The Secret World of Home Haunters | Vancouver Weekly

The America Scream - A Netflix Review

Halloween has always been one of my favourite holidays. As a child, my sister and I would join forces with the girl across the street, and the three of us, with our fathers in tow, would traverse the dark and chilled neighbourhood. Pumpkin smoke, dressing up, spooky noises, candy overloads, I loved it all. But the thing I loved the most was being terrified of the brown house halfway down the block. This house went to town adding black lights, cobwebs and to top it off, a figure that would haunt my nightmares for years to come: an enormous Frankenstein?s monster figurine that stood guard by the door. It?s ghastly groans were enough to stop me from climbing the stairs; all I could do was look in horror, deciding that the candy wasn?t worth it. Looking back, this house wasn?t anything like some of the haunted houses I?ve seen since, but it went above and beyond what was in my neighbourhood, and made an impact such that I can remember it now, over 20 years later. Evidently people like this are known as ?home haunters?, a term I recently picked up watching The American Scream. Directed by Michael Paul Stephenson, infamous for his lead role in the film Troll 2, The American Scream is a documentary that follows three families of home haunters as they prepare for Halloween in the suburb of Fairhaven, Massachusetts. All three groups have their own different family dynamics and ideas of what makes a scary Halloween display. Their bonds with family and community, and their passions for their craft make this film a very enjoyable experience.

We are first introduced to Victor Bariteau, a systems administrator whose favourite holiday is Halloween. He spends the entire year building new props for his haunted house and dreams of going pro. Although his family supports his ambitions, his oldest daughter is the only one who comes close to her father?s passion. Tina, Victor?s wife, pitches in to make costumes and help with preparations, but she seems exasperated with his hobby, which is slowly growing to consume all available space in their small home. Victor?s dedication to his work is notable, and he is always trying to outdo himself, building up his props each year. He looks to expand his knowledge by listening to Hauntcast (?radio for haunters and Halloween fanatics?) and going to Hauntcon, a convention for home haunters who are looking to up their game by attending panels and workshops lead by pros and purchasing new props on the trade floor. In this way, Victor stands in stark contrast to the other two families featured in the film. Unlike them, Victor seems to be gaining a lot more personally by growing his passion, rather than doing it mainly to bond with his family.

We are also introduced to Manny Souza, and Rick and Matthew Broeder, all of whom live in the neighbourhood. Manny is a family man whose Halloween attraction is an intricate collection of creepy found objects. His children love helping set up, and his wife is sure to get friends and family involved. Manny admits that family is everything to him, and he?ll keep doing the haunted house for as long as he can because it gives him more time to bond with his children. This is the same for Rick and Matt Broeder, a father and son duo who spend large amounts of time with each other. Matt admits that his father is his best friend, and the two bond together building props for their haunted house. Matt, an award-winning amateur clown who proudly displays his trophies and plaques, also find home haunting an excellent artistic outlet. What Rick and Matthew may lack in artistry they make up for in ridiculous banter that gave this film a comedic edge.

The American Scream is wonderfully constructed. We meet not just the haunters but their families too. The film relies on interviews with family members to open a window into personal histories and of course, everyone?s opinion about their haunted house. The film is very entertaining but at other times it?s sad. Neither Manny nor Rick is in very good health, though thankfully they both have their family to support them. Victor too seems to be so focused on his dreams that he ignores all else around him, losing himself in his craft and burning himself out. His family is very understanding, but the film portrays them as ignoring their own needs and desires.

Many people write off Halloween as a children?s holiday, but these home haunters believe that it?s a time to bring people together. I felt all warm and fuzzy watching this movie, something that?s perhaps unexpected for a film titled The American Scream. This is a documentary with heart that peers into its subject?s successes, failures, troubles and most importantly their connections with their family and the greater community.

In an effort to guide you towards savvy purchases, we dug through the dealnews archives from years past to see what goods are, well, good to buy in April, and what you should hold off on purchasing. From early spring apparel sales to aggressive iPad prices, here's what's in store this month for the smart shopper.

Kindle Fire HD at All-Time Low Price Points

Many industry analysts assume that Amazon's Kindle Fire HD tablets are priced near the manufacturing cost, which would mean that Amazon doesn't make much money, if any, from the sales. Likely as a result, we typically haven't seen large or frequent discounts on these tablets. However, last month Amazon announced that it would cut prices on its entire fleet of 8.9" Fire HD Special Offers tablets. Prices now start at $269 for the base 16GB Wifi version, and although we've seen that particular model for less before, in general, each model is now at or near the lowest price we've seen ? making it a good time to give the Fire HD a try.

Skip the Canon T5i and Opt for a T4i Deal

Canon recently announced the newest model in its EOS Rebel line, the T5i, but it appears to offer minimal updates to the previous-generation T4i. The major difference between the two comes down to price: Since the T4i is no longer the latest model, it will see discounts that make it at least $340 less than the T5i. In fact, last month we saw the body and kit lens bundle fall to its best-ever price of $560, and we expect to see that price (or a better one) again in the coming weeks.

Mid-Season Clothing Sales Coming to a Retailer Near You

The general rule to dressing yourself in deals is to wait about two months after a new season of apparel hits stores before cashing in on sizable discounts. Many retailers began debuting their spring merchandise in February, placing April at about the 2-month mark. Look closely at the discounts though: a spring clothing sale that takes 30% to 40% off is likely a mid-season promotion; for discounts of 50% off or more, wait until May.

I Spy iPad Deals

Supposedly Apple will be updating the iPad this month, which means that the fourth generation iDevice that was released in October 2012 will start to see significant price cuts from resellers like MacMall, Fry's Electronics, and Best Buy. Moreover, Apple-refurbished iPad 4s will also drop in price, at which point you'd do well to keep an eye on both the Apple Store and its mysterious eBay site; we've noticed that the eBay store will occasionally offer prices lower than what Apple charges directly, while still being reconditioned by the manufacturer with a full 1-year warranty. However, as far as getting a deal on the brand new model, our data suggests that we won't see a deal on the latest iPad until at least one month after it's released, at which point you could save as much as $59.

