Israel kills Hamas gunman, Gaza salvo hits Israeli city

GAZA (Reuters) - Israel killed a Hamas gunman it accused of preparing to fire a rocket from the Gaza Strip on Sunday and a separate Palestinian salvo struck a southern Israeli city, causing no damage.

The incidents followed a three-day lull since an upsurge in violence last week in which Israel killed at least four Gaza militants as dozens of rockets were fired at Israeli towns, damaging some homes and wounding several agricultural workers.

An Israeli air strike before dawn on Sunday struck two gunmen from the Palestinian enclave's governing Hamas movement as they rode a motorcycle near the central town of Khan Younis, local officials said. One man was killed and the other wounded.

An Israeli military spokesman said the air force had targeted a squad preparing to fire a rocket into Israel.

Hamas said its gunmen had fired mortar rounds at Israeli ground forces who had penetrated the coastal territory nearby. The military said those soldiers, who were unhurt, had been carrying out "routine work along the boundary fence".

Separately, two Palestinian rockets fired from Gaza struck Beersheba, a city 40 km (25 miles) away, causing no damage, the military spokesman said. Beersheba sounded air raid sirens and shuttered its schools as a precaution against further attacks.

The Popular Resistance Committees (PRC), one of several smaller Palestinian factions in Gaza that often operate independently of Hamas, said it had launched one of the Beersheba rockets. There was no immediate claim for the second.

Though Islamist Hamas is hostile to the Jewish state, it has recently sought to avoid cross-border confrontations as it tries to shore up its rule of Gaza in the face of more radical challengers and to build relations with potential allies abroad.

Israel's policy is to hold Hamas responsible for any attack emanating from Gaza.

Assessing Brand Creative: It's Rational | Business 2 Community

Listen up Marketing Vice-Presidents, Professionals, Brand Managers, Ambassadors and Gurus? I know only too well that it?s hard to separate yourself from the Brand you?re responsible for. After all, you work it, live it, breath it ? 24/7. You understand it intimately, better than anyone else. You define its market and potential, watch its competitors (with disdain!), develop the strategy that will give it wings, provide its raison d??tre (USP). Then ? fight for the budget by promising the powers that be that just around the corner, there?s profit to be had (ROI)? if only they would believe, like you believe.

When you?ve done all all that and successfully received the sought after funds, you need to entrust it to an ?outsider? (yes, an advertising agency!) to communicate to the world what you know is this Brand?s promise and truth? The ?how? and the ?why? of it.

So off goes the agency?s team, armed with your Communications Brief, Brand Guidelines, Brand?s positioning statement, market assessment and competitor?s information. They come back with creative that responds to brief, the market conditions and provides a good solid plan on how to obtain the objective that is required for that ever elusive ROI.

That?s when it begins, the shift from professional objectivity to personal judgement. That?s when business and marketing professionals change hats and become emotional human beings. The tweaks, the design directives, the micro management of font selection, type treatment, the scrutiny, the judgement calls, all about the creative. I am not suggesting for one minute that all agency work is on target, on point or on brief. Although, I am not quite sure how it can?t be if the brief provided was correct. The development and creation of Marketing Creative and ideation is very rational. Rationality doesn?t take away from creativity. Quite the contrary, it adds to it. Marketing creative is about thinking inside the box? the box that was created by the Brand Keeper.

Assessing Brand Creative properly is as important as writing a solid Marketing Plan. It?s important to learn how to assess creative effectively and efficiently. Here are 9 questions to ask yourself when assessing Brand Creative.

  1. Are you walking in your targets? shoes? Remember, you aren?t the target market, even if you fit the demographic profile. You are a Marketer, and more specifically the Marketer of this product!
  2. Is the product benefit easily communicated? Is the communication efficient. Does the creative speak succinctly and effortlessly about the end benefit.
  3. Does the creative deliver? Does it offer consumers the reasons to believe so that they can take the next step in the customer journey.
  4. Does the creative adhere to Brand Guidelines? A good brand agency lives by guidelines. Any agency that doesn?t isn?t a brand agency.
  5. Is the creative in line with the Brand Persona and the Brand Voice? This is the most subtle and intuitive part of any creative. Refer back to your communications brief for guidance.
  6. Is the creative original and Brand Unique? Does it provide a strong identification with the Brand? and only this Brand.
  7. Is it provocative? No, I don?t mean showing bare skin, I mean does it resonate and engage the audience? It must provide traction to gain brand awareness.
  8. Is it respectful to the Brand and its audience? Does it speak to consumers and not at them, does it value the consumer?s time and mind?
  9. Does it work as a unit? It?s very easy to zero in on a word, colour, or small detail. The more you focus on it, the bigger it becomes and the more you feel compelled to fix it. But don?t try to fix it yourself. Articulate what is bothering you and let the agency resolve the issue. Creative is a process, so there is always room for improvement. Make that improvement effortless by communicating the issue, rather than trying to provide the solution.

