Lawmakers race against clock on debt limit (Reuters)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Facing a deadline to avoid a ruinous default, congressional leaders on Saturday braced for a tense weekend of negotiations to try to reach a compromise on a measure to increase in the country's $14.3 trillion debt limit.
Senate Democrats aimed to seize the initiative by pushing their deficit-cutting plan, but entrenched differences remained less than 100 hours before the government says it will no longer be able to borrow to pay its bills.
A sour mood prevailed on Capitol Hill as Senate Democratic leaders accused their Republican counterparts of refusing to talk to them after Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said he wanted to negotiate directly with the White House.
Back-channel talks held out the best hope for a compromise.
President Barack Obama urged lawmakers to strike a deal and avert what he has said would be an "inexcusable" default.
"There are multiple ways to resolve this problem," Obama, a Democrat, said in his weekly address. "Congress must find common ground on a plan that can get support from both parties in the House. And it's got to be a plan that I can sign by Tuesday."
The debt saga shifted to the Senate late on Friday after the Republican-controlled House of Representatives passed a deficit-cutting bill, breaking weeks of political inertia.
The Democratic-controlled Senate quickly killed that bill, as expected, but its earlier approval by the House lifted hopes that it could form part of a final compromise.
With the hope of picking up Republican votes, Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid modified his plan, taking elements of an earlier proposal put forth by McConnell.
But he declined McConnell's offer to vote on it immediately -- a sign that Reid does not yet have enough support.
The Senate now is expected to hold that vote early on Sunday morning, setting up final passage on Monday morning, shortly before U.S. financial markets open.
Unless Congress raises the debt ceiling, the government would be barred from further borrowing after Tuesday, according to the Treasury, and could quickly run out of money to pay all its bills.
"The country's in crisis. This is not a time for politics as usual," Senator Charles Schumer, a Democrat, told a news conference.
CRUCIAL WEEKEND
McConnell wants to make sure the White House is involved to assure that any final package will make it past Obama's desk, Republican aides said.
Vice President Joe Biden, who has a rapport with McConnell from his years in the Senate, could emerge as a key player in the weekend talks.
"We are headed for a debt ceiling extension," said David Kotok, chairman and chief investment officer at Cumberland Advisors in Sarasota, Florida. "The risk is that some accident causes actual default. It's not likely but possible."
Investors and foreign governments are likely to remain on edge, though, as procedural hurdles will make it hard for Congress to send a deal to Obama until Monday night.
Reid's revised proposal, which would cut $2.2 trillion over 10 years, incorporates parts of a "backup plan" first proposed by McConnell. The new version would essentially give Obama the authority to raise the debt ceiling in three stages to cover U.S. borrowing needs through the 2012 elections when he is running for a second term.
Obama and his Democrats had hoped to avoid multiple votes before the election.
The world has watched in growing alarm as political gridlock in Washington has brought the world's largest economy close to an unprecedented national default, threatening to plunge world markets and economies into turmoil.
U.S. stocks endured their worst week in a year as the uncertainty made investors shy away from riskier assets and the dollar slumped to a record low against the safe-haven Swiss franc. Much worse could be in store if a debt deal doesn't appear to be on track by the time markets open on Monday.
A late deal also raises the prospect of the United States losing its top-notch AAA credit rating, which could rattle markets and raise borrowing costs for Americans struggling with unemployment above 9 percent.
Obama has rejected suggestions that he could invoke emergency measures to unilaterally raise the debt ceiling in the event the parties fail to bridge their sharp ideological differences over taxes and spending.
With a final deal still in doubt, the government has begun to prepare Wall Street banks for the possible consequences of a default. One of the first casualties could be a planned quarterly sale of $42 billion in new Treasury bonds that might have to be delayed or canceled.
Some U.S. companies and private equity firms are also hitting the pause button on deals, fearing that a failure to reach a deal could raise financing costs.
"It's definitely having a chilling impact on people's ability to get deals done right now," said one top investment banker who declined to be identified.