Jump Start Your Mother's Day Shopping

If you're thinking about buying some baubles for Mother's Day, then start looking now. We still find and list deals, coupons, and sales for jewelry in May, but often times we see slightly higher final prices on styles right before the holiday. This is especially true of online jewelry retailers.

Get Your Fill of Tax Day Freebies

There are few people in this world who don't appreciate getting something for free, and luckily, one of the most popular days for restaurants to offer something gratis takes place in April: Tax Day. Fast food and nationwide chains in particular will offer some sort of freebie on April 16, and if the offers are anything like last year, then you should be on the lookout for opportunities to get a free cup of coffee, free breakfast foods, or free side orders or desserts with the purchase of an entr?e. We also found Office Depot's promotion last year, in which the store amusingly offered to shred 5 lbs. of documents for free, an enticing option.

Wait Until Black Friday to Upgrade Your Vacuum

Many sources suggest buying a new vacuum cleaner in the spring, and as ideal and motivating as that may sound, according to our archives, there are almost twice as many deals on these handy home appliances in October and November. Moreover, the quality of the deals will be better in the fall as well, as we typically see a higher number of Editors' Choice?discounts in particular. So make do with your cleaner for now and upgrade in a few months time instead.

Put Off a Mattress Purchase Until Memorial Day

May is generally a good time to find a deal on a new mattress, and indeed for the past two years the sales we saw on mattresses received deeper discounts in May over April. Therefore, it's important to keep in mind that any discounts you see this month could very likely get even steeper if you wait until May, specifically around Memorial Day weekend when department stores roll out holiday-related promotions. Not quite ready for a new mattress? Last year we saw excellent discounts on mattresses around Black Friday and Cyber Monday as well, so you'll have another opportunity to cash in on strong deals later in the year.

Deals on Big-Screen HDTVs Near or Below Black Friday Prices

If you're looking to upgrade to a big-screen HDTV, there's never been a better time. 60", 55", and 55" 3D TVs are at or very near all-time lows.

55" 3D LCD HDTVs, for instance, hit all-time lows last month, with prices starting at $747 ? that's $3 under February's best price. Likewise, 55" (non-3D) name-brand LCD HDTVs hit their second-lowest price of the past 12 months and deals started at $688. That's a $51 difference from our all-time low during Black Friday! Lastly, 60" LCD HDTVs bottomed out at $698 in March, which is just $10 shy of the size category's best price set back in Black Friday.

Core i5 Ivy Bridge Laptop Prices Hit Rock Bottom

Sales of new Windows 8 laptops are bad. So bad that Microsoft is offering OEMs discounts of up to 20% on licenses for Windows 8 (and Office). While those discounts are generally for ultraportables, our deal archives show they're also affecting prices of mainstream 15" Ivy Bridge laptops. For instance, just last month we saw a 15.6" Acer Aspire with 6GB of RAM and a 750GB hard drive go for an unprecedented $299. That's the lowest price we've seen for any Ivy Bridge system. It's also $41 under our February mention, which at the time was also an all-time low. While we doubt we'll see such significant price drops in April, we predict this $299 price will become the new norm as it makes its way to touchscreen Windows 8 laptops.

Researchers show stem cell fate depends on 'grip'

Friday, March 29, 2013

The field of regenerative medicine holds great promise, propelled by greater understanding of how stem cells differentiate themselves into many of the body's different cell types. But clinical applications in the field have been slow to materialize, partially owing to difficulties in replicating the conditions these cells naturally experience.

A team of researchers from the University of Pennsylvania has generated new insight on how a stem cell's environment influences what type of cell a stem cell will become. They have shown that whether human mesenchymal stem cells turn into fat or bone cells depends partially on how well they can "grip" the material they are growing in.

The research was conducted by graduate student Sudhir Khetan and associate professor Jason Burdick, along with professor Christopher Chen, all of the School of Engineering and Applied Science's Department of Bioengineering. Others involved in the study include Murat Guvendiren, Wesley Legant and Daniel Cohen.

Their study was published in the journal Nature Materials.

Much research has been done on how stem cells grow on two-dimensional substrates, but comparatively little work has been done in three dimensions. Three-dimensional environments, or matrices, for stems cells have mostly been treated as simple scaffolding, rather than as a signal that influences the cells' development.

Burdick and his colleagues were interested in how these three-dimensional matrices impact mechanotransduction, which is how the cell takes information about its physical environment and translates that to chemical signaling.

"We're trying to understand how material signals can dictate stem cell response," Burdick said. "Rather than considering the material as an inert structure, it's really guiding stem cell fate and differentiation ? what kind of cells they will turn into."

The mesenchymal stem cells the researchers studied are found in bone marrow and can develop into several cell types: osteoblasts, which are found in bone; chondrocytes, which are found in cartilage; and adipocytes, which are found in fat.

The researchers cultured them in water-swollen polymer networks known as hydrogels, which share some similarities with the environments stem cells naturally grow in. These materials are generally soft and flexible ? contact lenses, for example, are a type of hydrogel ? but can vary in density and stiffness depending on the type and quantity of the bonds between the polymers. In this case, the researchers used covalently cross-linked gels, which contain irreversible chemical bonds.

When seeded on top of two-dimensional covalently cross-linked gels, mesenchymal stem cells spread and pulled on the material differently depending on how stiff it was. Critically, the mechanics guide cell fate, or the type of cells they differentiate it into. A softer environment would produce more fat-like cells and a stiffer environment, where the cells can pull on the gel harder, would produce more bone-like cells.

However, when the researchers put mesenchymal stem cells inside three-dimensional hydrogels of varying stiffness, they didn't see these kinds of changes.

"In most covalently cross-linked gels, the cells can't spread into the matrix because they can't degrade the bonds ? they all become fat cells," Burdick said. "That tells us that in 3D covalent gels the cells don't translate the mechanical information the same way they do in a 2D system."

To test this, the researchers changed the chemistry of their hydrogels so that the polymer chains were connected by a peptide that the cells could naturally degrade. They hypothesized that, as the cells spread, they would be able to get a better grip on their surrounding environment and thus be more likely to turn into bone-like cells.

