Greek subway workers end strike after arrest threat

ATHENS (Reuters) - Striking Greek subway workers trickled back to work on Friday after the government threatened them with arrest, ending a nine-day walkout that paralyzed public transport in Athens.

The showdown had turned into the latest test for Greece's fragile three-party ruling coalition as it faces down unions to try to implement austerity measures demanded by foreign lenders as the price for bailout funds.

Traffic slowly resumed on Athens' subway lines on Friday afternoon after workers protesting wage cuts were served orders to return to work or face jail, the first time the government has invoked such legislation since it took power in June.

"The workers who were handed the notice didn't have a choice. We are exploring legal options," said Manthos Tsakos, general secretary of the main subway workers' union.

Earlier on Friday, police forced their way through a metal gate at a train depot in Athens to break up an overnight sit-in by 90 transport workers against wage cuts. Scuffles broke out and at least three people were detained before being released.

The radical leftist opposition Syriza party, which is leading in some opinion polls, said the police intervention was a "barbaric" attack on workers' rights.

Eager to show lenders and Greeks that it is determined to implement promised reforms, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras has taken a hard line on the strikers despite facing criticism from one of his own coalition partners.

"Under no circumstances can the government allow the country to be derailed and to let the sacrifices of the Greek people go to waste," Development Minister Kostis Hatzidakis, who oversees transport issues, said in a televised statement.

Other transport unions held strikes in solidarity with subway workers on Friday, leaving Athens without bus, tram, trolleybus or rail services, and causing gridlock across the city.

Traffic ground to a halt in the capital, fuelling public anger against the strike which affected more than a million commuters in a city of 5 million people.

"HARD TO HAVE SYMPATHY"

"This week has been hell. How can they expect people to be on their side when they do this to us? We're all suffering (from austerity) but it's very difficult to have any sympathy for them," said 50-year-old Dionisis Kefalas.

Other commuters, worn down by years of frequent strikes and exasperated by the long wait for a taxi to work, agreed.

"Ordinary people are being inconvenienced - as if our problems weren't bad enough," said Daphne Kiritsi, 46, an office clerk, who said she had paid 200 euros out of her 800-euro monthly salary for taxis this week.

Subway employees oppose being included in a unified wage scheme for public sector workers drawn up under an austerity program that would slash their salaries.

Under the emergency law invoked, which is meant to be used in times of war, natural disaster or risks to public health, workers can be arrested and jailed for up to five years.

Subway, shipyard and other public sector workers planned to march on Friday to parliament in Syntagma Square, the scene of often violent protests in recent years.

The most powerful unions threw their support behind the subway workers.

"The workers' struggle will continue until justice is had," said Nikos Kioutsoukis, general secretary of the GSEE private sector union, which has called a 24-hour strike against austerity measures next month.

Employee is own lawyer? - Business Management Daily

North Carolina?s employment and discrimination laws would appear to give em??ployees many ways to sue their employers. Fortunately, each has specific requirements, which means employees who act as their own lawyers will have a hard time using them to sue you.

Recent case: Kathryn was a correctional officer for North Caro??lina Department of Public Safety. Two years into the job, she filed a sexual harassment complaint, alleging that a supervisor had har??assed her. However, after filing an EEOC complaint, she never pursued a lawsuit because she said she couldn?t afford an attorney.

Later, Kathryn got into a fight with a co-worker, leading to her termination.

Representing herself, Kathryn sued, alleging she had been retaliated against for filing the original EEOC complaint. Her suit cited several federal laws, plus the North Carolina Equal Em??ployment Practices Act (NCEEPA), the public policy exception to the state?s at-will employment doctrine and the North Caro??lina Retaliatory Employment Discrimination Act (REDA).

The court dismissed each claim. It pointed out that the NCEEPA does not let employees sue to enforce equal employment rights. It concluded that the public policy exception doesn?t cover sexual harassment retaliation. Finally, it noted that under the REDA, employees must complain to the state Department of Labor within 180 days of the alleged em????ployment incident. Kathryn had not done so. Her case was dismissed. (Johnson v. State of North Caro??lina, No. 5:11-CV-57, WD NC, 2012)

Final note: Of course, you shouldn?t ignore North Carolina anti-discrimination laws. Employees often find competent attorneys who are waiting to pounce on employers that let their guards down. If you aren?t familiar with these laws, educate yourself.

Peace and Penguins: Relationships and Love. Oh, Brother.

Here's the deal: I'm tired of seeing hateful, one-sided, ugly relationships.

So many people in this generation are afraid to be alone, and that irks me to the very core. Where is the confidence? Where is the patience? Is it really worth it to stay in a terrible relationship when you're the only one doing any of the work to keep it going? I've witnessed it on so many occasions and it makes me sick to my stomach. How anyone could choose that sort of lifestyle over the opportunity to live alone (happily!)--until they actually find someone worthy of their time--is beyond my comprehension.

Since when did it become okay to act as a pawn in some narcissistic jerk-face's chess game? These pitiful creatures do everything they're told and never disobey what their significant other wants because that could potentially spell trouble for the relationship. And trouble? Well, that just won't work. So the poor little pawns just go about their lives, exhausting themselves to make sure that their master is happy (and secretly hoping that someday, just maybe, he/she will change into what they dream of).

