Key Unlocks Energy Security for New Zealand's North Island

Prime Minister John Key officially opened the largest infrastructure project in New Zealand the week of 12/10, the North Island Grid overhead line upgrade.

The Prime Minister visited Pakuranga substation at the northern-most point of the project, where he met with engineers and managers from the companies involved in its construction.

BBUGL, a joint venture between Balfour Beatty Utility Solutions and UGL Limited which carries out work in Australasia, undertook the construction of a new overhead transmission line as part of the project, in alliance with Transpower, the state-owned company which owns and operates New Zealand?s national grid.

BBUGL began work on the line in 2010, and since then has constructed 186 km of new 400-kV overhead line, including the erection of 432 new transmission towers and installation of over 7,000 tons of conductor. The line includes several ?monopole? towers designed in partnership with the local council to fit with the topography of the area, reducing impact on rural settings. Standing at 65 m, these are the tallest transmission poles anywhere in New Zealand.

The project, which in addition to the new line also includes two new substations and underground cabling, will reinforce the electricity supply in New Zealand?s North Island. The population has more than doubled in this area since the last major work was carried out on the grid in the 1960s, putting increasing strain on infrastructure.

New Zealand Energy and Resources Minister Phil Heatley commented: ?The North Island Grid Upgrade Project has provided greater electricity supply security to the upper North Island and will ensure that as cities and communities grow our electricity infrastructure will be able to meet the increase in demand.?

The project is one of several important infrastructure schemes being undertaken by BBUGL in New Zealand and Australia. Global investment into electricity transmission expected to be worth ?380 billion between 2010 and 2020, as Neil Kirkby, Managing Director of Power Transmission at Balfour Beatty explains:

?There are exciting opportunities in the power transmission and distribution sectors across the globe, particularly in new and emerging markets. Balfour Beatty has a long history of operating in the power sector and our skills and capabilities allow us to deliver complex projects, such as the North Island Grid Upgrade, on a global basis.?

UGL?s Managing Director and CEO, Richard Leupen said:

?We are very pleased to have contributed to the delivery of this significant infrastructure project for New Zealand. The North Island Grid Upgrade demonstrates the depth of UGL?s expertise in delivering major essential infrastructure and our ability to provide innovative solutions to clients in the power sector across Australasia.?

2 Georgia boys found safe in Texas

First it was the start of winter vacation. Then Christmas Eve and Christmas passed, as had Henry Cleary's eighth birthday.

But finally -- after 10 days away from home, with his mother and the rest of their family unaware of where they were most of that time -- Henry and his older brother, Ben, should soon be heading back to Georgia.

The two boys were found Saturday evening in Austin, Texas -- about 950 miles west of their hometown of Roswell, an Atlanta suburb -- Austin Police Lt. James Nisula told CNN.

The brothers are safe. And the man who is suspected of taking them, their father Daniel Cleary, is in police custody, according to Nisula.

He will be charged with interstate interference with custody, a felony, and extradited back to Georgia, according to Roswell Police Lt. James H. McGee.

"I'm ecstatic, I'm in shock," Theresa Nash, soon after hearing the news and getting off the phone with her boys.

Her joy was a far cry from what she was feeling a few hours earlier.

Nash said she didn't know why her estranged husband did not bring the boys home as planned Wednesday from a trip to Tennessee that began December 19. She told CNN affiliate WSB-TV that she had not heard from Daniel Cleary since December 22.

In an emotional plea on CNN Saturday, she asked for the boys to be brought home safely.

"He's trying to take care of them," she said of her estranged husband. "But I think it's a scary situation for everybody at this point."

(AP) ? The end game at hand, the White House and Senate leaders made a final stab at compromise Friday night to prevent middle-class tax increases from taking effect at the turn of the new year and possibly block sweeping spending cuts as well.

"I'm optimistic we may still be able to reach an agreement that can pass both houses in time," President Barack Obama said at the White House after meeting for more than an hour with top lawmakers from both houses.

Surprisingly, after weeks of postelection gridlock, Senate leaders sounded even more bullish.