In order to determine how well the cells were pulling on their environment, the researchers used a technique developed by Chen's lab called 3D traction force microscopy. This technique involves seeding the gel with microscopic beads, then tracking their location before and after a cell is removed.

"Because the gel is elastic and will relax back into its original position when you remove the cells," Chen said, "you can quantify how much the cells are pulling on the gel based on how much and which way it springs back after the cell is removed."

The results showed that the stem cells' differentiation into bone-like cells was aided by their ability to better anchor themselves into the growth environment.

"With our original experiment, we observed that the cells essentially didn't pull on the gel. They adhered to it and were viable, but we did not see bead displacement. They couldn't get a grip," Burdick said. "When we put the cells into a gel where they could degrade the bonds, we saw them spread into the matrix and deform it, displacing the beads."

As an additional test, the researchers synthesized another hydrogel. This one had the same covalent bonds that the stem cells could naturally degrade and spread through but also another type of bond that could form when exposed to light. They let the stem cells spread as before, but at the point the cells would begin to differentiate ? about a week after they were first encapsulated ? the researchers further "set" the gel by exposing it to light, forming new bonds the cells couldn't degrade.

"When we introduced these cross-links so they could no longer degrade the matrix, we saw an increase toward fat-like cells, even after letting them spread," Burdick said. "This further supports the idea that continuous degradation is needed for the cells to sense the material properties of their environment and transduce that into differentiation signals."

Burdick and his colleagues see these results as helping develop a better fundamental understanding of how to engineer tissues using stem cells.

"This is a model system for showing how the microenvironment can influence the fate of the cells," Burdick said.

Leg of Lamb

Here are some very special Easter recipes from the folks at Irishcultureandcustoms.com.

As they explain, in old Ireland, Easter Sunday was a day of great celebration, not the least of which was the blessed relief from the abstinence of meat for nearly two months.

Here, you can take your pick from lamb or ham. Following the main dish recipes is a perfect vegetable accompaniment to any spring-time dinner menu. And for "afters" - the Irish word for dessert? their resident Irish recipe collectors and contributors offer a delightful suggestion.

Garlic-ginger Roast Leg of Lamb

Preparation Time: 35 minutes
Roasting Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
Cooking Tip: The crust mixture can be made and spread on the lamb up to 1 day ahead. Cover loosely with foil and refrigerate.

Ingredients:

8-pound bone-in leg of lamb, trimmed of excess fat.
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint (optional)
1/2 teaspoons each salt and pepper
2 teaspoons each minced garlic and fresh ginger
2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
1 cup beef broth
2 teaspoons lemon juice
1/8 teaspoon pepper

Method:

1. Heat oven to 450 degree F. Have ready a large roasting pan with a rack. Place lamb on rack.

2. Mix oil, mint, garlic, ginger, salt and pepper in a small bowl. Add flour and stir until blended. Spread over top and sides of the lamb.

3. Roast 30 minutes, and then reduce temperature to 325 degrees F. and roast 45 to 60 minutes longer until done as desired. {Rare: 130 F. on a meat thermometer inserted in thickest part not touching fat or bone; 140 F for medium and 150 degrees F. for medium-well}.

4. Remove to a serving platter, cover loosely with foil to keep warm and let stand 15 minutes. {As meat rests, juices redistribute and internal temperatures should rise about 10 degrees}.

5. Meanwhile spoon off and discard fat from the roasting pan. Place pan over high heat, (see note below is using a disposable foil pan), add beef broth and bring to a boil, scraping up browned bits from the bottom of the pan. Boil 2 minutes to reduce liquid slightly. Pour into a sauceboat and stir in lemon juice and pepper, This will make 2/3 cup to drizzle over sliced lamb. Serves 12 with leftovers.

Note: If using a foil roasting pan, bring the broth to a boil in a saucepan, pour into foil pan (do not place on burner) and stir to scrape up brown bits on bottom. Pour broth back into saucepan and boil and season as directed above.

GLAZED HAM with HORSERADISH-MUSTARD SAUCE

Preparation Time: 22 minutes
Baking Time: 2 Hours
Cooking Tip: The sauce and the Glace can be made up to 3 days ahead and refrigerated.
Ingredients:
7-pound shank or rump-end, fully cooked bone-in smoked ham.

GLAZE:

2/3 cup light brown sugar
1/4 cup honey
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

SAUCE:

1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/2 cup reduced-fat sour cream
3 tablespoons Dijon mustard
2 tablespoons snipped chives or green part of scallions
1 teaspoon prepared white horseradish
1/2 teaspoon pepper

Method

1. Heat oven to 325 degrees F. Line a shallow roasting pan rack with foil. Set a sturdy, flat metal rack in pan.

2. Cut rind off ham and trim off excess fat, if any. Place ham on rack, sut end down. Cover loosely with foil and bake 1 1/4 hours.

3. Meanwhile whisk Glaze ingredients in one small bowl and Sauce ingredients in another small bowl until blended.

4. Remove foil from ham and spread evenly with Glaze. Bake uncovered 40 to 45 minutes or until a meat thermometer inserted in the thickest part {not touching the bone} registers 140 degrees F. Let ham rest 15 minutes before slicing. Serve with the Sauce.
Serves 12 with leftovers.
Glazed Asparagus & Carrots with Pecans
A lemon glaze tops a springtime combination of fresh asparagus and carrots.

Ingredients:

1 cup water
3 large (2 cups) carrots, sliced diagonally 1/4-inch
1 pound fresh asparagus, trimmed
1/4 cup Butter
1 teaspoon cornstarch
3 tablespoons water
1 tablespoon lemon juice
1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
2 tablespoons chopped pecans, toasted

Method

1. Place 1 cup water in 10-inch skillet over medium heat. Bring to a full boil; add carrots and asparagus. Cover; continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until carrots and asparagus are crisply tender (7 to 9 minutes). Drain. Set aside; keep warm.

2. Melt butter in same skillet. Stir together cornstarch, 3 tablespoons water and lemon juice in small bowl; stir into butter. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, until sauce thickens (2 to 3 minutes). Stir in lemon peel.