Love isn't supposed to be like that. Love is about sharing your life with someone who actually wants you around because of who you are...not because they think they can order you around and turn you into their own personal slave. And, in addition, you should never be with someone because you think that you have the ability to "help them change".

Just the other day, I was discussing a past "sour relationship" with one of my co-workers. She told me all about this marriage she fell into because she was head-over-heels in love with a guy who treated her like crap. He put her through so much, and my heart absolutely broke for her as she shared her story. I can't remember the exact amount of time that she said they were together, but I know it took years off of her life. It's something that she still looks back on and regrets every single day. And her reasoning for keeping him around as long as she did? "I guess I just thought I could change him into a better man."

I understand the concept. It's admirable, in a way. Wanting to help someone better themselves is a good thing. The problem is this: PEOPLE WILL NOT CHANGE UNLESS THEY WANT TO. If you can't accept that, then misery is really going to love your company. Love and relationships aren't always a piece of cake, but they should never be misery-inducing. It takes two, my darlings. Two people who are willing to give and take.?

Be with someone because you love who they are...and the way that they treat you. Find someone who isn't afraid to admit when they're wrong, but also won't be afraid to call you out when you're being a jack-wagon. Arguments are okay. The important thing is that you go about them in the right way. Be with someone who makes you feel like you can be or do anything---someone who helps build your confidence...not demolish it. Don't be afraid to fall in love, but don't trick yourself into it either. The fear of being alone can manipulate you in ways that you didn't know possible and, as I've said numerous times on this blog, you should NEVER settle for less than you deserve.

If you're in a miserable, one-sided relationship, then you need to take a step back and realize that you deserve better. Lift your chin, take a deep breath, and find the strength to walk away.

If you can figure out a way to do that, then I can guarantee that happiness can (and will) find you.

All my love.

Mt. Hope Family Center provides hands-on experience for UR ...

Courtesy of Mount Hope Family Center

Among the UR student population, one is likely to find a plethora of intended psychology majors. These students work to discover the inner workings of the human psyche and most plan to use what they learn to help those in need of their services.

What most of these students do not know, however, is that within the Rochester community, many individuals are currently dedicating their time to better the lives of those around them through those same psychology techniques and ideas taught in the UR classroom.

Only five minutes from the River Campus resides the Mt. Hope Family Center, a facility that houses many programs for children affected by violence either within their home or around the community. Since its founding in 1979, the center has developed a unique program combining both therapeutic analyses and psychological tests to ensure the betterment of all children and families seeking aid.

The first method employed at the Mt. Hope Family Center is a program that joins both analysis of scientific data and one-on-one training between children and staff members. The second method focuses on the idea of human development. In order to be classified as leading researchers in the field of psychology, the staff must utilize aspects of three cutting-edge fields: social work, medicine, and engineering.

While the Mt. Hope Family Center focuses mainly on human development, neglect, abuse, and maternal depression, a large part of the work done involves training individuals to some day conduct and improve upon the work already being done.

The most recent endeavor of the center is known as Project STEP, a research-based study that focuses on the effects of inter-parental conflict on child development.

?Fifty percent of the population of the city of Rochester is at risk [of facing inter-parental conflicts],? said Kashawmma Wright ?10, a research assistant for Project STEP.

According to Wright and another research assistant for the project, ?ngela Richeson, almost 250 families are involved in the study, meeting three times per year for ?two to three hours sessions. At each session, staff members like Wright and Richeson work the children through a myriad of tasks, including IQ testing, logical assessments, as well as one-on-one interactions, all to get a ?dynamic picture? of the children?s development.

?In families that have many children, often many siblings get overlooked,? Richeson said. ?For this reason, the staff members at the center work with children and their families from the greater Rochester area in the hope of solving any issues that have arisen and to prevent any additional changes from occurring.?

In addition to Project STEP, ?the Mt. Hope Family Center hosts many different projects that include parenting classes for young mothers and sessions for teenage girls coping with depression and anxiety.

Each semester, the center employs 10 student interns from the surrounding area, drawing mainly from UR. While one can apply to become a one-on-one specialist who works directly with children in studies such as Project STEP, there are many other opportunities for students to get involved.

The Mt. Hope Family Center also specializes in after-school and summer programs, focusing on homework strategies, how to deal with one?s emotions, and how to properly develop social interaction skills.

While an undergraduate at UR, Wright assisted in the center?s summer program for three years prior to becoming a research assistant on Project STEP. Like Wright, students interested in the field of psychology, or simply willing to help better the surrounding community, are encouraged to participate in any way they can in the hope of one day continuing such meaningful work on a larger scale. Those looking to make larger commitments can participate in three-semester programs for course credit, while those looking for less of an undertaking are able to set their own volunteer schedules.

Additionally, upperclassmen interested in writing theses or working on psychology studies are encouraged to get involved with the center, as there are many opportunities available for independent study. Once involved, students have access to data from social experiments and tests, as well as both undergraduate and graduate students from neighboring colleges and universities to assist in research.

So, the next time you are asked to read about the practices and tests done by esteemed doctors and researchers in your psychology and biology class, think about how you too could be a part of the next big breakthrough by only traveling five minutes down the road.

You Too Can Win Playing Video Games

A lot of people around the world remember playing video games growing up. Newer generations are enjoying gaming even more, and those games are becoming more advanced every year. Expect this trend to accelerate as the popularity of video games increases.