The Republican leader, Sen. Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, said he was "hopeful and optimistic" of a deal that could be presented to rank-and-file lawmakers as early as Sunday, a little more than 24 hours before the year-end deadline.

Said Majority Leader Harry Reid: "I'm going to do everything I can" to prevent the tax increases and spending cuts that threaten to send the economy into recession. He cautioned, "Whatever we come up with is going to be imperfect."

House Speaker John Boehner, a Republican who has struggled recently with anti-tax rebels inside his own party, said through an aide he would await the results of the talks between the Senate and White House.

Under a timetable sketched by congressional aides, any agreement would first go to the Senate for a vote. The House would then be asked to assent, possibly as late as Jan. 2, the final full day before a new Congress takes office.

Officials said there was a general understanding that any agreement would block scheduled income tax increases for middle class earners while letting rates rise at upper income levels.

Democrats said Obama was sticking to his campaign call for increases above $250,000 in annual income, even though in recent negotiations he said he could accept $400,000.

The two sides also confronted a divide over estate taxes.

Obama favors a higher tax than is currently in effect, but one senior Republican, Sen. Jon Kyl of Arizona, said he's "totally dead set" against it. Speaking of fellow GOP lawmakers, he said they harbor more opposition to an increase in the estate tax than to letting taxes on income and investments rise at upper levels.

Also likely to be included in the negotiations are taxes on dividends and capital gains, both of which are scheduled to rise with the new year. Also the alternative minimum tax, which, if left unchanged, could hit an estimated 28 million households for the first time with an average increase of more than $3,000.

In addition, Obama and Democrats want to prevent the expiration of unemployment benefits for about 2 million long-term jobless men and women, and there is widespread sentiment in both parties to shelter doctors from a 27 percent cut in Medicare fees.

The White House has shown increased concern about a possible doubling of milk prices if a farm bill is not passed in the next few days, although it is not clear whether that issue, too, might be included in the talks.

One Republican who was briefed on the White House meeting said Boehner made it clear he would leave in place spending cuts scheduled to take effect unless alternative savings were included in any compromise to offset them. If he prevails, that would defer politically difficult decisions on curtailing government benefit programs like Medicare until 2013.

Success was far from guaranteed in an atmosphere of political mistrust ? even on a slimmed-down deal that postponed hard decisions about spending cuts into 2013 ? in a Capitol where lawmakers grumbled about the likelihood of spending the new year holiday working.

In a brief appearance in the White House briefing room, Obama referred to "dysfunction in Washington," and said the American public is "not going to have any patience for a politically self-inflicted wound to our economy. Not right now."

If there is no compromise, he said he expects Reid to put legislation on the floor to prevent tax increases on the middle class and extend unemployment benefits ? an implicit challenge to Republicans to dare to vote against what polls show is popular.

The president also booked a highly unusual appearance on Meet the Press for Sunday, yet another indication of his determination to retain the political high ground that came with his re-election.

The guest list for the White House meeting included Reid, McConnell, Boehner and House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.

The same group last met more than a month ago and emerged expressing optimism they could strike a deal that avoided the fiscal cliff. At that point, Boehner had already said he was willing to let tax revenues rise as part of an agreement, and the president and his Democratic allies said they were ready to accept spending cuts.

Since then, though, talks between Obama and Boehner faltered, the speaker struggled to control his rebellious rank and file, and Reid and McConnell sparred almost daily in speeches on the Senate floor. Through it all, Wall Street has paid close attention, and the meeting was still going on at the White House when stocks closed lower for the fifth day in a row.

The core issue is the same as it has been for more than a year, Obama's demand for tax rates to rise on upper incomes while remaining at current levels for most Americans. He made the proposal central to his successful campaign for re-election, when he said incomes above $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for couples should rise to 39.6 percent from the current 35 percent.

Boehner refused for weeks to accept any rate increases, and simultaneously accused Obama of skimping on the spending cuts he would support as part of a balanced deal to reduce deficits, remove the threat of spending cuts and prevent the across-the-board tax cuts.