To serve, spoon sauce over warm carrots and asparagus. Sprinkle with pecans. Yield: 6 servings

EASTER BASKET CAKE

Ingredients:

Cake:
1 cup butter, softened
1 cups granulated sugar
4 eggs
2 tablespoons vanilla extract
2 & cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 1/2 cups buttermilk
Butter Icing:
1 cup softened butter
5 cups icing sugar alternately with 1/3 cup of milk
2 tablespoons of vanilla extract
Fluffy Icing:
1 cup white corn syrup
2 egg whites
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Method:

1. Grease sides of three 9-inch round cake pans; line bottoms with parchment or waxed paper. Set aside.

2. In a large bowl, beat the butter with the sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, beating well after each. Beat in vanilla extract.

3. Combine flour, baking powder and baking soda. Stir into butter mixture alternately with the buttermilk, making 3 additions of flour mixture and 2 additions of buttermilk.

4. Divide among the three prepared cake pans, smoothing the tops. Bake in the center of the oven at 350 degrees F. (180 C) oven for 30 minutes or until a cake tester comes out clean. Let cool in the pans on a wire rack for 15 minutes.

5. Run knife around edges and turn the cake out onto the rack and peel off the paper. Turn right side up, let cool on racks. While cakes are cooling, mix up the frostings.

Butter Icing

This easy all purpose icing covers the cake with delicious flavors. In a bowl, beat 1 cup softened butter till fluffy; then beat in 5 cups icing sugar alternately with 1/3 cup of milk; making 3 additions of sugar and 2 of milk. Then beat in 2 tablespoons of vanilla extract.

Fluffy Icing

This light-textured, not too sweet icing is ideal for matching feather-light angel food cake. It works well on cupcakes as well. Freeze any leftovers in an air-tight container for up to 2 weeks.

In a saucepan, bring corn syrup to boil over high heat. Meanwhile, in a bowl set over simmering water, beat egg whites with cream of tarter until frothy. Beat in corn syrup in a thin steady stream; beat for about 4 minutes or until stiff peaks form.? Remove from heat; beat in vanilla.

Cake Assembly

For the basket handle, we painted one we removed from an inexpensive Easter basket.

1. Spread Butter Icing over top of two cake layers.? Place 1 of the layers on a flat serving plate and stack remaining layers on top. Refrigerate for 1 hour or until icing is firm.

2. Remove 1 cup of Fluffy Icing, set aside.

3. Spread remaining icing over top and sides of cake. While the icing is still soft, make a "basket weave" on the sides of the cake. Pull a skewer vertically from the bottom to the top at ?-inch intervals. Pull the skewer horizontally at ?-inch intervals from 1 line to the next, stopping at each line and lifting at end of the stroke.

4. Using a piping bag fitted with a ?-inch plain tip, pipe the reserved icing into beads around the top and bottom edges.

5. Decorate with cookies (if you wish) propping them up with small marshmallows. Or "fill the top of the basket" with assorted Easter candies. Makes 12 servings.

Variation: One year we made Easter "grass" with shredded coconut and placed it on top of the basket cake and then placed colored eggs on top of it.? Combine 3 drops of green food coloring with a teaspoons of water. Stir it into 1 1/2 cups of sweetened coconut flakes until evenly tinted, but you must use it immediately.

Iraqi Catholics celebrate Easter

(AP) ? Iraq's Catholic Christians flocked to churches to celebrate Easter Sunday, praying, singing and rejoicing in the resurrection of Christ behind high blast walls and tight security cordons.

It was the first Easter since the election of Pope Francis in Rome, and worshipers said they hoped their new spiritual leader would help strengthen their tiny community that has shrunk under the joint pressures of militant attacks and economic hardships.

At the St. Joseph Chaldean Church in Baghdad, some 200 worshipers stood and sat during parts of the Easter mass led by Father Saad Sirop.

"We pray for love and peace to spread through the world," said worshiper Fatin Yousef, 49. Like most worshippers she arrived have dressed immaculately for mass, her hair tumbling in salon-created curls, wearing a tidy black skirt, low-heeled pumps and a striped shirt. "We hope Pope Francis will help make it better for Christians in Iraq."

There are an estimated 400,000 to 600,000 Christians in Iraq, with most belonging to ancient eastern churches. There has been no census in Iraq for 16 years, making precise figures difficult to obtain.

An estimated two-thirds of Iraq's Christians are Catholics of the Chaldean church and the smaller Assyrian Catholic church. Worshipers of both churches chant in versions of ancient Aramaic, the language that Jesus spoke, although the dialects would be mutually unintelligible.

Since the 2003 U.S.-led invasion, Iraqi Christians have suffered repeated attacks by Islamic militants. Hundreds of thousands have left the country, with church officials estimating their communities have at least halved. The worst attack was at Baghdad's soaring Our Lady of Salvation church in October 2010. It killed more than 50 worshipers and wounded scores more.

More broadly, decades of immigration have shrunken the size of Christian communities throughout the Middle East, with most leaving for better opportunities and to join families abroad.

Other Christians in the region no longer feel comfortable among majority-Muslim communities that many believe have become more outwardly pious and politically Islamist over the decades.

They included Iraqi Christian worshiper Yousef's son, who moved to live with relatives in Arizona last year. Yousef said she was arranging for her other daughter and son to immigrate.

"There's still fear here, and there's no stability in this country," she said.

Iraqi officials have made efforts to secure churches since the violence of 2010.

High blast walls topped with netting and barbed wire surrounded the St. Joseph Church in Baghdad in the middle-class district of Karradeh. Blue-khaki clad Iraqi police guarded roads surrounding the church and checked papers of passers-by as worshipers filtered inside.

Four Iraqi Christian volunteers, two men and two women, stood at the church entrance to double-check who was coming in.

White-robed church volunteers marched down the church aisle behind Father Sirop, who chanted and waved thickly-scented incense that wafted through the building. The white-painted interior was adorned with three ornate chandeliers and a series of simple paintings illustrating the life of Christ.

Worshipers stood for lengthy passages of Sirop's mass, at one point bursting into applause when he told them, "Celebrate! You are Christians!"

Man City beats Newcastle 4-0 in Premier League

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:01 p.m. ET March 30, 2013

MANCHESTER, England (AP) -Manchester City scored two goals in each half to cruise to a 4-0 win over Newcastle in the Premier League on Saturday and maintain its slim hopes of catching rival Manchester United for the title.