There are several games available on the web. There are a wide variety of downloadable games available for PCs, consoles, and smartphones. This is very convenient, but it increases the risk of your spending more money. Always think before you buy, especially when it comes to new releases that sell for high prices. Spend some time researching games prior to purchasing them.

Your computer should be clear of memory and up-to-date. Don?t have other applications and programs installed on your gaming computer. Defrag your computer regularly and install a good antivirus program. These programs will keep your computer running at its peak performance.

If you would like to purchase video games, think about signing up for an Internet forum where there are game reviews. You will find great information from these sources. You will find straight forward reviews that can help you determine whether or not to purchase a product. Those are the types of reviews that you surely can believe.

Be careful about overwriting previous game saves with new data. Figure out a schedule for how frequently you switch slots. You eventually may want to be able to go back in the game. If you just keep saving as you go along, you won?t have that option.

Older, classic games are some of the most fun. They can be fun and are pretty inexpensive, also. YOu can find games at deep discount on the internet.

Make sure the gaming console works as soon as you get it home. If you do not play to play online, you still need to check that headsets, memory tools, and ports work correctly. If you discover a problem months after your purchase, such as a broken headphone jack, you won?t be able to exchange the console for a new one.

You don?t need an expensive console to help play video games; any Internet enabled device can help you play games online. There are many games that you can get on the Internet, with similar quality also available in a console option.

Video games were there in the past, they?re here in the present, and they will be there in the future. Video games have come a long way since Atari. It is hard to fathom what the future for video gaming holds. You don?t know what you are going to play next, and it will be something to see.

When to Prepare for Retirement

Tweak. Most Australians spend their working lives thinking about retiring and having high hopes for comfortable and financially stable golden years. For this kind of retirement dream to come true, however, it takes a lot of extensive planning and preparing. The following tips will help you make the right retirement preparations at the right time to ensure that you have the best retirement possible:

1. Take Control of Your Finances Early

The earlier you start taking control of your finances, the better. While you may not be able to make a detailed retirement plan in your 20s, you can start saving the money that will give you more options later on. Have a look at your savings options, make a budget that includes savings, and begin slowly and wisely accumulating assets. Thanks to the magic of compound interest, you will have a lot more money to work with when your preparations get more detailed.

2. Know How to Invest and When

Once you have a bit of money to work with, start exploring your investment options. For instance, in your 20s, you?ll be concerned with investing in short-term and long-term savings and finding ways to supercharge your savings. Later, in your 30s, you may be ready to catch up on lost time by making a more aggressive investment plan, such as using geared share funds or by taking out a margin loan to finance a portfolio of direct share investments.

As you get closer to retirement, however, you?ll want to play it safe with your money, such as by diverting it into your superannuation. Basically, knowing howand whento invest your money is an essential part of preparing for retirement.

3. Make an Adjustable Long-Term Financial Plan

In your 20s, your savings might only be a little here and there as you take on various jobs and try to become more settled in life. It?s once you reach your 30s and are more settled that you can begin making a more detailed financial plan that will change depending on your needs over time. While this still isn?t the time to map out your retirement, you should be starting to acquire assets and gaining momentum with your financial security, while allowing for adjustments as your financial situation evolves.

4. Begin Your Retirement Plans

The real planning for retirement should start when you reach your mid-40s. At this stage, you should have a clear understanding of where you?re at financially and how realistic your goals are. You may want to start addressing questions regarding where you will live in retirement, whether or not you would like to travel, and how much you may need to maintain your lifestyle. At this stage, your preparations will be more about setting goals than making detailed retirement plans, but you?ll have a better idea of how much you might have to retire with.

5. Get Serious About Planning

It is when you?re into your 50s that you should start the serious retirement planning. You?ll start looking at your investments and consider moving them into more stable assets, and preserving capital will become more important than growth. You will also begin looking at what your retirement benefits are and when you?ll become eligible for them, as well asstart thinking about health care and what you?re retirement budget will look like.

If you own a business, your attention might shift from thinking about new online marketing strategies and plans for growth to how you can properly sell your business to get the best value from it.

Milan admits interest in signing Balotelli

Associated Press Sports

updated 4:03 p.m. ET Jan. 19, 2013

MILAN (AP) -AC Milan vice president Adriano Galliani said on Saturday that the club is interested in signing Mario Balotelli but only if Manchester City drops its asking price for the Italy striker.

Balotelli, who is a lifelong Milan fan, has long been linked with a return to Italy, where he progressed through the ranks at Inter Milan before joining City in 2010.

"At the end of Friday Manchester City was still saying ?37 million, we'll see on Monday," Galliani said. "At that price, Balotelli will stay at Manchester City."

Balotelli's agent, Mino Raiola, spent time at Milan's headquarters on Friday.

Galliani is more hopeful of bringing Milan idol Kaka back to San Siro on a loan deal until 2015 and is in talks with the Real Madrid player about reducing his salary.

"At this moment, it's looking good, what's positive is that Real want to let him leave, Milan wants to take him and Kaka wants to come to Milan," Galliani said. "What's negative is that we still have a mountain to climb in contractual terms as Spanish fiscal law is different, otherwise there's no way they could have paid the player what they did.