Last week, the Ohio Republican pivoted and presented a Plan B measure that would have let rates rise on million-dollar earners. That was well above Obama's latest offer, which called for a $400,000 threshold, but more than the speaker's rank and file were willing to accept.

Facing defeat, Boehner scrapped plans for a vote, leaving the economy on track for the cliff that political leaders in both parties had said they could avoid. In the aftermath, Democrats said they doubted any compromise was possible until Boehner has been elected to a second term as speaker when the new Congress convenes on Jan. 3.

Further compounding the year-end maneuvering, there are warnings that the price of milk could virtually double beginning next year.

Congressional officials said that under current law, the federal government is obligated to maintain prices so that fluid milk sells for about $20 per hundredweight. If the law lapses, the Department of Agriculture would be required to maintain a price closer to $36 of $38 per hundredweight, they said. It is unclear when price increases might be felt by consumers.

Business Loans And Interest Rates: Understanding The Basics | The ...

Although financial experts have declared an official end to the recession; the economy is far from out of the woods and as a result; banks are continuing to restrain their loan lending, tighten their requirements and reject a large proportion of loan applications particularly from the small and medium businesses.

As the economy continues to remain trapped in financial struggle; the small and medium business owner is viewed as far too much of a financial risk and as a result, obtaining the ideal and much needed commercial finance lending can be viewed as far too difficult but is all hope actually lost?

Business loans have always been difficult to obtain however, in today?s economy the independent lender and in particular the commercial mortgage broker has shone through to provide the ideal business lending whatever the situation may be.

A commercial mortgage is deemed the most popular form of business lending and can help a new or existing company to procure the ideal commercial property. As a long term financial agreement; a commercial mortgage can last for up to twenty five years and is made available at a fixed rate to enable steady cash flow issues. By providing sufficient personal and business income details, business financial agreements, projections and cash flow documentation a specialist broker will determine your loan credibility and whether such a long term agreement is the best option. If agreed, a commercial mortgage can be the ideal form of business finance, enabling the success of business and what?s more is that, as a form of long term finance interest rates are often relatively low.

For those businesses in need of urgent financial aid whether to assist with a debt issue, cash flow problems or perhaps even to secure a deal or the purchase of a new property; a bridging loan is considered the ideal, short term solution.

As a form of short term lending, a bridging loan can often be secured within a matter of days, exact amounts that can be borrowed under such terms will of course be dependent upon lenders. As a short term agreement, often borrowed between one to twelve months; a bridging loan is considered as high risk and thus the application will be an intense procedure and equity to secure the loan will be required. As such a short term, risky loan the interest rates of a bridging loan will be undoubtedly high.

Despite the continuing loan rejection amongst banks; the commercial mortgage broker is able to assist, whether you have been previously rejected or not, in finding the right business loan for you. As an independent company; brokers are not driven by the hard commission based structure of banks but in fact effectively work for the benefit of a business meaning that, long term success will always be taking into account when determining financial solutions.

The commercial mortgage and bridging loan are just two examples of business finance however, bear in mind that whichever option you select for your business; interest rates will vary depending on the borrowed sum and agreement length. Ensure to discuss all available options and interest rates before you agree to anything or you could find yourself facing risky, fluctuating payments.

Study ties drug shortage to poorer cancer survival | Health ...

Drug Shortage Cancer

This December 2012 photo provided by the Alonzo family shows Abby Alonzo, 13, who has been cancer-free for over two years after her treatment at St. Jude's for Hodgkin lymphoma in 2010.

Katie Alonzo ? AP

Young cancer patients who couldn't get a key medicine because of a national drug shortage were more likely to suffer a relapse than others who were able to get the preferred treatment, doctors report. It's the first evidence that a long-standing drug-supply problem probably has affected cancer treatment results in specific patients.

The study involved more than 200 children and young adults with a blood cancer called Hodgkin lymphoma. Like childhood leukemia, it can be cured nearly 80 percent of the time. But a drug shortage that has worsened since 2009 is threatening that success rate, doctors report in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

Hundreds of drugs, including sedatives, antibiotics, painkillers and cancer treatments, have gone in and out of short supply in recent years. Reasons include manufacturing and contamination problems, plant shutdowns, and fewer makers and lower profits for certain drugs, especially generics infused during surgery or cancer treatment.