Carlos Tevez and David Silva both netted late in the first half to put City firmly in control and Vincent Kompany marked his return from an eight-game absence by netting the third in the 56th.

James Perch's own goal in the 69th capped the scoring for a dominant City, which strengthened its grip on second place but remained 15 points behind United with eight games to play.

Tevez slid in to turn Gael Clichy's cross at the far post in the 41st minute for his seventh goal in six games and 17th overall this season. Newcastle never had a chance to recover, as Clichy and Edin Dzeko both forced saves from Rob Elliott over the next few minutes before Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri combined to set Silva up for the second.

Kompany then scored his first goal for City in nearly a year, flicking home Gareth Barry's off-target shot to put the result beyond doubt. Kompany missed the previouse eight games with a calf injury, but played for Belgium during the international break.

The fourth came after Toure strode through Newcastle's defense and beat Elliot at his near post with a shot that deflected off Perch.

City will face United in a Manchester derby at Old Trafford next weekend, when it can further delay its rivals title celebrations.

Syracuse on to Final Four, beats Marquette 55-39

WASHINGTON (AP) ? When played to perfection, there's nothing quite like Syracuse's aggressive, half-court 2-3 zone defense.

It's 40 minutes of trapping and shot-challenging, of closing off angles, of trusting teammates.

"We showed," senior guard Brendan Triche said, "that defense wins games."

Yes, the Orange D certainly does.

With a second suffocating performance at the East Regional, No. 4-seeded Syracuse shut down No. 3 Marquette 55-39 Saturday to earn coach Jim Boeheim his fourth trip to the Final Four ? and first since a freshman named Carmelo Anthony helped win the 2003 NCAA championship.

"A tremendous, tremendous defensive effort," Boeheim said.

Fittingly, a matchup between schools from the soon-to-break-apart, rough-and-tumble Big East became quite a struggle on the offensive end. Syracuse (30-9) was led by senior forward James Southerland's 16 points. Michael Carter-Williams, a 6-foot-6 guard who is out front in the zone, was named the regional's top player after accounting for 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists, five steals and only one turnover Saturday.

Marquette (26-9) hadn't scored fewer than 47 points all season ? and, indeed, put up 74 in a victory over Syracuse on Feb. 25. But this time, Marquette kept turning the ball over, seeing its shots blocked or just plain missing.

The Golden Eagles' 39 points were a record low for a team in an NCAA tournament regional final since the shot clock was introduced in 1986.

"They beat us from start to finish. We collectively tried everything we knew to try," Marquette coach Buzz Williams said. "It is the zone, and it is the players in the zone."

Much like what happened Thursday in the regional semifinals, when Syracuse knocked off top-seeded Indiana by limiting it to a season-low output, too.

"I don't think we've played as good defensively as these last two games," Triche said. "We held some good teams down."

All told, Marquette made only 12 of 53 shots ? 23 percent ? and was 3 for 24 on 3-pointers. Vander Blue, who carried Marquette to the round of eight, was held to 14 points on 3-for-15 shooting.

"They cover ground really good. You've got to get the ball in the middle, you've got to play inside out, you've got to get to the free-throw line and wear them down with the 3-pointer when you can," Blue said. "They're really good at what they do in that zone."

Consider these numbers through four games in the tournament: Syracuse is averaging 6.5 blocks and 10.8 steals, while forcing opponents into 29 percent shooting, including 15 percent on 3-pointers.

"We couldn't get one to drop in from up close," said Marquette's Jamil Wilson, who was 0 for 5 on 3-pointers, 1 for 9 overall. "We couldn't get one to drop in from outside."

The next team to try to solve that defense will be the winner of Sunday's South Regional final between Florida and Michigan. Syracuse is 3-0 in national semifinal games under Boeheim.

And to think: Exactly three weeks ago, in this very same building, Syracuse wrapped up its final Big East regular-season schedule before heading to the Atlantic Coast Conference with a bad-as-can-be performance in a lopsided loss to Georgetown. Syracuse's 39 points that day were the Orange's tiniest total in a half-century.

That was Syracuse's fourth loss in a span of five games, a stumbling way to head into tournament play.

That night, Boeheim forgot to adjust his alarm clock to account for daylight saving time, and so showed up late for a pre-practice coaches' meeting. His players, turned out, had organized their own session without supervision, starting the work it would take to get going in the right direction.

"I watched them for a few minutes and it was really a good thing. I thought our practices were really good after that," Boeheim said. "You can turn things around in this game."

Since then, Syracuse has won seven of eight.

"When you bounce back like that, that says a lot about your kids, your team and your character," Boeheim said. "This is a heck of a bounce back."

And the secret to success? Defense, naturally.

"We got the right personnel for each key position," C.J. Fair said. "We got big long guards, we got big long forwards that can cover ground and our centers do a good job holding down the inside."

Because of that, Syracuse really needed only one run on offense in the second half, making five shots in a row during a spurt that gave it a 41-28 lead with 9? minutes left.

Last season, Syracuse fell a victory short of the Final Four, losing to Ohio State in the round of eight.

"We wanted to get over the hump," Southerland said. "That's what I told the guys: We've still got two more to go."

With President Barack Obama ? a basketball fan who picked Indiana to win the title ? and NFL Rookie of the Year Robert Griffin III of the Washington Redskins sitting in the crowd, Syracuse harassed Marquette into missing 14 of its first 15 tries from beyond the 3-point arc.

Marquette started 1 for 10 overall on field-goal tries, with Blue's 3-pointer about 1? minutes in the only make. He celebrated as though it came at the end of the game, not the outset, punching the air and tapping defender Triche on the back while heading to the other end of the court.

After Blue's 3, Marquette missed its next seven shots. There would be other such stretches. Six misses in a row. Six misses in a row. Even nine in a row.

The Golden Eagles also went nearly 6? minutes without a single field-goal attempt in the first half. Forget about putting the basketball through the net; Syracuse was so smothering, Marquette did not even manage to shoot.

When Southerland hit a 3, off a pass and screen by Carter-Williams, the Orange led 24-18 at halftime.