"If the player comes to play in Italy he would be considered Italian in regards to our fiscal codes and that's the obstacle. If Kaka arrives, he'll come for 2 1/2 years, the loan deal isn't a problem but his wages (are)."

A move to bring Kaka back before the start of the season fell through and Galliani said on Wednesday that Milan could not afford his wages.

However, Kaka later hinted he would be prepared to take a pay cut after a flying visit to the city to have dinner with compatriot and current Milan striker Robinho.

Kaka is still adored at Milan, where he had a golden six-year spell during which he helped it to the Serie A and Champions League titles.

Milan coach Massimiliano Allegri is also keen on signing Kaka but insists there will be no move for another former veteran, David Beckham.

"There are talks in progress for Kaka, an important negotiation process if this great return should occur," Allegri said. "I agree with the club and Adriano Galliani on everything, so there has never been my position opposed to that of the club. There is an exchange of ideas, certainly, but it's not true that I don't want Kaka.

"I know Beckham, he is a great guy and a player of real class. However, you can't wipe out his birth certificate and Milan have chosen to focus on youth hopefully with support from an important champion like Kaka."

Food & Drink | Kitchen Disaster: What happens when six lads try to ...

A group of Hungarian flatmates attempted to make a nice big dinner for themselves, but as the saying goes, the bigger it is the harder it falls - or in this case, fails.

Making a sandwich for yourself can often be a tedious task, let alone making a big dinner to feed six blokes. However, these guys from Hungry, who were obviously feeling very hungry ? sorry, couldn?t resist ? decided to make a pasta dish one night, when disaster struck.

The start of the video gives us a brief tour of the kitchen and we see some of the lads doing their preparation for the dish. Everything looks to be going swimmingly, but when the camera gets turned back on we see that there?s a kitchen disaster afoot.

The lads had put the pot of minced beef and tomato sauce into the cooker, but it fell knocking its contents all over the oven. Sounds like the mother off all clean tasks, right? Well it was, but not before the lads picked out the food that was still ?good?.

If this happened to us, we?d have just closed the cooker, logged online and simply ordered a tasty takeaway from Just-Eat.ie. It certainly beats doing the cleaning.

Mental health treatment centre takes shape - The London Free Press

One of the London area?s largest construction projects is well underway marking a new era in regional health care.

After 10?years of planning, EllisDon Corp. is leading a consortium that is constructing a new mental health care centre for St. Joseph?s Health Care London.

The $830-million project includes a new 156-bed, 456,000-sq.-ft. mental health care treatment centre now being built south of Parkwood Hospital. It will replace the aging Regional Mental Health Care London, formerly London Psychiatric Hospital.

The contract is the biggest EllisDon has taken on in the city since the company was founded in London more than 60 years ago.

The new facilities will usher in much-improved mental health care facilities. Institutional wards and communal washrooms will be replaced by comfortable private rooms with a view of London?s Westminster Ponds.

A new 89-bed forensic facility in St. Thomas will care for patients involved in the criminal justice system.

Skin Care Products: What 'Natural,' 'Hypoallergenic' And 'Unscented ...

By Jenny Bailly

Don?t be fooled by these buzzwords: Four of the most common claims you see on skin care products can be misleading. Dermatologist Leslie Baumann, MD, tells us what these popular terms really mean.

1. 'Unscented'
What you think it means: Free of any fragrances.
What it really means: The product doesn?t have a detectable odor -- but may contain fragrances to mask its natural scent. If you?re trying to avoid fragrance ingredients (which are the most common allergens found in skincare products), ?fragrance-free? is a better label to look for -- although it, too, can be tricky. ?If the primary reason for including a fragrance is not related to scent -- some fragrances, for example, can act as preservatives -- then a product may still be labeled fragrance-free,? says Baumann.
What to look for instead: If possible, test products labeled fragrance-free on your inner wrist and wait a day to see if you have any reaction. You can also scan ingredient lists for the most common fragrances that cause allergies: cinnamic alcohol, cinnamic aldehyde, eugenol, hydroxy-citronellal, geraniol, isoeugenol, and oak moss absolute.

2. 'Natural'
What you think it means: Contains only -- or mostly -- plant and mineral ingredients.
What it really means: Whatever a manufacturer wants. There is no standard for the term ?natural,? so each brand uses it however it wishes. On some labels, ?natural? means that a product contains one or two essential oils (plus a whole lot of high-tech ingredients); on others, ?natural? really does describe a formula without any synthetic ingredients.
What to look for instead: If synthetic-free beauty products are important to you, look for one of several green seals that are regulated by third-party organizations. To earn the USDA?s Organic designation, for example, a beauty product must contain at least 95 percent ingredients that are certified organic (natural and grown without certain pesticides or fertilizers) by the Department of Agriculture?s National Organic Program. (Check out our guide to this and three other seals you might see in the beauty aisle.)

3. 'Firming'
What you think it means:Proven to make skin look more taut.
What it really means: Essentially nothing. ?There is no objective way to measure firming,? says Baumann. ?When a brand says their product has been shown to firm your skin, that claim can only be based on very subjective consumer perception.?
What to look for instead: When your skin feels plump, it also feels -- and looks -- firmer. And the most effective way to plump your skin is with a good moisturizer. Your best bets are creams and lotions with humectants like hyaluronic acid and glycerin. Products that contain sugars will also temporarily smooth and tighten the skin; look for dextrose, sucrose, or other -oses on the ingredients list.