Total says weak US dollar dents Q2 profits (AP)
PARIS ? French oil company Total SA said Friday that the weakening U.S. dollar hit its second-quarter profits but that successful exploration in Bolivia and Angola would help to underpin future growth.
France's largest company by market value said in a statement that it made a net profit of euro2.73 billion ($3.89 billion) in the second quarter, down 12 percent from euro3.1 billion from the same quarter last year.
Europe's third largest oil company behind Royal Dutch Shell and BP said its closely watched adjusted profit expressed in dollars to aid industry comparisons was up 7 percent to $4 billion in the second quarter, compared to $3.76 billion a year earlier.
Oil giants including Exxon Mobil and Royal Dutch Shell also reported higher second quarter earnings this week.
In the April-June period, Exxon's profits jumped 41 percent to $10.7 billion, the biggest since Exxon hit a corporate earnings record of $14.8 billion in the third quarter of 2008. Shell's net income nearly doubled to $8.7 billion and BP earned $5.6 billion compared with a loss of $17.2 billion last year.
Total said its production slipped 2 percent in the second quarter to 2.31 million barrels a day from 2.36 million a year earlier. Scheduled maintenance shutdowns and disruptions from the war in Libya caused much of the decline.
The French company has pledged to invest $20 billion this year, mainly to seek out new development projects in oil, gas and renewable energy.
The company recently took control of U.S.-based solar panel maker SunPower Corp., in a deal that values the San Jose, California, company at $2.3 billion.
Total said it expects the first results of several "high-potential exploration wells" in the second half, and said it is also pursuing development in new producing areas in Australia and Russia. It said the startup of a deep offshore well in Angola in the fourth quarter "is expected to contribute substantially" to the company's near term production growth.

There are many ways to create foods that are both delicious and flavorful for a vegan diet. An individual who is cooking for a vegan will want to find out before starting whether the person is a strict vegan. When cooking for a strict vegan, you will want to substitute ingredients in recipes that meet the needs of the vegan, but which will also be tasty to the non-vegans who may eat the food. With most of the recipes, where plant substitutes are used for protein and other ingredients, you will want to use more spice than would be used normally. Most of the ingredients used for cooking vegan foods do not have the level of taste that is in other foods. Many will absorb the flavor of the food being made.
There are many alternatives for sugar and honey that can be used when baking or cooking. The most healthy substitute is natural maple syrup. When you are using a syrup instead of a dry sweetener, be sure to reduce the amount of liquid you use in your recipe to accommodate the liquid of the syrup.
Other syrups that will provide sweetness for recipes include Agave, Golden, and Date syrup. Getting the syrups from a resource that has organic products will assure that no animal products were used when it was being made. Different types of syrups also add a different flavor to hot drinks, such as tea. Finding the perfect, relaxing combination of sweetener for tea is often a wonderful experience.
Substitutes behave differently when they are used for baking or stovetop cooking. You will want to be sure and check on the substitute ingredient you are using to assure it is the best product for the recipe you are cooking. When baking, Soy or Almond milk is an excellent substitute for milk. These milks have more fat than other types of milk substitute and interact with other ingredients well during baking. Rice milk is excellent when used for stovetop recipes.
Rice milk does not burn easily and when you want to make gravy, using this milk with cornstarch will blend very well. When you want a creamy, sweet milk that is very easy to whip or use for cream, Coconut milk is an excellent choice. When using this milk you will want to cut the sweetener you use as it is very sweet when used as whipping cream.
Ricotta cheese is always a favorite for pasta and other recipes. Using mashed or silken tofu that is blended with a little lemon juice will give you the Ricotta cheese flavor that will make the dish complete. Using lemon juice for zest will brighten up many of the recipes that are being translated into a vegan diet.

Latest developments in debt ceiling standoff (AP)
Congress has until Aug. 2 to raise the federal borrowing limit or the government will run out of money and possibly default on its debt. House Republicans say they won't raise the debt limit without equal spending cuts. President Barack Obama and Democrats have insisted that higher revenues must be included.
Thursday's developments: House Republican leaders abruptly put off a vote on a bill extending the government's debt limit and cutting federal spending as they struggled to find enough votes to pass it.
Markets react: Stocks fell late in the day as the GOP leadership team tried to round up support on the bill to avoid debt default. The market was up for much of the day but started to sink in the last half-hour of trading and the Dow lost 62 points for the day.
What's next: With time running out, Democrats and Republicans face increasing pressure to find a solution that can get bipartisan support. Both sides have hinted they are open to a compromise that could end the crisis before it spiraled out of control.