After helping cut down the net to celebrate Saturday, Southerland was asked whether he thought this sort of thing was possible when his team was leaving the same arena on March 9 after losing meekly to Georgetown.

"We just did a good job of recovering from that," Southerland explained, "and not sulking."

Cyprus by Other Means - John Ransom - Townhall Finance ...

Stocks in the S&P 500 are now at record low valuations; the market trades as cheaply as it did in 1980 as measured by price-to-earnings, or PE, ratios, trading at a PE ratio of 15.4 times earnings.

While retail stock investors have largely been stuck on the sidelines, the stock market has made new highs. But despite the upward surge, things aren't as rosy for Wall Street as one might suppose.

Although individuals have added almost $20 billion to U.S. stock funds so far this year, the amount is just 3.5 percent of the withdrawals since 2007, Investment News.com?reported, and compares with $44 billion placed with fixed-income managers in 2013, according to the Investment Company Institute.

Fund inflows tend to buttress the beliefs of those who think the stock market?s short-term bull run can continue. As the old adage goes, individual investors don?t make money in the market, they just borrow from the institutions for a while.

The lack of participation by retail investors in the continuing rally would seem to indicate we have yet to hit a top -- because the retail money has yet to hit the market.? And that?s the line of reasoning I would have used 10 years ago. ?But a lot has changed in 10 years.

There?s a growing sense of alienation between Wall Street and Main Street. Much of the alienation has to do with the lack of the right type of oversight on money and markets. That lack of confidence, which is largely political in nature, hurts PEs.

Last week, Attorney General Eric Holder, for example, announced he'd have difficulty prosecuting too-big-to-fail management, not because there was no violation of the laws, but simply because it might affect the economy at home and abroad.

"I am concerned that the size of some of these institutions become so large that it does become difficult for us to prosecute them when we are hit with indications that if we do prosecute -- if we do bring a criminal charge -- it will have a negative impact on the national economy, perhaps even the world economy," Holder told senators this month. "I think that is a function of the fact that some of these institutions have become too large."

So in other words, people like former Barack Obama economic capo, Democrat Jon Corzine, will be off the hook after his firm, MG Global, ?misplaced? $1.6 billion in customer-segregated accounts in one of the top 10 bankruptcies in the country?s history.

Social Drives Far Less Traffic Than SEO | Internet Billboards

This is an interesting debate. My friend Randy makes good points, but I?ve seen social beat SEO for our brand time and again. I?m interested to see what others think about SEO versus social ? I think you need a healthy dose of both, but perhaps not!

Anyone who has any type of online business needs to carefully consider the way they do online marketing.

Many businesses choose to use?search engine optimization?(SEO) to drive traffic to their website, while other businesses choose to mainly use social media to drive traffic. Social media includes Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, etc.

When a person types a query into a search engine (Google, Bing, Safari, etc.) and clicks Search they get a list of websites as their results that contain the query they typed in. Most users visit websites that are shown at the top of the list or on the first page. The reason a website makes it to the top of the list is because they? have very good SEO strategies.??SEO?is a technique that helps the search engines find and rank websites. Using proper SEO techniques greatly helps a business get traffic from the search engines.

versus

There are businesses that claim that social media drives more traffic to their website than SEO. With online retail, for example, social media may change the way people shop. This is because friends can easily recommend places that people should shop through social media, such as Facebook.

For this reason, we have decided to check to see if social media is the best avenue for businesses to take to drive traffic to their website, or should they continue using or start using SEO strategies for much-needed traffic.

NO TV? What?!?! | Family Star Montessori ? Discover the community ...

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that children do not watch television for the first 2 years of their lives.? This is because the pixels that make up the pictures on the screen and speed at which they change (not to mention the content), can have damaging effects on children?s brain and eye development.? For more information on the research behind this recommendation, visit www.aap.org.? At a recent event, some parents presented the idea that not all television/ electronic media is bad- such as Sesame Street, programs shown on Nick Jr. etc. and many smart phone apps.? While this argument addresses the issue of the content children are seeing on television, it doesn?t address the effect on children?s brain and eye development.? Children have their whole lives to watch TV (and learn to use technology, for that matter), why not give them the first 2 years to just play?

But, what do you do when television has always been a huge part of your life?? Maybe you?ve always had it on as you are preparing for work in the mornings, or at night as you are winding down after work.? Now you have a small child in your house and you?re not supposed to watch TV.? What do you do?

Here is the briefest list of ideas that will hopefully get you thinking of more and playing with that fantastically fun young one that only wants to play with you:

  • Color
  • Work puzzles
  • Read (or just talk about the pictures in) books- lots of them!
  • Go for a walk
  • Have a dance party in your living room
  • Roll a ball back and forth in the house
  • Throw a ball back and forth out of the house
  • ?Cook? with pots, pans, spoons, spatulas, etc.
  • Explore with water outside or in the bath tub: splash, ?paint? with the water and a paint brush, practice pouring water from one cup to another
  • Have your child help you around the house (fold wash cloths, wipe off table tops, put things away, etc.)
  • Make a tunnel/ car/ train/ rocket ship/ castle out of a box

The most important thing is to follow your child?s lead and just be with them- present: in mind, body, and spirit.? While you?re at it, see just how much fun you can have with your little one.? Eventually, you will begin to not even miss that show on television because you are living in your own reality show.? And, who doesn?t love that?

Rebecca Wilson, MS, is mother to Emogene (IC7) and is an enthusiast for all things related to young children.? She earned her Bachelors Degree in Child Development and her Masters Degree in Early Childhood Education?both?from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.? She has worked with children of all ages from birth through 3rd grade in different positions from teaching to administration to consulting.? Currently, she is a grant manager for the early childhood council in Adams County.

Airlines should charge for overweight passengers, economist ...

Airlines around the globe have gone to great lengths in recent years to reduce the weight they carry, with an eye to decreasing fuel requirements and increasing profit.

The Great Seat Squeeze: How airlines are trying to pack more people on a plane without anybody knowing

Without much fanfare, WestJet Airlines Ltd. has been quietly rolling out some strategic changes to its fleet of Boeing 737s in recent weeks, altering the cabin configuration fairly dramatically to add a new class of seating, all the while packing in more travelers in the rest of its planes.