I recognize that it?s not easy to let go. Often the creative of marketing is the ?fun part?. Good agencies make it appear easy, but it?s not. In closing I will only say and I know it?s hard to hear but it doesn?t matter that you, the Brand Keeper, like purple or green, or that you prefer a serif type face or the use of a particular word. In short, it?s not about you. It?s about the Brand that you have been entrusted with. and have in turn, entrusted to brand agencyto ensure its healthy growth by developing a strong brand awareness and position within the market.

Pandora falls on report that Apple in talks for Internet radio

(Reuters) - Shares of online streaming music service Pandora Media closed down 12 percent on a report that Apple Inc was in serious talks with major music labels to start an advertising-supported internet radio service by early next year.

A deal could be reached by mid-November with Apple starting a service within the first three months of 2013, Bloomberg said, quoting people with knowledge of the negotiations.

News last month that Apple could be considering a potential launch of an online streaming music service cast a shadow over Pandora's business prospects. The company's shares have dropped more than 40 percent since then.

Pandora faces fierce competition from the likes of Sirius XM Radio, Clear Channel and Spotify as they battle for listeners in the burgeoning online streaming radio market, but Apple -- with its huge purse and ties to music labels -- may be Pandora's most serious challenger yet.

Executives from Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group, Warner Music Group Corp, and Sony Corp's music division visited Apple's headquarters recently to learn more about its radio plans, Bloomberg said.

Apple wants listeners to be able to buy tracks as music streams or revisit what they've heard in auto-generated playlists, it reported.

"We don't comment on our stock price or rumored competitive moves," Eric Brown, Pandora's vice-president of communications wrote in an email.

"We remain focused on our listeners and delivering the best Internet radio experience for them," he added.

Apple was not immediately available for comment.

Shares of Pandora closed at $8.20 on the New York Stock Exchange on Thursday. They were down 13 percent at $8.08 in trading after the bell.

Stars Line Up for Inaugural Pro Surf Contest | gsport4girls

Bianca Buitendag among 80 girls competing in the first-ever Surfing South Africa Women?s Pro, which take place simultaneously in Cape Town, Jeffreys Bay and Durban on Sunday.

Cape Town, Jeffreys Bay and Durban will host the inaugural Women?s Pro surf contests on Sunday and over 80 girls will compete at the three simultaneous events. Each venue has attracted the cream of South Africa?s female surfers adding enormous prestige to the Surfing South Africa Pro Surf Tour (PST) events.

Bianca Buitendag, who achieved tremendous success on the international stage this year, qualifying amongst the World?s top 17 ranked women for the 2013 World Tour, will be competing in the Open and Under 20 divisions in Jeffreys Bay on Sunday. Organisers are delighted that the 19 year-old from George continues to support local events even though she spent the majority of the year campaigning overseas.

Although she is now one of the world?s elite competitors, locals will be keen to take Buitendag on and her toughest opposition in the Open division is likely to come from 2012 SA Junior team member and Jeffreys Bay local Emma Smith.

In the Under 20 group, Emma and her sister Gina, the recently crowned SA Under 17 champion, plus talented Inge McClaren of East London and 2011 SA Under 15 champion Tahra Uren of Jeffreys Bay will be keen to upset the international star.

Recently crowned South African Under 15 champion Crystal Hulett of Cape St Francis, Uren, McClaren, twins Michelle and Kayla Ann Verrynne of George and Britney Linder of PE are the ones to watch in the U16 division at Jeffreys Bay.

The Open Division of the Cape Town edition of the Women?s Pro features a host of talented surfers. Tanika Hoffman of Clifton, who recently returned from competing in Europe, SA Masters champion Tasha Mentasti of Tamboers Kloof, former SA team members Tarryn Chudleigh of Kommetjie and Chantelle Rautenbach of Melkbosstrand and SA Women?s Day champion Danielle Johnson of Muizenberg look the pick of the group, while Holly Armstrong of Scarborough is another accomplished competitor.

Hoffman, Johnson and Armstrong also head up the U20 division where Anoush Zakarian of Melkbosstrand and Nina Woermann of Kenilworth are the up and coming surfers in this group. In the Under 16 division Zakarian and Woermann will be up against talented Ruth Armstrong of Scarborough, Amy Bosworth of Kommetjie, Caitlin October of Noordhoek and half a dozen other young girls keen to make their mark.

The South-Easterly winds predicted for Sunday make Long Beach in Kommetjie the most likely venue for the Cape Town event.