4. 'Hypoallergenic'
What you think it means:Won?t cause an allergic reaction.
What it really means: Often not much. To determine if a product is ?hypoallergenic,? a company should perform patch tests on 100 to 200 subjects and wait several days -- even weeks -- to see how their skin reacts. ?Hypoallergenic? has no official definition, however, and the extent of any testing completed varies widely.
What to look for instead: Because there is not one type of ?sensitive? skin, consider avoiding the specific ingredients that are most likely to cause a reaction in your skin. If you?re acne-prone, for example, stay away from isopropyl myristate and coconut oil. If products often make your skin sting, don?t use anything with lactic acid, glycolic acid, azelaic acid or benzyl alcohol. If you suffer from itchy rashes, look for formulas free of fragrances, cetyl alcohol and parabens. (To find out more about which skin sensitivities you?re prone to, take Baumann?s quiz at skintypesolutions.com.)

Poll: Samsung, Apple seen pulling ahead in smartphone race

HELSINKI (Reuters) - Samsung and Apple pulled ahead in the global smartphone race last quarter, according to forecasts by analysts in a Reuters poll, while Nokia and others are expected to have fallen further behind.

Overall shipments of handsets are expected to have risen in the fourth quarter, with most of that growth dominated by Samsung. Analysts forecast the South Korean company shipped 61 million smart devices, up 71 percent from a year earlier.

Samsung forecast earlier this month that it expected to earn a quarterly profit of $8.3 billion on strong sales of its Galaxy handsets as well as solid demand for flat screens used in mobile devices. Samsung's full results are due by Jan 25.

While some are wary that Samsung's momentum may slow in coming quarters owing to market saturation, it is still expected to outpace Apple as sales of the new iPhone 5 appear slightly weaker than originally forecast.

Apple is forecast to have shipped 46 million iPhones in the quarter, up 25 percent from a year earlier, according to the poll.

Shares in Apple dipped below $500 earlier this week for the first time in almost a year after reports it was slashing orders for screens and other components as intensifying competition eroded demand for the new iPhone.

The poll showed analysts expect Apple's full-year shipments to grow to 167 million this year from 134 million in 2012, while Samsung's shipments are expected to grow to 283 million smartphones in 2013 compared to 210 million in 2012.

NOKIA, RIM AIM TO CATCH UP

Nokia, once the world's biggest handset maker, is expected to have lost more market share. It is now pinning its recovery hopes on Lumia smartphones, which use Microsoft's Windows Phone software.

Analysts forecast Nokia's fourth-quarter shipments of mobile phones fell 15 percent to 80 million units while those of smartphones, including Lumias, fell 65 percent to 7 million units.

Nokia last week said it sold around 4.4 million Lumia handsets in the fourth quarter. Full results are due on Jan 24, and analysts are anxious to hear whether Nokia is confident that Lumia sales will continue to grow in coming quarters.

BlackBerry-maker RIM, another handset maker struggling to claw back market share, is expected to report a 30 percent fall in fourth-quarter shipments to 7 million units, the poll showed.

RIM is to launch new BlackBerry 10 smartphones later this month. The poll showed, however, that analysts expect its full-year sales to fall to around 30 million in 2013 from 33 million in 2012.

Oil rises ahead of US December production report

BANGKOK (AP) ? Oil prices rose slightly ahead of the release of U.S. industrial production data for December that analysts expect will show additional evidence of a gradual economic recovery.

Benchmark oil for February delivery was up 2 cents to $93.30 per barrel at late afternoon Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract dropped 86 cents to finish at $93.28 a barrel in New York on Tuesday.

"A likely strong reading for US industrial production in December will provide more evidence of US recovery, albeit a gradual one," analysts at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said in a market commentary.

Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney, said oil prices were reflecting caution as another heated fiscal debate began brewing in Washington.

"They are up a little, but broadly they are still trading pretty well where they were last week and within that range," Spooner said.

Just weeks after striking a deal to avoid the "fiscal cliff," U.S. lawmakers and President Barack Obama are heading for another showdown over the debt ceiling.

Congress must act to raise the congressionally set $16.4-trillion debt ceiling. If that ceiling is not raised by sometime in February or early March, the government will not be able to pay all its bills.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, rose 13 cents to $109.76 per barrel on the ICE Futures exchange in London.

In other energy futures trading on Nymex:

? Wholesale gasoline fell 0.8 cent to $2.719 a gallon.

? Natural gas fell 4.1 cents to $3.414 per 1,000 cubic feet.

? Heating oil rose 1.2 cents to $3.023 a gallon.

Egypt President Granted Appeal, Retrial

CAIRO -- A Cairo court on Sunday granted Hosni Mubarak's appeal of his life sentence, ordering a retrial of the ousted Egyptian president convicted of failing to prevent the killing of hundreds of protesters during the uprising that toppled his regime.

The ruling read out by judge Ahmed Ali Abdel-Rahman during the brief court session also overturned the conviction of Mubarak's former security chief, Habib el-Adly, who was convicted on the same charges and also sentenced to life in prison. He too will be retried.