That was especially true when soaring fuel prices in 2008 threatened to upend the industry ? a year before the recession actually did. But one economist suggests airlines haven?t gone far enough, that it?s time airlines built a system to monetize their greatest weight variable: the passenger.

Removing excess weight from an aircraft can have a tremendous impact on overall profitability and allows it to be more competitive by keeping fares lower.?WestJet Airlines Ltd., for example, has gone to extraordinary measures to reduce weight, from shrinking the size of its in-flight magazine and printing it on lighter paper stock to using a lightweight paint on the aircraft.?Simple things like switching to lighter service carts are saving roughly 1.8 million litres in fuel a year, the carrier said.

Air Canada has done the same, switching to lighter seat covers, carpeting, and even using iPads on flight decks rather than manuals, which save about 40 kilograms per flight.

Both airlines are reducing the amount of water ? even the amount of fuel ? they carry on shorter flights to lighten the load.?The benefits are clear ? Air Canada estimates that for each kilogram it removes from one of its Boeing 763 aircraft, it will save 3,925 kilograms of fuel every year.

At the same time, while charging for excess weight for checked bags has long been the standard, charging to check a second bag ? even a first ? has become common.

Air Canada and WestJet will also be rolling out higher-density cabins in the coming months using lightweight seats that allow for more passengers without overly impacting comfort or the weight of the aircraft.

Many passengers ask why airlines only charge for overweight baggage but not for overweight passengers, if weight is the key concern for an airplane operation and more weight results in more fuel consumption

But while passengers might be already feeling the squeeze, an economist from Norway has another modest proposal for airlines to better balance the weight they carry with the revenue they collect by charging passengers based on overall weight ? including themselves and their luggage.

Bharat Bhatta specializes in econometrics and choice modeling and is an economist working as an associate professor in Sogn og Fjordane University College in Norway. He argues that more airlines should consider a ?pay-as-you-weigh? model for ticketing where those who weighed more than the average passenger would pay more, while those who weighed less would get a discount.

In the March issue of the Journal of Revenue and Pricing Management, Mr. Bhatta wrote that the model would not be discriminatory toward obese people and would also strike a better balance for those who are underweight.

?A passenger gets a fixed amount of weight for the baggage and an unlimited amount of weight for oneself under the status quo,? he wrote in the article.

?Many passengers ask why airlines only charge for overweight baggage but not for overweight passengers, if weight is the key concern for an airplane operation and more weight results in more fuel consumption,? he added.

To be clear, no airline has openly discussed implementing such measures since Irish low-cost carrier Ryan Air first floated the idea in 2009 after nearly a third of its passengers responding to an online survey said they supported the move.

Richard Bartrem, WestJet spokesman, said he believes no carrier, even the ultra-low-cost carriers, has taken the step yet because of the backlash they would receive from consumers.

?The public uproar would not be worth the risk, ? he said. ?Who would want to be the one to take the first step??

But the Canadian Transportation Agency has no specific precedents that would prevent such measure from being implemented, said Chantal Laflamme, a spokesperson for the agency.

The Supreme Court did uphold the CTA?s one-passenger-one-fare policy in 2008, which now prevents Air Canada, WestJet and Jazz from charging the disabled for a second seat, including those who are considered disabled by obesity and unable to fit in a single seat. But the regulations in Canada do not apply to people who are obese but not disabled as a result of their obesity.

Both WestJet and Air Canada require a medical certificate for obese passengers to qualify for the extra seat at no charge. In order to remove error or confusion, Air Canada?s assessment form instructs the qualifying physician to seat the patient on a ?paper covered examination table? and carefully measure and record the size of their posterior. In many other countries, the free seat is not an option.

Several international carriers, including Southwest Airlines, encourage obese passengers to purchase an extra seat under their so-called ?customer of size policy,? which will see the last person to check in to a full flight bumped if it is deemed that the person is too large to fit into a single seat. But not necessarily the obese one.

Last year, the U.K. Court of Appeal also opened the door to so-called ?fat taxes? on passengers when it ruled that the Montreal Convention, a framework of international rules and regulations on air travel, takes precedence over parts of Britain?s discrimination and disability laws once the aircraft leaves the runway, eliminating a passenger?s ability to seek redress for being charged for a second seat.

Linda McKay-Panos, a lawyer and executive director of the Alberta Civil Liberties Research Centre, was the complainant in one of the cases that led to the Supreme Court?s one-passenger-one-fare policy after she was forced to fly in an economy seat on an Air Canada flight in 1997 that couldn?t accommodate her.

Her 11-year fight with the airline to change its policy to accommodate obese people contributed to the changes it has since adopted to not charge for a second seat.

She said the pay-as-you-weigh policy might make a good economic argument, but doesn?t think it would fly here in Canada.

?I think that?s ridiculous,? she said. ?That?s a slippery slope of blaming people. When you?re in the business of serving the public, you take them as they come.?

While the statement may prove contentious, Mr. Bhatta argues the current system is already discriminatory in that passengers who weigh less or are carrying less luggage are already subsidizing the flights of those who are carrying more weight and raise the overall average weight of passengers and therefore fares.

Mr. Bhatta argues airlines have dynamic pricing models that charge different prices to different passengers based on when they book their flights, whether they?re flying direct or with a layover, among other variables to maximize the price of fares and minimize the amount of empty seats on their flights.

?We emphasize that the fare policy that charges heavier passengers more but does not give any discount to lighter passengers can benefit only the airlines but harm the passengers and the society at large,? he said.

But he said carriers are failing to maximize their profitability by not charging more to passengers who are above the average weight and cost them more to fly, he said.

?Charging according to weight is a standard principle in transporting goods by any transport modes such as rail, road, human or pack animals, air and water,? he said.

The more weight in a plane, the more fuel it costs to fly; as a result it is justifiable to say that a passenger should contribute to the cost of flying the plane

?The more weight in a plane, the more fuel it costs to fly; as a result it is justifiable to say that a passenger should contribute to the cost of flying the plane?? he added.