Doctors sometimes substitute different drugs for ones in short supply. But proving that the swaps led to poorer results has been tough, especially for cancer patients whose disease and response to treatment vary so much.

"We really couldn't put our finger on, did anybody really suffer?" said Dr. Michael Link, a cancer specialist at Stanford University and past president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology.

The new study, led by Dr. Monika Metzger of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, gives the best evidence so far that patients are suffering.

It focused on mechlorethamine, or nitrogen mustard, a drug that has been in short supply until last month, when more became available. Doctors compared results among 181 Hodgkin lymphoma patients who received the drug to 40 others who were given a different chemotherapy, cyclophosphamide, when the first choice was unavailable.

Only 75 percent of those given the substitute drug stayed free of cancer for two years versus 88 percent who received the preferred treatment.

"We can think of no credible explanation for this dramatic difference" other than the drug substitution, the authors wrote.

No patients died, but those who relapsed were given more aggressive treatments, including stem-cell transplants that have more side effects and can harm fertility.

One of them was Abby Alonzo, of Port St. Lucie, Fla. She was diagnosed with lymphoma three years ago, when she was 10. After eight weeks of treatment with the preferred drug, "she was doing wonderfully," said her mother, Katie Alonzo.

Then doctors said they were out of it.

"I said, what do you mean, we don't have the medication my child needs?" Katie Alonzo said.

After four weeks on the substitute chemo, Abby's cancer had returned and spread to more places, her mother said. The child received high doses of chemotherapy and radiation and now seems cancer-free, although the treatments damaged her lung capacity, leaving her short of breath.

"When your child has cancer you live day by day," and to find out a life-saving medicine isn't available is "very, very frightening," Katie Alonzo said.

Ouya Android Gaming Console Ships Developer Kits Ahead Of ...

Posted: December 27, 2012

The Ouya Android gaming console will begin its launch in earnest now. As previously reported by The Inquisitr, the Ouya developer consoles were projected to release closer to the end of December but some developer console are already shipping.

Those who contributed to the Kickstarter Ouya project early on should expect to have the open-source Android machine in their hands no later than January 10, according to new posts on the official Ouya?forums.?The OUYA Development Kit (ODK) includes?one special dev console and two controllers.?The Ouya Software Development Kit (SDK) is still expected to be released on December 28 which gives game developers plenty of time to familiarize themselves with the Ouya platform before receiving the hardware in the mail.

Like the Amazon Kindle Fire HD the Ouya will not be tied into the normal Google Play store. While, yes, there are tons of games already available all of those games are intended for touchscreens and not a controller. It?s possible that using the OUYA Development Kit (ODK)?that game developers could simulate some of this functionality in order to make porting their game titles easier. A mouse-like cursor could be combined with buttons for ?touching? and ?not touching?. Zooming out via pinching could be another button. But many games also feature dynamic interfaces with buttons all over the screen so those would have to be updated to natively support the Ouya.

The Ouya gaming console will be available to normal gamers for a low price of $99 USD. According to Tech Spot, the Ouya sets records for a Kickstarter project:

?Ouya was one of the most?successful?crowd sourced campaigns of 2012, raising over $8.5 million from more than 63,000 backers. Earlier this month, the firm behind the $100 Android console announced?10 new games?would be coming to the console in time for a planned March release. New titles include Fist of Awesome, MechKnight Chronicles, Syder Arcade, KidElectro, Space Runner, Legend of Dungeon, iMech Online, DustyRevenge, HolyShield! and Starbound.?

Futures Movers: Oil futures edge up on hope for fiscal-cliff deal

By Myra P. Saefong and V. Phani Kumar, MarketWatch

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) ? Crude-oil futures climbed Tuesday to touch a high above $88 a barrel as optimism that U.S. politicians would be able to strike a deal to avert the fiscal cliff and upbeat economic data buoyed prospects for oil demand.

How much to tax the rich?