Q: What is the debt ceiling?
A: It's a legal limit on how much debt the government can accumulate. The government takes on debt two ways: It borrows money from investors by issuing Treasury bonds, and it borrows from itself, mostly from the Social Security trust fund, which comes from payroll taxes. Congress created the debt limit in 1917. It's unique to the United States. Most countries let their debts rise automatically when government spending outpaces tax revenue. Congress has increased the debt limit 10 times since 2001.
Q: What is the federal deficit, and how does it differ from the debt?
A: The deficit is how much government spending exceeds tax revenue during a year. Last year, the deficit was $1.29 trillion. The debt is the sum of deficits past and present. Right now, the national debt totals $14.3 trillion ? a ceiling set in 2010.
Q: Why is the prospect of not raising the debt ceiling so worrisome?
A: The government now borrows more than 40 cents of each dollar it spends. If the debt ceiling does not rise, the government would need to choose what to pay and what not, including benefits like Social Security, wages for the military or other bills. It also might delay interest payments on Treasury bonds. Any default could lead to financial panic weakening the country's credit rating, the dollar and the already hobbled economy. Q: Who holds the $14.3 trillion in outstanding U.S. debt?
A: The U.S. government owes itself $4.6 trillion, mostly borrowed from Social Security revenues. The remaining $9.7 trillion is owed to investors in Treasury securities ? banks, pension funds, individual investors, state and local governments and foreign investors and governments. Nearly half of that ? $4.5 trillion ? is held by foreigners including China with $1.15 trillion and Japan with $907 billion.
Q: How did the debt grow from $5.8 trillion in 2001 to its current $14.3 trillion?
A: The biggest contributors to the nearly $9 trillion increase over a decade were:
_2001 and 2003 tax cuts under President George W. Bush: $1.6 trillion.
_Additional interest costs: $1.4 trillion.
_Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan: $1.3 trillion.
_Economic stimulus package under Obama: $800 billion.
_2010 tax cuts, a compromise by Obama and Republicans that extended jobless benefits and cut payroll taxes: $400 billion.

_Hundreds of billions less in revenue than expected since the Great Recession began in December 2007.

Dolphins trade for RB Bush - Fantasy Sports
The Dolphins have acquired RB Reggie Bush from the Saints. Bush will sign a two-year deal with Miami.
FOX Sports' Jay Glazer first reported the trade early Thursday morning. ESPN's Adam Schefter confirmed that Bush agreed to a two-year contract to finish the deal. The contract is worth $9.75 million, paying him $5 million in 2011, Pro Football Talk reported.
The Saints selected RB Mark Ingram in the first round of April's draft, and Bush was due to be paid $11.8 million in 2011. New Orleans also has RBs Pierre Thomas and Chris Ivory.
The Dolphins are not expected to re-sign Ronnie Brown or Ricky Williams. They were reportedly in talks with Giants RB Ahmad Bradshaw.
Bush played in just eight games last season because of injury, finishing with 150 yards rushing and 208 yards receiving.
The way we see it
The Dolphins could still bring in a veteran back, as Bush is not a No. 1 running back. He will likely make most of his contributions with his skills as a receiver and a returner. Rookie Daniel Thomas appears to still be the No. 1 back, but a lot can happen. Adding Bush does improve the Dolphins' offense, their top priority this offseason.

Teller did not respond to a request for comment following the GOP Conference meeting.
In a brief interview with POLITICO Wednesday, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said he?s ?an RSC member and I don?t like to see Republicans attacking other Republicans.?
A steady stream of Republicans stood up at the meeting to heap abuse on Teller and the RSC. House Republicans were particularly peeved that that the RSC was targeting some of its own dues-paying members.
Rep. Greg Walden (R-Ore.), a member of leadership and one of those targeted in an RSC e-mail, stood up, read the message aloud and demanded Teller explain himself.
?If we keep this from ever coming to the floor, we have a greater chance of victory than defeating on a vote on the floor.? Goodman ended his email saying: ?Here are the people we need to reach today who are undecided or only leaning one way right now,? according to the e-mail, which was obtained by POLITICO.
Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-N.C.), an RSC member and one of those on the RSC ?target list,? said that leadership has given the RSC ?everything that we have asked for.? Ellmers said she may quit the group.
?Yet when it comes time for a little bit of compromise on the RSC?s part, they?re not willing to compromise. And that?s just not the way to go about this,? Ellmers said
Ellmers said there ?seems to be a little bit more than a connection? between the RSC and outside conservative groups.
The RSC controversy comes as Boehner and the GOP leadership are twisting arms to get their members in line behind the debt package, which is supposed to come to the House floor on Thursday.
Jordan and other conservatives are opposed to the measure, saying it does not go far enough in cutting government spending. The Congressional Budget Office ruled on Tuesday that the Boehner plan falls $150 billion short of the $1 trillion goal set by Boehner, forcing House leaders to delay the vote by a day to revise the bill.
The CBO announcement worried some conservatives, who don?t believe Boehner and the leadership have gone far enough in proposing spending cuts.
Yet the RSC fight was the focus of many members? attention on Wednesday morning. ?There are a lot of members really ticked off at this,? said a GOP lawmaker, speaking on the condition of anonymity.