Mubarak will not walk free, as he is being held while under investigation on other charges. The defendants were not present in the courtroom. The 84-year-old ex-president, currently in a military hospital, was reported last year to have been close to death, but the current state of his health is unknown.

A small crowd of Mubarak loyalists in the courtroom erupted with applause and cheers after the judge read his ruling. Holding portraits of the former president aloft, they chanted: "Long live Justice." Another jubilant crowd later gathered outside the Nile-side hospital where Mubarak is kept in the Cairo district of Maadi, where they passed out candies to pedestrians and motorists passing by.

Abdel-Rahman did not provide the grounds for his decision to grant the defense's appeal, but the reasoning behind his ruling was expected to be released later. No date has been set for the retrial.

Mubarak's defense lawyers had argued that the former president did not know of the killings or realized the extent of the street protests, but an Egyptian fact-finding mission has recently determined that he watched the uprising against him unfold through a live TV feed at his palace.

The mission's report could hold both political opportunities and dangers for Mubarak's successor, President Mohammed Morsi of the fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood. A new Mubarak trial would be popular, since many Egyptians were angered he was convicted for failing to stop the killings, rather than ordering the crackdown.

But the report also implicates the military and security officials in the protesters' deaths. Any move to prosecute them could spark a backlash from the powerful police and others who still hold positions under Morsi's Islamist government at a time when the nation's new leader is struggling to assert his authority over a nation mired in turmoil.

Abdel-Rahman also granted the prosecution's request to overturn not-guilty verdicts on Mubarak, his two sons and an associate of the former president, Hussein Salem, on corruption charges. Salem was tried in absentia and remains at large to this day.

The judge also ordered the retrial of six of el-Adly's top aides who were acquitted in the same trial. Five of them were found not guilty of involvement in the killing of the protesters, while one was acquitted of "gross negligence." No date was set for their retrial either.

The six top police commanders held key positions at the Interior Ministry, which was led by el-Adly and which is in charge of the security forces. Their acquittal surprised many Egyptians who are still demanding retribution for the nearly 900 protesters killed during the 18-day uprising that culminated with Mubarak's ouster on Feb 11, 2011.

The prosecutors in the Mubarak trial complained that security agencies and the nation's top intelligence organization had not cooperated with their investigation, leaving them with little incriminating evidence against the defendants. During the trial, prosecutors focused their argument on the political responsibility of Mubarak and el-Adly.

Sunday's ruling came one day after a prosecutor placed a new detention order on Mubarak over gifts worth millions of Egyptian pounds he and other regime officials allegedly received from Egypt's top newspaper, Al-Ahram, as a show of loyalty while he was in power.

The public funds prosecutor ordered Mubarak held for 15 days pending the completion of the investigation. Mubarak, 84, was moved to a Cairo military hospital last month after slipping inside a prison bathroom and injuring himself.

Mubarak's sons, one-time heir apparent Gamal and businessman Alaa, are in prison while on being tried for alleged insider trading and using their influence to buy state land at a fraction of its market price.

Global warming has increased monthly heat records worldwide by a factor of five, study finds

Jan. 14, 2013 ? Monthly temperature extremes have become much more frequent, as measurements from around the world indicate. On average, there are now five times as many record-breaking hot months worldwide than could be expected without long-term global warming, shows a study now published in Climatic Change. In parts of Europe, Africa and southern Asia the number of monthly records has increased even by a factor of ten. 80 percent of observed monthly records would not have occurred without human influence on climate, concludes the authors-team of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) and the Complutense University of Madrid.

"The last decade brought unprecedented heat waves; for instance in the US in 2012, in Russia in 2010, in Australia in 2009, and in Europe in 2003," lead-author Dim Coumou says. "Heat extremes are causing many deaths, major forest fires, and harvest losses -- societies and ecosystems are not adapted to ever new record-breaking temperatures." The new study relies on 131 years of monthly temperature data for more than 12,000 grid points around the world, provided by NASA. Comprehensive analysis reveals the increase in records.

The researchers developed a robust statistical model that explains the surge in the number of records to be a consequence of the long-term global warming trend. That surge has been particularly steep over the last 40 years, due to a steep global-warming trend over this period. Superimposed on this long-term rise, the data show the effect of natural variability, with especially high numbers of heat records during years with El Ni?o events. This natural variability, however, does not explain the overall development of record events, found the researchers.

Natural variability does not explain the overall development of record events

If global warming continues, the study projects that the number of new monthly records will be 12 times as high in 30 years as it would be without climate change. "Now this doesn't mean there will be 12 times more hot summers in Europe than today -- it actually is worse," Coumou points out. For the new records set in the 2040s will not just be hot by today's standards. "To count as new records, they actually have to beat heat records set in the 2020s and 2030s, which will already be hotter than anything we have experienced to date," explains Coumou. "And this is just the global average -- in some continental regions, the increase in new records will be even greater."

"Statistics alone cannot tell us what the cause of any single heat wave is, but they show a large and systematic increase in the number of heat records due to global warming," says Stefan Rahmstorf, a co-author of the study and co-chair of PIK's research domain Earth System Analysis. "Today, this increase is already so large that by far most monthly heat records are due to climate change. The science is clear that only a small fraction would have occurred naturally."

49ers vs. Packers: Player reactions on Twitter

The 49ers players had plenty of excited reactions on Twitter following their big win over the Green Bay Packers. We take a look at some of them.