Bay of Plenty will host the Durban Women?s Pro where another recently-returned international surfer will be competing. Sarah Baum of Athlone Park, who started 2012 in style with a runner-up finish in the ISA China Cup and was captain of the SA Junior Team at the ISA World Championships, heads up the Open division.

Baum?s toughest competition is bound to come from experienced campaigner and two-time World Masters Champion Heather Clark of Port Shepstone along with current Under 20 SA Champion Heidi Palmboom of the Bluff, 2012 SA Junior team member Nicole Pallet, former SA Junior team member Nikita Kekana and current PST rankings leader Zoe Papadakis, all three of whom are from Durban.

In the Under 20 Division Baum, Palmboom, Kekana and Pallet will face a talented group of rising stars headed by Chanelle Botha of Warner Beach, Teal Hogg, Jade Story and Cana Foster (all Durban) while the Under 16 division is headed up by Botha, Hogg, Story, Foster and fellow Durbanite Sophie Bell.

There will be a final for ?Rookies? in all three regions and all three venues feature 1A rated PST events for Open Women, U20?s and U16?s. There is R2 500 in prize-money at stake in each division at each event while the Rookies, who have not previously represented their respective Provinces or competed in a national event before, will win prizes.

The heats and provisional schedules for all three events are available on the Surfing SA website.

Surfers competing in the Cape Women?s Pro should meet at Long Beach in Kommetjie, the Durban group are required to meet at the Bay of Plenty and the surfers competing in J-Bay must meet at the Albatross car Park. The meeting time is 8am for an 8.30am start.

The Women?s Pro events are supported by Sport & Recreation SA. Surfing South Africa is the governing body for the sport and is a member of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) and the International Surfing Association (ISA).

Crackdowns and Coincidences - Tension High As East Africa Confronts Muslim Groups

A spiritual leader disappears in Zanzibar. Riots shut down central Dar es Salaam. In Mombasa, a would-be rebel is badly beaten by police. All over East Africa, tensions between governments and a number of Muslim groups are running at an all-time high, and no one is in the mood for compromise. SIMON ALLISON wonders if the latest crackdowns will have the opposite of the intended effect.

As each day passes, the mystery around the disappearance of Sheikh Farid Hadi grows deeper. The Zanzibari cleric went missing on Tuesday last week, and even though he reappeared on Friday, no one?s quite sure where he was or what happened to him in the intervening four days.

His supporters have one story. They claim that the cleric, the spiritual leader of Zanzibar?s Uamsho (?awakening?) movement was kidnapped by police in apparent retaliation for Uamsho?s demand that Zanzibar be given full autonomy from mainland Tanzania. Venting their frustration with this perceived persecution, the cleric?s supporters caused havoc on the island last week: blocking roads with chopped-down trees, burning tyres, throwing stones at police. Police responded in kind, with batons and tear gas. The unrest forced shops in Zanzibar?s capital Stone Town to close, and one policeman was killed ? stabbed multiple times and left to die in a drainage ditch.

When he emerged on Friday, Sheikh Farid supported this version of events. ?Four men who had their faces covered seized me on Tuesday. They were interested in getting information on our activities, my trips to Oman and Saudi Arabia.? They inquired about messages I received in my mobile phone and as we speak they have not returned my handsets,? Sheikh Farid told reporters, adding that the men had introduced themselves as security officers. ?At one time they shot on the floor to scare me into telling them what they wanted to hear.?

Tanzania?s security services vehemently deny this, saying they had absolutely no idea where Sheikh Farid spent those four days ? they couldn?t find him either, apparently, although not everyone bought this denial. ?Zanzibar is literally a village where everybody knows everyone else; it beats the wits out of everyone that one Sheikh Farid Hadi Ahmed? could disappear into oblivion just like that. The Zanzibar police owe the public some explaining,? wrote the Tanzanian Guardian.

(AP) ? Hurricane Sandy's howling winds and pelting rains lashed precarious shantytowns, stranded travelers and downed power lines Wednesday as it roared across Jamaica on a course that would take it on to Cuba and then possibly threaten Florida and the Bahamas.

Sandy's death toll was at least two. An elderly man was killed in Jamaica when he was crushed by a boulder that rolled onto his clapboard house, police reported. Earlier Wednesday, a woman in Haiti was swept away by a rushing river she was trying to cross.

In some southern towns on Jamaica, a few crocodiles were caught in rushing floodwaters that carried them out of their homes in mangrove thickets, showing up in residential districts where electricity was knocked out, Jamaica's environmental agency said. One big croc took up temporary residence in a family's front yard in the city of Portmore.

By Wednesday evening the hurricane's eye had crossed Jamaica and emerged off its northern coast near the town of Port Antonio, meteorologists said, but rain and winds continued to pound the Caribbean island, which was dwarfed by the sprawling Sandy.