Staging Houses Speeds Sales | The Lincoln Tribune
The first impression is often the most important one when it comes to buying a new home. That's where a professional home stager comes in. These design professionals can transform a house into a dream home designed to captivate potential home buyers as soon as they see it.
Home stager Gloria Crowley says staging is a growing trend in the U.S. real estate market.
She carefully chooses which pieces of furniture and household accessories to take from her warehouse outside Washington, D.C., to a moving truck for today's job.
?We select things for the house that we think will have the house show best," says Crowley. "And then we take some extra things in case they don?t work the way we thought they would work.?
Her job is to make the house look appealing, so potential buyers get that good first impression.
?About 15 years ago, I was a real estate agent and I staged my own listings, and it turned out that they sold faster and for more money," she says. "And so, eventually, other agents asked me to stage their properties and now I do mostly staging.?
Today's job is at a vacant house in Washington, D.C., which is up for sale for $890,000. For a $6,000 fee, Crowley and her team give it a makeover.
"Decisions are constantly evolving and changing because what we think might be a good solution ends up switching once we get more things in the room, so it is a constant process,? says Jania Helm, an interior designer who used to decorate homes to reflect her clients? tastes.
When she began working with Crowley three years ago, staging a house required the opposite approach.

"Staging involves taking a look at the home and deciding how to best appoint it so that it shows and appeals to the broadest audience.?
There are no statistics, but Crowley says home staging has become more common in recent years as the real estate market has become more competitive. She says she is busier than ever.
"If there are 10 houses on the block and nine of them don't show well and one does, the one that does is the one that is going to sell.?
Some houses don?t need a lot of staging, others require a total renovation. The fees for home staging can range from a few thousand dollars to tens of thousands depending on how much work is needed.
Real estate agent Evelyn Mattar believes it?s worth it to the seller.
?I can say it does make an empty house sell quicker," says Mattar. "And therefore you have to consider how long the sellers are carrying it on the market if they owe things, if they owe money on a mortgage.?

According to Mattar, a 26-year industry veteran, staging has become even more critical as realtors increasingly use online virtual tours to show off their properties.
"If you get online and see a virtual tour of an empty house, it doesn?t really give you the proportions and how you are going to live in the house," she says. "And if the house does not show well, people aren?t interested in going to see it.?
Once the staging is complete on Crowley's latest project - the Washington, D.C. property - the vacant house has been transformed into a showcase.

Stamps mark one-year countdown to London Olympics (AFP)
LONDON (AFP) ? A set of 10 stamps marking the one-year countdown to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games was unveiled by Britain's Royal Mail on Friday.
The batch of 10 first-class stamps, entitled "Get ready for 2012", will go on sale on July 27, exactly 12 months before the Olympics start.
They feature depictions of classic Olympic sports such as field athletics and gymnastics as well as more recent additions to the Olympic and Paralympic Games, including triathlon, handball and wheelchair rugby.
The stamps are the third and final set to be issued during a three-year Games countdown, with the total of 30 representing the largest Royal Mail commission since the Millennium series in 1999 and 2000.
Jeanette Kwakye, a Team GB 100-metre sprinter, said they were "beautifully designed".
"All three sets provide a fitting tribute to the Olympic and Paralympic Games," she said.
Stephen Agar, director of regulated business at Royal Mail, said the stamps were a celebration "of what is set to be a great event in UK sporting history".
The creation of 30 stamps marks the fact that 2012 will be the start of the 30th Olympiad.
It also represents every one of the 29 sports in both the Olympic and Paralympic Games, with the exception of athletics, which will be featured across two stamps as "Athletics: track" and "Athletics: field".
The designs are by 30 different artists, and will all feature either the 2012 Olympic Games or Paralympic Games logo.

