retain email communications for compliance reasons.

The main problem behind a cloud adaptation is that data starts to come from multiple sources. When employees use personal email to reply to clients from their smartphones, certain threads may include third parties by accident. Additionally, people bringing build your own device (BYOD) applications can open up a company to less secure providers.

One solution is to force your corporate email on all employees, centralizing the information on a single server, and then utilize email archiving to make sure the information is in a single, searchable place.

Cloud security on the rise

CIOs and IT departments are infamous for their skepticism of the cloud. Even in late 2011, a survey by Symantec found that security was the leading cause for cloud hesitancy among potential users.

The negative stigma has the potential to stick with cloud archiving for a long time, even though a study by Gartner found that the cloud has the potential to be more secure than traditional methods.

Larger corporations are beginning to see that security comes from a strong, centralized, cross-departmental policy. IBM, for example, created a standard that forced all employees to use a single cloud provider, eliminated sending and receiving email from private accounts, minimized the amount of BYOD applications and disallowed the use of Siri by users with iPhones. While the list goes into more detail, the main point is that a corporation should see its policies as a main threat to its security rather than the cloud as a whole.

Cloud archiving can centralize the location of information and allow C-level executives to institute a system where users are only using the official business email solution. With a perpetual archiving program, the information employees create will be saved, archived and backed up without stress on your current servers and data network.

1,000 STEPS

AP's Stephen Wade reports from the Olympic venues:

Arrive early. Be patient. Wear comfortable shoes.

That's my advice for anyone coming to the ExCel arena to watch one of seven events ? table tennis, weightlifting, judo, taekwondo, boxing, wrestling and fencing. The venue's cavernous. I counted taking about 1,000 steps walking from one end to the other. About right. The main "boulevard" runs past dozens of exhibitions halls. Must be 600-700 meters long (2,000 feet).

I mean, it dwarfs the venues in Beijing. That's saying something.

Troopers may face charges in 'Death Race' escort

By Brian Thompson, NBCNewYork.com

Two New Jersey State Police officers who escorted a high-speed caravan of luxury cars, including one driven by former New York Giants star Brandon Jacobs, to Atlantic City will likely be charged criminally Friday, according to a source familiar with the investigation.

Sgt. 1st Class Nassir Nassry, a 25-year-veteran of the State Police, and trooper Joseph Ventrella, 28, were suspended in April without pay after the incident in March. Nassry allegedly ordered Ventrella to help with the caravan.

The escort down the Garden State Parkway at speeds believed at times to be in excess of 100 mph made national headlines after one motorist who was passed by the Lamborghinis, Porches and other expensive, exotic cars described it as "Death Race 2012."

See the original report at NBCNewYork.com

No one was hurt, and there were no accidents as the convoy drove from north Jersey to Atlantic City.

Video of the incident by a construction worker appeared to show that some of the vehicles had tape over their license plates, which apparently prompted the Attorney General's office to consider filing criminal charges in the case, the source familiar with the investigation said.

Nassry filed his retirement papers Thursday morning, just hours before his attorney, Charles Sciarra, was to hold a news conference in which he was expected to sharply criticize the Attorney General's office for pursuing the criminal charges, NBC 4 New York has learned.

Stay informed with the latest headlines; sign up for our newsletter

The incident could prove costly for Sgt. Nassry, who otherwise has an unblemished record with the State Police.

One estimate suggested if he loses his pension, either through conviction or plea bargaining, it would amount to a $3 million fine, the maximum the 47-year-old veteran could otherwise expect to collect over his lifetime.

NJ Attorney General Jeff Chiesa is expected to announce a new policy for car escorts Friday, as well as internal disciplinary action against several other troopers who were involved in a similar caravan in 2010 that was caught on video and posted on YouTube.

This YouTube video shows a Lamborghini waiting at a stop light in Chicago before the driver misses the turn and ends up sandwiched between two other cars. TODAY.com's Dara Brown reports.

Don?t roll your eyes, but I want to share with all of you a way that Facebook and Twitter can actually enhance your lives. I know, I know?they might seem silly to you, but just bear with me!

You see, if we all agree that we should be on a constant search for wisdom in our lives (and I think we do), then doesn?t it only make sense that we should listen to those from whom we can gain wisdom?

The first place to start, of course, is your immediate circle of friends and family. If you want a successful, incredibly fulfilling marriage, then you should definitely start by seeking wisdom and counsel from someone you know who has achieved that. If you want to be financially secure, then you should start by seeking out those you know who have been successful financially. The list goes on?