It was the first direct hit by the eye of a hurricane on Jamaica since Hurricane Gilbert 24 years ago, and fearful authorities closed the island's international airports and police ordered 48-hour curfews in major towns to keep people off the streets and deter looting. Cruise ships changed their itineraries to avoid the storm, which made landfall five miles (8 kilometers) east of the capital, Kingston.

Flash floods and mudslides were a threat for this debt-shackled tropical island of roughly 2.7 million inhabitants, which has a crumbling infrastructure and a number of sprawling shantytowns built on steep embankments and along gullies that sluice runoff water to the sea.

In the hilly community of Kintyre, on the outskirts of Kingston, Sharon Gayle and a few of her neighbors expected to completely lose the town's bridge over the Hope River, which washed away a section of the span just three weeks ago during a heavy downpour. The shell of a concrete home that collapsed into the river and killed two people several years ago still lies toppled on the sandy banks.

"We've gotten cut off here a whole heap of times. But with a big nasty hurricane on the way, I'm really nervous. We're trying not to show it in front of the children though," the mother of three said, huddling under a sopping white towel as she stared at the rising river.

The 18th named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season was expected to pass over eastern Cuba early Thursday, missing the U.S. naval base at Guantanamo Bay, where pretrial hearings were being held for a suspect in the deadly 2000 attack on the destroyer USS Cole off Yemen.

Cuban authorities issued a hurricane watch for several provinces. A hurricane watch was issued for the central and northwestern Bahamas, where the storm was predicted to pass Thursday and Friday morning.

Forecasters at the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said tropical storm conditions were possible along the southeastern Florida coast, the Upper Keys and Florida Bay by Friday morning. A tropical storm watch was in effect for the area, the center said.

In southwestern Haiti, a woman died in the town of Camp Perrin after she was swept away by a river she was trying to cross, said Marie Alta Jean-Baptiste, head of the country's civil protection office. There were reports of extensive damage to Port Salut on Haiti's far-southwestern coast after a river burst its banks. Mayor Larock Pierre Clervert said a hotel was destroyed by flood waters.

Across Jamaica, the poor in slums and moneyed residents in gated communities hunkered down at home as powerful winds shrieked around buildings and sent sheets of rain sideways.

Stranded business travelers and a smattering of locals rode out the Category 1 hurricane in hotels clustered along a strip in Kingston's financial district. Some read prayer books or novels, while others watched movies or communicated with loved ones on computers.

Cris Hopkinson, a Toronto woman who was on a business trip, said she hoped to catch a flight off the island Friday once the stormy weather cleared.

"For now, I'm just hoping that the glass in the windows doesn't shatter from the winds," Hopkinson said in the dining room of the Courtleigh Hotel.

About a mile away in the rough neighborhood of Grants Pen, where shops have been ransacked in the past during storms, a number of young men ignored the curfew, riding on bicycles or walking in small groups in the steady rain.

Cecile Graham, a mother of two teenagers, said she was worried about the possibility of burglaries or looting at the small markets and shops that line the main road.

"I hope that all the police are out and we won't have the looting that has taken place before," she said.

Police slowly drove through drenched communities in the coastal capital with their cruisers' lights flashing. A senior police superintendent was shot in troubled West Kingston, but the circumstances were murky.

The storm was predicted to drop as much as 12 inches (25 centimeters) of rain, especially over central and eastern parts of Jamaica, the country's meteorological service said. Some isolated spots could see as much as 20 inches (50 centimeters), according to U.S. forecasters. Sea water washed over the streets of Port Royal, a depressed fishing village at the tip of a spit of land near Kingston's airport.

More than 100 fishermen were stranded in outlying Pedro Cays, a lobster- and conch-rich area about 40 miles (66 kilometers) off Jamaica's southern coast that was the first area of Jamaica to get Sandy's winds and rain. Some of them told local media they lacked fuel to get back to the mainland, but authorities said they willfully disobeyed an evacuation order.

On the mainland, over 1,000 people moved to shelters, but others living in low-lying areas on the mainland refused to evacuate their homes because they were fearful that their possessions would be stolen.

Airports in Kingston and Montego Bay shut down for the day and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. announced that its Allure of the Seas megaship would not stop at Jamaica's northern Falmouth terminal on Wednesday, remaining at sea instead. Other cruise lines also rerouted ships from port calls to Montego Bay and Ocho Rios.

While Jamaica was ravaged by bands from Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and other powerful hurricanes centered offshore, the eye of a hurricane hasn't carved across the island since Gilbert in 1988, Jamaican meteorologist Jacqueline Spence said.

Late Wednesday afternoon, Sandy was a Category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 80 mph (130 kph). It was moving north at about 14 mph (22 kph). Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 30 miles (45 kilometers) from the center.