But Mr. Bhatta acknowledged it may be a difficult system to enforce without impacting check-in times and causing major disruptions for the travelling public.

He floated several models from charging based strictly on the weight of the passenger plus their luggage, or the passenger themselves with a weight limit on their bags.

Or, he said, airlines could determine an average weight for a passenger and their bags, and grant them a 25% window on other side before the fees or discounts kick in.

He argued the measures could be enforced either through self-declaration at the time of purchase, with random checks to enforce the issue, or charging a fixed fare with an extra fee tacked on or refunded to a credit card after a weigh-in.

But he also argued it could cut down on security lines, because it could replace the need to charge for a first and second checked bag and reduce carry-on luggage.

?Although every passenger will not benefit from the model, one does not pay for others? excess weight as in an average fare policy. Charging according to weight and space is a universally accepted principle not only in transportation but also in other services,? he said.

? 2014 will be the first electoral test of whether Democrats supporting gay marriage can win re-election in red states (e.g. Hagan, Begich, Baucus). Almost certainly, their calculation is that, win or lose, their fates will rest far more on other issues come next fall, so they may as well follow their consciences (and campaign pocket books) and align themselves with their blue-state brethren.

? The "Draft Brendan Johnson for Senate" campaign has drawn plenty of skepticism, but the senator's son has nothing on Nina Turner when it comes to fake shows of "organic" support. The new website that sprang up urging the Ohio state senator to run for secretary of state is paid for by her own campaign committee.

? Last night, Curtis Bostic laid out the strongest version yet of his argument against Mark Sanford: that he is a "compromised candidate" who would more easily fall to Elizabeth Colbert Busch -- and the national Dems backing her -- in a general election. While it appears to be true that there are anti-Sanford votes out there, if Bostic can't attract enough to overcome him now it's hard to imagine Colbert Busch accomplishing that feat in an 18-point GOP district in May.

With the right amount of knowledge, you will be able to efficiently increase web traffic through optimization of your website. Read on for more useful SEO tips.

Strive to design each page of your website in a way that makes it stand out from every other. Pay particular attention to the titles you use. These are extremely important for search engine optimization purposes. Including your keyword or phrase in the titles on your pages is important towards ranking highly on search engines.

If you have a site that is written in a non-english language, use the language meta tag. That's because search engines will rank you higher when people do a search for your content in that language.

Research any outside SEO company before signing over the work to them. Lots of SEO companies will charge too much for sub-standard work. Read online reviews and testimonials from previous companies to make sure that the company you're looking to hire is the real deal. Your wallet will thank you later.

Once you have discovered the right key phrases for your website, you should put that key phrase in your title. The first impression of your site is generated by the title, so choose it with care. This way, your site will be clicked because it most fits the search results the user typed in.

Ask yourself the question "how would somebody find my site if they were searching for it?" Then ensure that you have multiple uses of these keywords scattered through your site. Include your keywords in the titles of your pages and throughout your content, but don't overuse them. Stuffing your pages full of keywords will cause the search engines to lower your search ranking.

An important SEO tip is to keep an eye on your search rankings. It is crucial that you track your results to understand how your SEO is doing. One easy way to track your progress is by using the Google Analytics tool.

Retaining the visitors you get from search engines will not only increase your profits, but also your search engine rank. It is proven that spending more time working on a site increases the page rank. This trend has been established through metrics like Quantcast scores. When customers can chat, discuss, and interact with each other on your site, they are more likely to stay longer.

Keywords will help you improve the visibility of your sites. Coordinate your keywords with your article topics. This makes it easier for search engines to index your work. Therefore, it's easier for readers who may be trying to locate your articles. The keyword you want to focus on should appear several times in your article's text, as well as in its title and summary.

There are several options you can use to get inbound links to your website. Article writing, message forums, press releases, directory submissions and blogs can all provide your site with traffic. A great way to improve your SEO is to use good outbound links.

This will help increase your search engine rankings. The meta description appears right under the website link in many search engines, so use this text to grab a potential customer's attention. If you are using a popular CMS, you might be able to edit meta descriptions directly from the control panel.

The most important thing that you can do for your site is to make sure that you always keep the content on the site fresh and unique. People won't want to visit your website if you simply present the same old information indefinitely.

If you want to have successful SEO results, you need a site map. This will make it easier for spiders to crawl on your site. If your site is particularly large, you may need multiple maps. In general, try not to have more than 100 links on each map.

These descriptions will let your web site show up higher in search ratings. The meta description refers to the short description that appears in search results. Use important keywords and encourage your readers to take action and visit your site. Check to see if your content management software makes it easy for you to write a meta description on the same page you create your content on.

Meta tags should be as clear and descriptive as possible. Add a concise description to every meta tag on your site. This will increase click through rates.

Keyword density is vital when you optimize a web page for search engines. Focus on keeping each page's keyword content well under 20 percent.

You should now know that SEO is a very important part of internet marketing. By abiding by the advice in this article, you will be able to optimize your website. As long as your website is of high-quality, you will be more likely to receive a lot of traffic, which will lead to more profits.

SnapPea Photos Puts the Photos on Your Android in Chrome?s Toolbar

SnapPea Photos Puts the Photos on Your Android in Chrome’s Toolbar Android/Chrome: If you take a ton of photos on your Android phone and want to quickly get to them on your PC or Mac, SnapPea Photos puts them all one click away.

The app comes in two parts: the previously mentioned SnapPea Android app on your phone, and a Chrome extension. Once installed, all of the photos on your Android device, whether it's a phone or a tablet, will be available right under the Chrome extension's toolbar button. You'll need a SnapPea account for the tools to work, but once you're signed in, you can browse all of your photos on the web, share them with friends, or download them to your PC from your browser.

The full version of SnapPea still lets you completely manage your phone, including your photos, but the benefit of a Chrome extension is that you can install it somewhere without having to download the whole SnapPea package. Plus, while SnapPea's management tools are Windows only, the Chrome extension works everywhere Chrome does, and the photos uploaded are private unless you download and share them. Alternatively, you could use the Instant Upload features for Dropbox, Google+, or Facebook to get your photos web-accessible?just make sure they're not public if you don't want them to be.