Alphabet Soup? Nope, Those are Real Estate Agent Designations!
What do the letters behind a real estate agent?s name stand for? Real estate agents, like doctors, lawyers, and other professionals can ear designations, certifications, and other credentials. These are usually shown by putting a series of initials after the agent?s name. The most common designations and certifications are: Broker, REALTOR, e-Pro, CHMS, GRI, ABR, and CRS.
What does an agent have to do to obtain the designation or certification?
e-Pro requires an agent take a class on basic computer skills. It has no real estate content, but ensures your agent can use email and the web. It should really be a bare minimum bar for the technology aptitude of your agent.
REALTOR is the one of the easier credentials to obtain (but one of the hardest to live up to). A REALTOR is a real estate agent that belongs to the National Association of REALTORS and agrees to follow the Realtor Code of Ethics. Broker is a bit harder to obtain than REALTOR. In Texas, for example, a broker license is required to be able to operate your own real estate company. An agent must have their license for 2 years and complete over 600 hours of real estate education prior to applying for a broker?s license. The broker?s license is granted upon completion of an exam administered by the state. Brokers are basically real estate agents with advanced educations.
GRI stands for Graduate Realtor Institute. Less than 50% of agents have this designation. The GRI requires 12 days of continuing education with passing grades on three exams. There are no production or time requirements so an agent can literally earn this designation by sitting in class for 12 days and passing the tests. This designation is in no way a measure of real estate sales experience.
ABR stands for Accredited Buyer?s Representative. Less than 30% of agents have this designation. This designation combines 2 days of classroom work and an exam with the requirement that the agent show proof of at least five buyer sales. This designation shows that the agent has had both formal classroom time and in the field experience.
CRS stands for Certified Residential Specialist. Less than 4% of all agents have this designation. This is the most difficult designation to obtain and is a measure of a high degree of formal education and real world transactional experience. To obtain a CRS, the agent must attend three 2-day classes, pass three exams, and provide proof of 25 closed transactions within the last 24 months. While the transaction experience isn?t a huge amount, it does weed out the inexperienced agents and the classes weed out those agents who aren?t dedicated to continuing education.
Other designations are out there, but for the most part they are issued by inconsequential groups and have no real bearing on the agent?s abilities and are used more for marketing purposes than anything else.

China's most wanted fugitive arrested after extradition (Reuters)
BEIJING (Reuters) ? China arrested its most wanted fugitive in the capital Beijing Saturday after Canada deported him to end a decades-long saga that had plagued Sino-Canadian relations, but concerns remained among activists about whether he would receive a fair trial.
Beijing has sought the deportation of Lai Changxing, 53, accusing him of running a multibillion-dollar smuggling operation in the southeastern city of Xiamen in the 1990s in one of China's biggest political scandals in decades.
Lai arrived at Beijing's international airport, where Chinese police "announced his arrest and read him his rights, including hiring lawyers to defend himself, after he was transferred by the Canadian side," state news agency Xinhua reported, citing the ministry of public security.
Lai may face life imprisonment, Xinhua cited Chinese legal experts as saying Friday. Other legal experts and human rights activists said it was unlikely Lai could receive a fair trial in China.
Lai had been put on a plane from Canada Friday, after a court cleared the way Thursday for his extradition, dismissing concerns that he could be tortured or executed back home.
"Lai's repatriation once again shows that no matter where a criminal suspect flees, he or she cannot evade legal sanctions in the end," Xinhua quoted the ministry as saying.
State television showed Lai, dressed in a grey polo T-shirt and wearing thick-framed black glasses, looking dispirited and nodding as police read out his rights. After he was made to sign his warrant, he was escorted into a SWAT vehicle.
Lai's deportation was decided just after Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird's visit to Beijing, which laid the groundwork for an upcoming trip by Prime Minister Stephen Harper to China. Harper made waves in 2006 when he said that he would not sell out human rights in China "for the almighty dollar."
"EXTRAORDINARY ASSURANCES"
Lai fled to Canada with his family in 1999 and claimed refugee status, saying the allegations against him were politically motivated.
China had promised Canada that Lai would not be tortured or executed and that Canadian officials would have access to him.
"I do hope that China can set a good record in such an unprecedented event," rights lawyer Shang Baojun told Reuters. "The Canadians gave China a lot of face this time and I think China should reciprocate."
But he added: "China's judiciary is not perfectly transparent, and I can't say anything for sure."
Canada has no death penalty and will not usually extradite anyone to a state where capital punishment is practiced without assurances the suspect will not be executed.
The case exploded in the special economic zone of Xiamen in Fujian province in the mid-1990s when Jia Qinglin, now the ruling Communist Party's fourth most senior leader, was the province's Party boss.
Beijing has accused Lai's business empire, the Yuanhua Group, of bribing officials to allow a massive smuggling ring in a scandal that implicated more than 200 senior figures, including Jia's wife, Lin Youfang. She denied any wrongdoing.
Lai admitted in a 2009 interview with Toronto's Globe and Mail newspaper that he had avoided taxes by exploiting loopholes in the law, but he denies bribery charges. He said that had he not been in Canada he would have been executed.
China put more than 300 suspects on trial and sentenced 14 to death, including provincial officials and a former vice minister of public security, in a case Beijing has used for a propaganda campaign against corruption.
Police statistics in 2010 showed that there were nearly 600 Chinese suspects at large overseas, who are wanted for economic crimes, mostly corruption, Xinhua said.
Many Chinese applauded the return of Lai.
"I think he should have been extradited ages ago," said 29-year-old Yang Wen. "Many of his crimes were committed in China so if he's going to be tried, it should happen in China."
Some favored the death penalty for Lai.
"Ultimately, a lot of people were hurt because of him, so I think that kind of punishment is necessary," said a female property developer who gave her name as Yang.