Far out in the Atlantic, Tropical Storm Tony posed no threat to land. The storm had maximum sustained winds of about 50 mph (85 kph) and was moving east-northeast at 25 mph (41 kph). Its center was 1,060 miles (1,705 kilometers) west-southwest of the Azores.

Iraq: 9 killed in separate attacks in Baghdad

BAGHDAD (AP) ? A series of attacks struck Shiite neighborhoods in Baghdad early on Tuesday, killing nine people and wounding 26, according to Iraqi officials.

The attacks came as Iraqis prepare to celebrate the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha, which begins later this week.

Although violence has ebbed since the heights of the insurgency, Baghdad's Shiite areas remain favorite targets for Sunni extremists who seek to ignite nationwide sectarian conflict.

The deadliest attack happened when four parked cars packed with explosives detonated simultaneously in the northwestern neighborhood of Shula early on Tuesday, killing seven people and wounding 16, a police officer said.

The twisted and charred remains of vehicles, including what appeared to be a minibus, could be seen near a damaged house in a narrow residential street after the explosions.

Another police officer said two mortar rounds landed in the capital's northern Chikok district, killing two people and wounding 10.

Two health officials in nearby hospitals confirmed the casualty figures. All officials spoke on condition of anonymity as they were not authorized to release information.

While there was no claim of responsibility, coordinated bombings and related attacks are a favorite tactic of Sunni insurgents, including Iraq's local al-Qaida offshoot, known as the Islamic State of Iraq.

Tuesday's attacks occurred three days after back-to-back bomb blasts in a crowded Baghdad market near a revered Shiite shrine and a string of shootings targeting government officials left 17 people dead in what was Iraq's deadliest day this month.

Militants in the past have targeted civilians before and during public holidays, when many employees are off work and families gather in mosques, parks and restaurants to mark the occasion. Iraqi authorities typically beef up security measures during the holidays to try to thwart the attacks.

In August, a relentless wave of attacks rumbled across Iraq shortly before another Muslim holiday, the Eid al-Fitr that marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan, killing more than 90 people.

Also in Iraq on Tuesday, the Cabinet approved a draft budget for next year of 138 trillion dinars ($118.5 billion) ? an 18.5 percent increase over this year's budget. The budget must still be approved by parliament.

Russell Means, Indian activist and actor, dies at 72

Joshua Lott / Reuters file

American Indian activist Russell Means, seen here at his Scottsdale, Ariz., home in October 2011, helped lead protests for Native American rights.

By NBC News staff and news services

Russell Means, the American Indian activist who helped lead the 1973 uprising at Wounded Knee and who later became a Hollywood actor, has died. He was 72.

Means died Monday at his ranch in Porcupine, S.D., on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, Oglala Sioux Tribe spokeswoman Donna Salomon said. The firebrand former leader of the American Indian Movement and one-time Libertarian Party candidate for U.S. president had been battling advanced esophageal cancer.

Born on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation,?Means joined the American Indian Movement in 1968 and soon became one of the group's prominent leaders. He took part in an occupation of the U.S. Bureau of Indian Affairs headquarters in Washington in 1972, and helped lead the 71-day standoff with federal authorities at Wounded Knee on Pine Ridge in 1973.

He found himself dogged for decades by questions about AIM?s alleged involvement in the slaying of a tribe member and the several gun battles with federal officers during the occupation of Wounded Knee, but denied the group ever promoted violence.

"You people who want to continue to put AIM in this certain pocket of illegality, I can't stand you people," Means said, lashing out an at audience member question during an April gathering commemorating the uprising's 40th anniversary. "I wish I was a little bit healthier and a little bit younger, because I wouldn't just talk."

Means told The Associated Press in 2011 that before AIM, there had been no advocate on a national or international scale for American Indians, and that Native Americans were ashamed of their heritage.

Leaders of the American Indian Movement, from left, Dennis Banks, Russell Means and an unidentified third man appear at a press conference to list demands of the federal government for an increase in financial aid for the town of Wounded Knee, S.D., on March 16, 1973.

"No one except Hollywood stars and very rich Texans wore Indian jewelry," Means said. "And there was a plethora of dozens if not hundreds of athletic teams that in essence were insulting us, from grade schools to college. That's all changed."

The movement eventually faded away, the result of Native Americans becoming self-aware and self-determined, Means said.

Means had fought for Native American rights since the 1960s, when he first protested college and professional sports teams' use of Indian images as mascots, which he said were demeaning caricatures of his people.

Means was arrested numerous times during his long career of protest and spent several periods in jail.

He ran unsuccessfully for president of his tribe and sought the Libertarian nomination for U.S. president, losing to Congressman Ron Paul at the party's 1987 national convention.