As the high-stakes showdown over the fiscal cliff continues, Republicans and Democrats continue to debate how much the richest Americans should pay in taxes.

Crude oil for delivery in January /quotes/zigman/2291763 CLF3 +0.97% climbed 85 cents, or 1%, to $88.05 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange, after trading as high as $88.16. Prices, which climbed 47 cents on Monday, haven?t closed above $88 since Dec. 4.

?The growing optimism in relation to a fiscal-cliff resolution is sweeping across broader markets, with energy commodities leading the charge,? said Matt Smith, commodity analyst at Schneider Electric, a Louisville, Ky.-based global specialist in energy management.

?Added optimism is being provided by signs of improvement in the housing industry, while tomorrow?s weekly inventory report is expected to yield a fourth [weekly] draw in five for crude stocks,? he said.

Oil market eyes fiscal-cliff negotiations.

Tuesday?s advance in oil prices came as reports emerged of President Barack Obama and House Speaker John Boehner making progress on a bargain to avert the fiscal cliff ? expenditure cuts and tax hikes that are automatically set to kick in next year. Read about Where Obama and Boehner have backed down.

Boehner on Tuesday floated a back-up plan to raise taxes on incomes of $1 million and above. See: Boehner floats ?Plan B? as cliff deadline nears.

?It?s all about further strengthening in the beleaguered demand situation ? related to optimism that a compromise can be reached in the U.S. and increased optimism with regard to China,? said Matthew Parry, senior oil-market analyst at the International Energy Agency.

He is, however, also ?less optimistic on the global demand situation as a lot of [...] macroeconomic skeletons lurk in the shadows in 2013.?

But ?even if a compromise is reached in the U.S., which I think it will, I?m still not optimistic for substantial growth in U.S. oil demand prospects in 2013,? Parry said.

U.S. economic data was supportive for oil, as was weakness in the U.S. dollar.

A gauge of confidence among home builders rose in December to the highest level since April 2006. See: Home-builder confidence highest since 2006.

Also Tuesday, data showed that the U.S. current-account deficit fell sharply to reach its lowest level in nearly two years. See: U.S. current-account deficit shrinks again.

Meanwhile, the ICE dollar index /quotes/zigman/1652083 DXY -0.38% , which measures the greenback against a basket of six other major currencies, was at 79.312, down from 79.557 in North America late Monday.

Other energy futures traded broadly higher. January gasoline /quotes/zigman/1893822 RBF3 +1.56% ?climbed 5 cents, or 1.7%, to $2.70 a gallon, and January heating oil /quotes/zigman/2101429 HOF3 +1.64% ?added 5 cents, or 1.6%, to $3.00 a gallon.

Natural gas for January delivery /quotes/zigman/2294433 NGF13 +0.83% tacked on 6 cents, or 1.7%, to $3.42 per million British thermal units. It rose 1.3% Monday after a seven-session decline.

Late Tuesday, the American Petroleum Institute will release its data on U.S. petroleum supplies covering the week ended Dec. 7. More closely-watched data from the Energy Information Administration comes out Wednesday morning. Analysts polled by Platts expect a 2.3 million-barrel decline in crude-oil supplies. They forecast a rise of 2 million barrels in gasoline inventories and a climb of 1.5 million barrels in distillate supplies.

Leaping toads reveal muscle-protecting mechanism

Dec. 19, 2012 ? Most people are impressed by how a toad jumps. UC Irvine biologist Emanuel Azizi is more impressed by how one lands.

An assistant professor of ecology & evolutionary biology who specializes in muscle physiology and biomechanics, Azizi found that nature's favorite leapers possess a neuromuscular response that's specific to the intensity of a landing -- a mechanism that protects muscles from injury upon impact.

The research is helping reveal how the nervous system modulates motor control patterns involved with jumping and landing. Azizi's findings on the underlying function of muscle control, he said, could one day improve rehabilitation programs for people with neuromuscular deficiencies.

In all vertebrates -- from toads to humans -- muscles contract to provide jumping power. Landing, however, requires that muscles stretch to dissipate energy and slow the body. But if muscles become overstretched during landing, injury can occur.