But another common source for wisdom is the things we read, watch, and give our attention?books, speakers, pastors, audio recordings, videos, etc.

There are probably several authors, speakers, and other personalities whose material you just absorb constantly. I know I?m that way with tons of people?Dave Ramsey, Ken Davis, Patsy Clairmont, and Dan Miller just to name a few. I could listen to these people all day. In fact, I?d love to be able to just sit down and listen to them, maybe even ask a question or two.

I?m sure you have authors, speakers, and others whom you feel this way about.

Well, guess what? Most of the people you love and admire are already on Facebook and Twitter, and most of them are there for one reason?to keep an open conversation with their followers going.

The reality is that Facebook and Twitter are not just some silly trend for kids. In fact, I?ve read some of the most amazing stories I?ve ever heard by simply reading the comments people have left on my Facebook page. I continue to see amazing observations made by people I admire on Twitter on a daily basis.

To put it simply, if you follow the right people, Facebook and Twitter can become a huge source of wisdom in your life.

So here?s what I want you to do. Make a list of the people from whom you seek wisdom. Then, see how many of them you can find on Facebook and Twitter. Don?t worry! It?s not complicated. If you found your way to this blog post, you can find your way to their pages. The easiest way is to just type their name into Google and then add ?Twitter? or ?Facebook? to the end.

Now, spend a week or so just keeping up with what they post?I?m sure somewhere along the way you will find something of great value.

Oh, and if you need a little nudge in the right direction, here are just a few of MY favorite people to follow on Facebook and Twitter:

Dave Ramsey: Facebook / Twitter

Michael Hyatt: Facebook / Twitter

Patsy Clairmont: Facebook / Twitter

Marilyn Meberg: Twitter

Robert D. Smith: Twitter

For those of you out there who are already on Facebook and Twitter, don?t forget that I?m out there too! Look me up...I will be your friend!

Exclusive! Novelicious Chats To... Jane Green (Part One ...

AmandabwBy Amanda Keats

Jane Green says she is 'having a really lovely time' when I talk to her about her new book The Patchwork Marriage and how her UK book tour is going. The bestselling author was over here recently to promote the book, catch up with old friends and generally reacquaint herself with Jane-greenher native England. The author, who now lives in the US with her husband, children and numerous pets ? which include two cats, chickens and now two dogs ? was one of the pioneering authors for the chick-lit genre back in the 1990s with books like Straight Talking and Jemima J.

In her latest offering, Green writes about a woman, Andi, who finally marries her dream man but struggles to cope when one of his two daughters from a previous marriage is nothing but difficult and hostile towards her and tries very hard to break up their marriage.

"I did a lot of reading and anonymous lurking on various step-parenting forums. There was one particular dynamic that I found fascinating and I kept coming across it. It was the woman who marries the man with children and the children don't like her. She thinks, 'I'm a good person, and all these children need is enough love and kindness and they will love me. I will make them love me and we will create, I will create, this happy family.'" - Jane Green on the research for The Patchwork Marriage.

?The new book The Patchwork Marriage is about a woman who marries a man who already has children. You have a bit of a patchwork family yourself ? is that why you wanted to write about this subject?

?JG: Yes. I got a bit stuck after I finished The Love Verb, because I think it was so emotionally draining for me. I had every writer's worst nightmare in that I just ran out of stories and had no idea what to write next. My editor took me out for lunch and said: 'Well, what's going on in your life? What are the themes? What are you interested in? What are you thinking about?'

Of course, I'd just got married for the second time and found myself with a blended family and in a bid to try to understand what that meant and figure it all out ? because it definitely presents unique challenges ? I did a lot of reading and anonymous lurking on various step-parenting forums. There was one particular dynamic that I found fascinating and I kept coming across it. It was the woman who marries the man with children and the children don't like her. She thinks, 'I'm a good person, and all these children need is enough love and kindness and they will love me. I will make them love me and we will create, I will create, this happy family.'

Of course that seemed to be so rarely the case.

That became the foundation for this story.

?

Why did you decide to show both Andi and eldest step-daughter Emily's perspective in the book, instead of just sticking to one of them?

?JG: The beginning of the book is all Andi's point of view but after a while, she just comes across as being completely self-absorbed. As soon as I started writing as Emily ? who I really didn't like ? I understood her and I understood that this wasn't personal. She didn't hate her stepmother ? in some ways she wanted to love her ? but she couldn't because she felt she would be betraying her mother. She was a child in pain and she didn't know how to express that pain. I really empathised with her.

It threw a completely different light on where the book went after I started writing in her voice.