Means? acting career began in 1992 when he portrayed Chingachgook alongside Daniel Day-Lewis' Hawkeye in "The Last of the Mohicans." He also appeared in the 1994 film "Natural Born Killers," voiced Chief Powhatan in the 1995 animated film "Pocahontas" and guest-starred in 2004 on the HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm."

Means kept busy with his Hollywood career even as he battled the cancer that finally took his life.?The Internet Movie Database reports that Means had recently completed projects, and had more in the works.

Means appeared in a film called "Tiger Eyes," which was based on a Judy Blume novel. Means' son, Tatanka Means, starred. The film screened Sunday at the Sante Fe Independent Film Festival.

The Means duo also are credited in "Winnetou: The Beginning," set for a 2013 release.

Means recounted his life in the book "Where White Men Fear to Tread." He said he pulled no punches in his autobiography, admitting to his frailties and evils but also acknowledging his successes.

"I tell the truth, and I expose myself as a weak, misguided, misdirected, dysfunctional human being I used to be," he said.

Salomon, the tribal spokeswoman, called Means' death a "great loss" for the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

Pregnant NYC woman slashed, stabbed to death

NEW YORK (AP) ? A pregnant mother of four killed in her New York City apartment the day before her wedding died from slash and stab wounds to her neck, authorities said Sunday.

The death Vindalee Smith, 38, was ruled a homicide, the city medical examiner's office said in releasing autopsy results. Her unborn child did not survive.

Smith was found on the floor of her home in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn on Saturday. Neighbors said she had moved into the area in recent weeks. Her other children are older and did not live with her.

Police said there was no sign of forced entry, and no weapon was recovered. Investigators were looking for a possible suspect and spoke to Smith's fiance as well as friends and family.

Smith had once feuded with a former neighbor who threatened to kill her, but it was months ago and the trouble had stopped when she moved to the new apartment, the Rev. Ferron Francis told the Daily News.

On Sunday, police tape blocked off the street to keep people away from the brownstone home.

Smith was a devout Seventh-day Adventist and attended New Dimension Church, about half a block from her residence.

The brutal, unexpected death "is tragic, it has broken our hearts," said Francis.

Smith had joined the church about three years ago, said Andrew Connor, a deacon at New Dimension.

"She was dedicated to her family," he said. "She was beautiful and this is very surreal."

Sales Managers ? These Tips are Just for You! | The Sales Pro Insider

Years ago I wrote a short eBook called 52 Timely Tips for Sales Managers full of quick and easy tips to equip, engage and energize your sales team. I wrote it because nearly every day I hear the moaning of sales managers across the globe wondering HOW they can ignite their team to meet goals and reduce the number of troubleshooting calls they receive.

The book has done well ? and now Steven Rosen has ?one upped? it with a timely and targeted eBook of his own!

Steven reports that:

Sales managers are the key to driving sales performance. Yet many sales managers are not well trained or coached on how to become a more effective manager. Sales executives are not investing sufficient funds in the right way to help their sales managers up their game. As a result sales suffer.

One of my colleagues has dedicated his business to coaching and mentoring sales executives and managers to up their game. His name is Steven Rosen and he is the author of 52 Sales Management Tips.

I got an early copy and found some truly helpful tips divided into categories (smart move Steven) ? and I know you will too.

As an example:

We all know self-doubters in our personal and professional lives. Despite they?re lack of apparent confidence, many of them are highly successful. From a cognitive perspective the self-doubter can only see what they don?t do well. They are their own worst critics. Given a lack of self-awareness they are extremely difficult to coach.

Can you think of anyone on your team who fits this tag?

Tip #42: The Self Doubter

The Self Doubter: A sales rep that sees and believes everything they do is wrong.

These reps are extremely challenging to coach. If you provide direct feedback it may be met with ?I already do that? or reasons why they don?t. The Self Doubter perceives any critiquing as weakness and personalizes it as confirmation that they are doing a horrible job!

The trick with this type of individual is to lead them through a process of self-discovery and improvement. By asking them a series of questions you can guide them through a process of self-awareness that will lead to an ?ah ha? moment. This breakthrough may seem labor-intensive, but the payback is a stronger rep and increased performance.

I suggest you visit the link to learn how these practical and easy-to-implement ideas will help your sales team succeed.

(AP) ? Searchers found the body of a young Oregon woman who vanished this week on her way to work and a neighbor has been arrested, Gresham police said late Friday night.

The body of Whitney Heichel, 21, was found on Larch Mountain, a remote, forested area east of Gresham, Police Chief Craig Junginger told a news conference.

After collecting DNA and fingerprints and conducting three interviews over three days, police arrested Jonathan Holt, 24, of Gresham, for investigation of aggravated murder, the chief said.