For a study appearing online December 19 in Biology Letters, Azizi and UC Irvine graduate student Emily Abbott measured toads' muscular responses to leaps of different lengths. They discovered that during landing, toads' muscles adapt to the varying intensity of impact. As the creatures hop over longer distances, their landing muscles increasingly shorten in anticipation of larger impacts.

This pattern indicates that rapid and coordinated responses of the nervous system can act to protect muscles from injury, said Azizi, who added that future efforts will be aimed at understanding what sensory information is used to modulate these responses.

"Toads are ideal for studying jumping and landing because they're so good at it," he noted. "This work is providing the basic science on how muscles respond during high-impact behaviors like landing or falling."

The research was funded by the National Science Foundation.

Singapore researchers also find that low BMI is stronger risk factor for hip fracture among elderly men compared to women

Speaking at the IOF Regionals Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting, researchers from the National University of Singapore and the Singapore Ministry of Health, announced a study which links carotenoids to decreased hip fracture risk in elderly, lean Chinese men. Elderly who are lean (BMI

In the study, the researchers examined the association between dietary antioxidant carotenoids and hip fracture risk across a range of BMI in elderly Chinese men and women using data from the Singapore Chinese Health Study. This population-based, cohort prospective study recruited 63,257 men and women aged 45 years between 1993. In this group, a total of 1,630 incident hip fractures up to December 2010 were identified via record linkage with the nationwide hospital discharge database.

Importantly, the study found that low BMI is a stronger risk factor for hip fracture risk among elderly men compared to women.

Also, in men, hip fracture risk decreased with increasing intakes of total vegetables and of total carotenoids, particularly ?-carotene. The protective effect was higher in lean men than in men with higher BMI. In contrast, the intake of vegetables or carotenoids had no association with hip fracture risk in women, regardless of levels of BMI.

Cartenoids, which are found many fruits and vegetables (and especially in yellow and orange pigmented vegetables) are converted to vitamin A in the body. The researchers conclude that clinical trials are needed to demonstrate the efficacy of carotenoid supplementation on reduction of hip fracture risk in elderly men. The findings may have important public health implications on hip fracture prevention, particularly among Asians.

Abstracts from the IOF Regionals 3rd Asia-Pacific Osteoporosis Meeting have been published in the scientific journal Osteoporosis International.

Microsoft updates Bing Desktop app for Windows XP and higher

Previously only enjoyed by Windows 7 users, Microsoft has updated its Bing Desktop app to play nice with all modern versions of Windows going all the way back to XP. The OS' latest iteration already packs a slew of Bing-powered applications, but none of them replicate the app's headlining trick: syncing desktop backgrounds with Bing's daily wallpaper. Windows 8 (and XP, Vista and server) users who adopt the 1.1 update can set the app to change their background daily, or manually set it to any background form the past nine days. News aficionados can peek at trending headlines and popular images underneath the search field, which itself can be docked at the top of the screen for easy access. Microsoft has also added French, German, Chinese and Japanese language support to the app. If this piques your interest, go ahead and download it at the source -- that is, if you haven't Google-fied your Start Screen just yet.

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.

I was honored to be included in The Million's Year in Reading 2012. Every year, the online magainze The Millions asks authors to speak to what they've been writing that year. The neat part is you don't have to speak to a book that is brand new or on everyone's minds. Just whatever stood out in your year of munching through the stacks.?

I've spent the last year rereading novels assigned in high school while writing Practical Classics. So I did my little piece on Catcher in the Rye and its look at grieving. A little from it...

Let us ignore that I was that idiot in 10th grade who wore a red earflap hat and trenchcoat for a few weeks because Holden Caufield ?understood me? and move to this: How many siblings does Mr. Caufield have? We all remember younger sister Phoebe and probably older brother DB, the one working as a screenwriter out west. But do you remember Holden?s younger brother Allie, who has died recently when the novel opens? In a pivotal scene ? the one right before he meets Phoebe at the Natural History Museum ? he is wandering Park Avenue, lonesome and heartbroken, and each block reciting ?Please Allie, don?t let me die.?