?

So at the beginning, was it just meant to be Andi's perspective?

?JG: Yes! I had no intention of writing as Emily and in fact it was my editor's suggestion and I'm so glad she did. I was very nervous when she suggested it, I didn't think I could do it. As soon as I started, though, it made perfect sense and I just felt like I understood what this girl was about.

They're both flawed. There isn't an obvious heroine here. As I get older, I'm far more interested in writing about people who are flawed because we are all human and we're all doing the best we can. It just isn't realistic to write about people who are leading perfect lives.

??

There were moments when I read the book that I wanted to scream at the characters ? particularly Ethan ? to stop being so stupid. Did you consider that kind of reaction when you were creating the characters?

JG: I don't think I found him quite as frustrating as clearly people do but I think that's why marriages come apart. During my research, I found that so many second marriages come apart and so many people I spoke to put the reason down to step-children and to the husbands not standing up for their wives. I think that frustration that you felt reading it was probably an accurate reflection of how these women felt about their husbands.

?"I could argue till the cows come home that it's a pejorative and the problem is in the definition but people have been arguing that since 1996 and honestly ? you're not going to change how people think of the term, or what people assume the definition of 'literature for chicks' means, so why bother?" - Jane Green on the term 'Chick Lit'.

?

Since Straight Talking in 1997 you are viewed as one of the first chick-lit writers. How do you think this genre has evolved?

JG: I think it's still going strong. People have been waiting for it to disappear since 1996! I don't think it applies to me any more. No one can really call me a 'chick' now.

It's still exactly what it always was ? which is a very real, honest and quite funny reflection of real women's lives. It is a younger woman's domain, always has been. It started off for women in their late-twenties and I think that's where it still is.

Now, I'm in my forties. I'm not writing about romances and there are no designer handbags or high heels or looking for Mr Right ? which is fine! Good luck to those who are writing it. I'm writing about middle-age, teenage children, blended families, parenting your parents and losing Jemima jfriends ? all the things that life throws at you. I just consider myself a writer of Women's Fiction.

I could argue till the cows come home that it's a pejorative and the problem is in the definition but people have been arguing that since 1996 and honestly ? you're not going to change how people think of the term, or what people assume the definition of 'literature for chicks' means, so why bother?

They're wonderful [books] and I feel really proud and honoured to be part of a movement that was so incredibly popular.

??

You talked about Jemima J's future at this year's International Chick Lit Month - a lot of people got very excited! Is there a Jemima sequel in the works?

JG: I'm not quite ready for the sequel yet. I have been thinking a lot about Jemima and what's happened to her. I'm pretty certain she's definitely not with Ben at the moment and I'm not sure what happened with her and Ben but I know she is a single mother. I also know that she's gone back to writing. She didn't do anything for a while. Ben had tremendous success and she was his sort of trophy partner. Jemima, I think, is about to start writing a series of YA books so as Jemima's alter-ego, that is one of my next projects. I am looking to write a series of YA novels as Jemima ? which I'm really excited about. In fact, that was inspired by writing as Emily [in The Patchwork Marriage] because I just so loved writing as this seventeen year old, and as a seventeen year old who doesn't quite fit in ? which also was very much Jemima's story and of course very much my story. I really related to that feeling of not feeling quite good enough.

"Jemima has a sweetness that I'm not sure I've ever quite managed to replicate." - Jane Green on her favourite character, Jemima J.

So do you have ideas in mind already of what these books will be about?

?JG: Just a broad idea ? they will be set in America. Of course that's where I live, that is my frame of reference now. There will be a group of slightly creative misfits and I'm just looking to unpack their worlds.

?

So is Jemima J your favourite character from all your books?

?JG: Oh yes. Jemima has a sweetness that I'm not sure I've ever quite managed to replicate.

?

So, is she the only character where you consider what they're doing now?

?JG: Well, yes. She's just loved! Even if I wanted to forget her, I couldn't. Everywhere I go, people ask me about Jemima. I also think it's the Cinderella story, the transformation. People love that transformative fairytale. I do think it would be lovely to revisit her and find out where her life has gone.

??

Who's your favourite leading man in your books?

JG: I did always love Ben in Jemima J. [Stops to consider]. Well, he's not a leading man but I loved Si in Book Ends. He was the best friend. I loved him. [Goes through back-catalogue considering all the men she's written ? mutters 'no, no' as she recalls each one]. I think my women are much stronger than the men actually. I don't think I've written fantastic men. I think I probably need to put a bit more work into the men. Wow! That's an eye-opener!

?