Holt lived in the same apartment complex as Heichel and her husband.

The Starbucks barista reportedly left her apartment for work at about 6:45 a.m. Tuesday on a drive that typically takes less than five minutes.

Her husband, Clint, called police roughly three hours later. He told investigators he tried to reach Whitney multiple times after her boss alerted him that she never arrived for her 7 a.m. shift.

Police said Heichel's ATM card was used at a nearby Troutdale gas station at 9:14 a.m. Tuesday. Two hours later, her sport utility vehicle was found in a Wal-Mart parking lot with the passenger side window smashed.

A child later found her cell phone in a field that lies between the gas station and the Wal-Mart, giving investigators another venue to search.

Police have been searching Larch Mountain since Wednesday, believing that Heichel's SUV was driven there.

Detectives interviewed Holt on Wednesday and Thursday before arresting him during a Friday night interview, the chief said.

There were "many inconsistencies" in Holt's interviews, Junginger said.

Additional crime lab evidence received Friday morning tied him to Heichel's vehicle, the chief added.

It was not immediately known if Holt was represented by a lawyer.

Jim Vaughn, a family spokesman, addressed the Friday night news conference, thanking police for their commitment in the case.

"Really, words can't begin to express the sadness that our families are experiencing tonight," Vaughn said.

"Whitney was a very loving person," he added. "She was warm, she was kind, she was everything you would want in a friend, relative, spiritual fellow worshipper."

He asked for privacy for the family, saying "our loss and heartache is too much to bear right now."

Police took no questions.

(AP) ? Theo Riddick is Notre Dame's smallest running back but Brigham Young learned he's got no shortage of power.

The 5-11, 200-pound Riddick ran for a career-high 143 yards against a Cougars defense that entered the game third in the nation against the rush. More importantly, Riddick sparked a ground game that ground out 270 yards, with his housemate, Cierre Wood, getting 114 yards and George Atkinson III scoring the go-ahead touchdown as the Irish rallied for a 17-14 win Saturday.

"As a team, this was special," Riddick said. "We showed that we can run the ball."

He got no argument from Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly.

Riddick "just ran really hard, north and south, physical," Kelly said. "That gives energy for everybody. The o-line sees a guy who's really pounding it in there. He got us that energy we needed."

Notre Dame (7-0), off to its best start in a decade, has a big game ahead against No. 10 Oklahoma next week, although it looked for a while the importance of that game was in jeopardy. The Cougars (4-4) fell to 0-3 on the road as they surrendered a season-high 270 yards rushing.

The Cougars drove to the Notre Dame 31 late, but Riley Nelson was sacked for a 9 yard loss. Moments earlier Cody Hoffman was wide open for what would have probably been a touchdown, but Nelson's pass wasn't close.

"We were one or two plays short from being able to come away with a victory," BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said.

Riddick had runs of 55 and 27, the two longest rushes of his career. Neither was easy. On the 55-yard run from the 37-yard line, he ran into a pile at the line of scrimmage, put his hand down to keep his balance and then broke out of the pack before being caught by cornerback Jordan Johnson at the 8-yard line.

"Just run and run until you can't no more," Riddick said. "And I got a little gassed at the end."

The Irish then ran three straight running plays for a gain of one yard and had to settle for a 24-yard field goal by Kyle Brindza to cut BYU's lead to 14-10 late in the third quarter. On his 27-yard run late in the second quarter, Riddick broke two tackles and carried three BYU defenders for the final 10 yards to the BYU 14. But the drive stalled and Brindza missed a 28-yard field goal wide right.

Riddick said it was exciting to see the Irish backs come up so big.

"We have some talent back there, so why not give us the ball?" he said.

BYU linebacker Brandon Ogletree said the Cougars didn't tackle well enough.

"There were way too many times where we had a dude down in the backfield, in a hole, and we let him spring one for 12, 20, 40 yards, so that's not acceptable," he said.

After going 17 quarters without giving up an offensive touchdown, Notre Dame gave up two in a span of 2:18 as Nelson threw a 6-yard scoring pass to a wide-open Cody Hoffman in the end zone and a 2-yard pass to Kaneakua Friel after an interception by Kyle Van Noy.

That put BYU up 14-7 at halftime. Defensive end Kapron Lewis-Moore said the Irish didn't let the two touchdowns affect their play.

"You've got to move on to the next play and make the necessary adjustments, and I think that's what we did. We played the second half pretty clean," he said.

Backup quarterback Tommy Rees, starting in place of injured Everett Golson, completed 6 of 7 passes in the first quarter for 86 yards and a touchdown, throwing four of those to Tyler Eifert, including the TD. But Rees missed his next seven passes and the Irish attempted only three passes in the second half.