The San Francisco 49ers are an active team on social media, and after games they usually have plenty to say. The last day has been no exception. The 49ers dominated the Packers on Saturday, and 49ers players are feeling good about it. The team is playing with serious confidence, knowing that when they play their best, they can beat anybody. The 49ers need to maintain consistency to do that, of course, but if you had every team playing their best, I'm just not sure anybody can beat this team. It makes the player confidence all the more understandable.

Solar farm land sold for $1M - The Daily News of Newburyport

SALISBURY ? A publicly traded real estate investment trust has purchased the Rabbit Road land housing the True North solar farm for about $1 million.

PW Salisbury Solar, LLC, a nonoperating subsidiary of Power REIT, purchased the 54-acre site from True North, developed by Jim Vaughn of West Newbury, on Dec. 27, according to the deed posted on the Essex County Registry of Deeds? website.

Along with the land, Power REIT bought the buildings and improvements on it, according to the deed.

Power REIT paid $915,000 for the land and assumed another $122,000 for sewer financing, bringing the total price to $1.037 million, according to Ton Konrad, editor at AltEnergyStocks.com and ?Green Stocks? blogger at Forbes.com. Locally, the property is assessed at $715,000, according to town records.

The property was put up for sale this fall, not long after the solar farm began producing electricity. The land was advertised through LandVest requiring a sealed bid by Oct. 12 for a minimum of $1.75 million. The terms stipulated that the solar electric-generating facility was not part of the sale, but would become a tenant on the land.

According to Konrad, True North has a 21-year lease on the property at a rate of $80,800 a year, with a 1 percent escalation rate. The terms of the deal have Power REIT paying the real estate taxes on the property, but not on the solar farm, Konrad said.

Konrad has been following the progress of Power REIT, a small, publicly traded company, which in recent years altered its business plan to focus on acquiring real estate in renewable energy resources, such as solar and wind power. Konrad said Power REIT is the first real estate investment trust to invest in a solar energy site. Prior to its new focus, Power REIT invested primarily in railroad-related real estate, Konrad said.

A real estate investment trust, or REIT, is a business entity that doesn?t pay corporate income tax because it meets specific criteria. Konrad said the trusts must invest in real estate and pass on nearly all their income to their shareholders, who in turn pay tax.

In its Jan. 7 announcement on the Salisbury purchase, Power REIT Vice President Arun Mittal said the solar farm pays the company rent, which is its return on the investment.

Prior to constructing the solar farm, Vaughn struck 20-year power purchase agreements with the town of Salisbury, city of Newburyport and Triton Regional School District in Byfield in return for giving each energy credits that save them money on their electric bills. The returns on those agreements will provide a revenue source to Power REIT, as well as the solar farm.

According to Salisbury Town Manager Neil Harrington, the town began enjoying the savings from its energy credits soon after Vaughn?s facility went online in August. Harrington was unaware of the sale, but has said the language in Salisbury?s agreement with Vaughn would survive through any future owners through the life of the contract.

The sale of the land to Power REIT is another chapter in Vaughn?s journey since 2006, when he began acquiring the acreage beside Vaughn Manufacturing, the Old Elm Street water heater company he once owned and ran, but since has sold.

Back then, the economy was booming and Vaughn had hoped to develop an industrial/commercial park with 20 or more lots. But when the economy collapsed, Vaughn had a $5 million investment in 54 acres, no tenants and no prospects.

?I wish I had a nickel for every client who said they?d build there,? Vaughn said in a 2010 interview. ?I bet I spoke with 100 people. What I learned from that experience is that talk is cheap in real estate.?

Motivated by the need to pay off loans and develop the land, Vaughn realized the property had solar potential: It?s flat has an unobstructed southern exposure and there is a National Gird transmission line at its front door. He sold Vaughn Manufacturing, the company his grandfather founded, and incorporated True North Energy with the goal of making ?renewable energy from the sun,? he said.

It took a lot to turn an approved plan for a business park into a solar farm, such as getting Salisbury Town Meeting to adopt a solar zoning bylaw, obtaining government-driven alternative energy incentives fostered by the Patrick administration and negotiating the power purchase agreements that made the project financially viable ? even before it generated one watt of energy.

Syrian warplanes bomb rebellious Damascus suburbs

(AP) ? Syrian fighter jets on Sunday bombed Damascus suburbs as part of a government offensive to dislodge rebels from strategic areas around the capital, activists said, as clashes raged around army bases and air fields in the country's north.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said warplanes were hitting towns and villages around the capital, including Kfar Batna and Gesereen, while regime forces targeted other neighborhoods with artillery and mortars.

It also said regime troops were battling rebels in the suburb of Daraya a day after government officials claimed the army had taken much of the strategic area, which lies on the edge of a major military air base southwest of the capital. In northern Syria, government forces were fighting rebels over an air base and the international airport of the city of Aleppo, which includes a military base.

Syrian troops have been pushing since November to regain Daraya, which had a population of about 200,000 before the fighting.

Observatory director Rami Abdul-Rahman said government troops now control more than half of the suburb, which has been a stronghold of support for the rebels since the start of the uprising against President Bashar Assad began in March 2011.

Because of its strategic location, rebel control of the Daraya poses a particularly grave threat to the capital.