Rees' only completion after the break was a 31-yard pass to TJ Jones with a little more than a minute left in the third quarter. Riddick ran the ball up the middle for 19 yards to the BYU 5 to set up Atkinson's 2-yard TD run.

Kelly said he was concerned the Irish weren't more excited about the victory in the locker room afterward.

"I didn't sense a great feeling after winning a tough, tough football game. And that's a team that won 10 games last year," he said.

Kelly said the Irish came out on top with a good running game and a strong defensive effort, which he said has to be their formula for success. He said he knew BYU would be dangerous.

"That's a bracket buster team in basketball parlance, that's a darned good football team," he said. "Our kids hung in there and won the football game. So really pleased to be 7-0."

Lexus Unveils Luscious Blue LF-LC Hybrid in Australia | Inhabitat ...

Lexus, Lexus LF-LC Concept, Lexus hybrid, Toyota, Toyota hybrid, hybrid car, hybrid sports car, green transportation, green car, Lexus Hybrid Drive,

Following its debut at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, Lexus has unveiled an updated version of its Lexus LF-LC hybrid concept. The biggest change to the design is the new Opal Blue exterior color ? according to Lexus, the new shade is inspired by the lustrous color found in semi-precious opal stones in the Australian Outback.

Lexus, Lexus LF-LC Concept, Lexus hybrid, Toyota, Toyota hybrid, hybrid car, hybrid sports car, green transportation, green car, Lexus Hybrid Drive,

When we first saw the LF-LC concept, Lexus confirmed that it was powered by a hybrid powertrain, but now Lexus has released more information about what powers the sexy hybrid concept. Named Advanced Lexus Hybrid Drive, the system features an Atkinson cycle engine which is mated to an advanced high-energy battery pack that is designed to deliver greater power from a smaller battery than those currently used in Lexus? range of hybrid vehicles. Combined, the LF-LC Blue concept?s hybrid powertrain packs 500 horsepower, which is more than any other Lexus hybrid. Lexus Australia?s Tony Cramb said that LF-LC Blue is a preview of what the future may hold for sports cars.

?For decades, Lexus has been synonymous with hybrid drivetrains, superior build quality, comfort and reliability,? Cramb said. ?With the LF-LC we now reinforce our design and technology credentials. The LF-LC is absolutely stunning. Its good looks mask some very exciting design and engineering innovations that will influence Lexus vehicles in the future. LF-LC is part concept, part reality: the concept hints at what?s to come from Lexus, while the reality has us actively studying how we can engineer and build a vehicle like this in the future.?

Markets steady in run-up to EU summit

LONDON (AP) ? Markets were largely steady Thursday, after solid gains this week, on signs that China's economy is not slowing as quickly as feared, the U.S. is recovering and Spain will soon request a bailout.

With European leaders gathering for their latest summit meeting in Brussels, investors have moved to the sidelines. Though expectations that the 27-nation EU will agree terms of a banking union have diminished over recent days, investors are keen to hear updates on the economic fate of Spain, as well as Greece, which appears to be near to securing its next batch of bailout cash.

"There seems to be some cheer coming through from the expectation that the EU summit may deliver some meaningful direction on continuing to resolve the euro crisis so against this backdrop perhaps the upbeat mood is to be expected," said Mike McCudden, head of derivatives at Interactive Investor.

In Europe, the FTSE 100 index of leading British shares was up 0.2 percent at 5,922, while Germany's DAX rose 0.4 to 7,424. The CAC-40 in France was flat at 3,527.

Wall Street was also poised for a flat opening, with both the Dow futures and the broader S&P 500 futures broadly unchanged.

How U.S. stocks perform could hinge on the next round of corporate earnings statements from the likes of Verizon. Technology giants Google and Microsoft are also due to report after the close.

"Earnings season has so far provided more 'beats' than we would have been expecting, though with few knockout numbers," said Will Hedden, sales trader at IG.

There was a similarly subdued feel elsewhere in the markets, with the euro broadly unchanged over the day at $1.3110 and the price of a barrel of benchmark New York crude down a single cent at $92.11 a barrel.

Earlier, China was in focus after figures showed the world's No. 2 economy grew by 7.4 percent in the third quarter from the same period the year before. Though lower than the previous quarter's 7.6 growth, the decline was much gentler than previous quarters. Upbeat retail sales figures also helped ease concerns over the slowdown.

"With many still pinning hopes of a global economic recovery being driven by China, this news is certainly welcome," said Fawad Razaqzada, markets strategist at GFT Markets.

In mainland China, the Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.2 percent to 2,131.69, the highest close in more than a month. The Shenzhen Composite Index gained 1.7 percent to 878.64.

Elsewhere in Asia, Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose sharply, by 2 percent to close at 8,982.86 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.5 percent to 21,518.71.