The suburb is flanked by the key districts of Mazzeh, which is home to the military air base of the same name, and Kfar Sousseh, which holds the government headquarters, the General Security intelligence agency head office and the Interior Ministry. It also is less than 10 kilometers (six miles) from a presidential palace.

While Assad's loyalists appear to have an upper hand in the Damascus front due to the regime's airpower, the rebels dealt the government a major blow in the north by capturing a sprawling air base in Idlib province on Friday.

Rebels retained control of the Taftanaz base Sunday and intensified their assault on the Mannagh air base and the international airport in Aleppo, the country's largest city, activists said.

Among the rebels taking part in the battle are fighters from Jabhat al-Nustra, an Islamist group that the U.S. has branded a terrorist organization. Washington claims the group, which has been among the most organized and effective rebel forces on the ground, is affiliated with al-Qaida.

Syrian official statements regularly play up the role of Islamist extremists in the civil war and refer to the rebels as terrorists.

More than 60,000 people have been killed since the revolt started almost two years ago.

?N Korea told China of plans to conduct third nuclear test?

SEOUL: A North Korean official has apparently told Chinese authorities that the communist state is planning to conduct a third nuclear test in the coming week, a news report said on Saturday.

"We've heard a North Korean official in Beijing told the Chinese side that the North planned to carry out a nuclear test between January 13-20 ," the Joongang Ilbo daily quoted an unidentified Seoul official as saying. South Korean officials have a policy of not commenting on intelligence matters.

"We're now stepping up surveillance over the Punggye-ri nuclear test site," the official said in reference to the North's only nuclear test site, where tests were carried out in 2006 and 2009.

With the UN Security Council still debating possible sanctions against the North following the launch of a long-range rocket last month, there has been widespread speculation that Pyongyang may carry out a third nuclear test.

However, Yang Moo-Jin of the University of North Korean Studies in Seoul said there were "no signs of a nuclear test being imminent" . "Chances are slim that the North might push ahead with a nuclear test in this winter season," Yang said.

(AP) ? America set an off-the-charts heat record in 2012.

A brutal combination of a widespread drought and a mostly absent winter pushed the average annual U.S. temperature last year up to 55.32 degrees Fahrenheit, the government announced Tuesday. That's a full degree warmer than the old record set in 1998.

Breaking temperature records by an entire degree is unprecedented, scientists say. Normally, records are broken by a tenth of a degree or so.

"It was off the chart," said Deke Arndt, head of climate monitoring at the National Climatic Data Center in Asheville, N.C., which calculated the temperature records.

Last year, he said, will go down as "a huge exclamation point at the end of a couple decades of warming."

The data center's figures for the entire world won't come out until next week, but through the first 11 months of 2012, the world was on pace to have its eighth warmest year on record.

Scientists say the U.S. heat is part global warming in action and natural weather variations. The drought that struck almost two-thirds of the nation and a La Nina weather event helped push temperatures higher, along with climate change from man-made greenhouse gas emissions, said Katharine Hayhoe, director of the Climate Science Center at Texas Tech University. She said temperature increases are happening faster than scientists predicted.

"These records do not occur like this in an unchanging climate," said Kevin Trenberth, head of climate analysis at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo. "And they are costing many billions of dollars."

Global warming is caused by the burning of fossil fuels ? coal, oil and natural gas ? which sends heat-trapping gases, such as carbon dioxide, into the air, changing the climate, scientists say.

What's happening with temperatures in the United States is consistent with the long-term pattern of "big heat events that reach into new levels of intensity," Arndt said.

Last year was 3.2 degrees warmer than the average for the entire 20th century. Last July was the hottest month on record. Nineteen states set yearly heat records in 2012, though Alaska was cooler than average.

U.S. temperature records go back to 1895 and the yearly average is based on reports from more than 1,200 weather stations across the Lower 48 states.

Several environmental groups, including the World Wildlife Fund, took the opportunity to call on the Obama Administration to do more to fight climate change.

According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, 2012 also had the second-most weather extremes on record after hurricane-heavy 1998, based on a complex mathematical formula that includes temperature records, drought, downpours, and land-falling hurricanes.

Measured by the number of high-damage events, 2012 ranked second after 2011, with 11 different disasters that caused more than $1 billion in damage, including Superstorm Sandy and the drought, NOAA said.

The drought was the worst since the 1950s and slightly behind the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, meteorologists said. During a drought, the ground is so dry that there's not enough moisture in the soil to evaporate into the atmosphere to cause rainfall, which leads to hotter, drier air. This was fed in the U.S. by La Nina, which is linked to drought.

Scientists say even with global warming, natural and local weather changes mean that temperatures will go up and down over the years. But overall, temperatures are climbing. In the United States, the temperature trend has gone up 1.3 degrees over the last century, according to NOAA data. The last year the U.S. was cooler than the 20th-century average was 1997.

The last time the country had a record cold month was December 1983.

What has scientists so stunned is how far above other hot years 2012 was. Nearly all of the previous 117 years of temperature records were bunched between 51 and 54 degrees, while 2012 was well above 55.

"A picture is emerging of a world with more extreme heat," said Andrew Dessler, a Texas A&M University climate scientist. "Not every year will be hot, but when heat waves do occur, the heat will be more extreme. People need to begin to prepare for that future."