Summer Grilling Do's and Don'ts | Honest Cooking
A summer barbecue can easily turn into a summer disaster if proper precautions aren?t taken to ensure food safety.

A roaring fire, the company of good friends, refreshing cocktails, savory foods, all this is the litle piece of heaven that we yearn for before the sun sets and can be easily labeled with one word, barbecue! ?One would not think twice to crash a barbeque if at all possible!
But, in all seriousness, a barbeque is considered one momentous highlight of?the all the summer?s social events. On the flipside, a summer barbecue can easily turn into a summer disaster, if proper precautions aren?t taken to ensure food safety. The result can be a quick run to the nearest hospital, when the driver will find himself ?packing two beers, a few burgers, and/or an expensive piece of filet mignon in the back seat of the car for the ride and wait in the ER for his suffering patient.
It is estimated that there are between 48 million illnesses and 3,000 deaths each year in the United States alone, many of which could have been avoided if people took proper care while preparing and consuming food outdoors in the hot weather. The good news is that it doesn?t take a lot of effort to guard against food-borne illnesses. You can still drink your brew and hang with your friends while making sure that the detailing of your car will not be part of your barbecue cost. Here are some simple tips you can use this summer to make sure your barbecue snacks/picnics are both safe and delicious.
The most important tip would be: wash your hands, and thoroughly I should add. If you happen to be out camping or barbecuing at a picnic, and there is no water supply make sure to bring your own source of clean water. If lugging around extra water for this reason is a hassle for you, no worries, bring baby wipes or sterile wipes.
Carefully stock your cooler, or refrigerator, because the way you stock your cooler/refrigerator?is very important. You definitely want your raw meats to be wrapped well and placed at the very bottom of the cooler or refrigerator, and AWAY from other food. This ensures that if any of the meat starts to drip, the drippings won?t land on other edible items, thus avoiding cross contamination of any sort.
Place the cooler in the coldest, shadiest part of the passenger area of your car. DO NOT keep it in the trunk. You might not know this but the trunk is generally the hottest part of a vehicle. When you arrive at the picnic site, place the cooler under a shady tree or somewhere else out of direct sunlight.
Cook meat thoroughly. Most of us don?t like a dry burger or steak, and would rather have a nice mooing piece of meat. Then again, there is mooing and there is mooooooing. If you are not to sure what mooooooing is, use a digital instant-read thermometer to test your meat. Here are the temperatures you are looking for to ensure that no one runs the 50 yard dash to the nearest secluded area: 160?F for beef; 185?F for poultry; 145?F for fish.
Avoid cross-contamination. Although using the same plate that the raw meat was in is tempting, especially if that means less plates for you to wash, NEVER place cooked meat on a surface that previously held raw meat. Use two sets of tongs ? one to turn raw meat on the grill, the other to transport it to your plate once it?s been cooked.
Cover your food as much as possible. Insects bring all sorts of contamination to your food. Bacteria from garbage, road kill bacteria, yes-even manure and dog droppings land on your food from insects.
On a warm summer?s day, perishable food left unrefrigerated or chilled in your cooler will?be unsafe to eat after only one hour. So, if you are craving to have left overs at work tomorrow, place any leftovers in an ice-filled cooler.
Follow these few tips and make your barbecue events the epitome of your friend?s summer. Besides, what?s better then a fun relaxing barbecue, sipping on brews, and showing off your barbecue and food safety skills, maybe chocolate? But, we will leave that for the winter.

Short-Term Versus Long-Term Foster Care
There are many different types of foster care arrangements. Some people prefer to provide short-term care, while others are in it for the long haul. Before they complete an application, adults who are considering fostering should determine which of these arrangements is more suitable. Making the right decision ensures the living situation will be pleasant for everyone.
Short-term care occurs when biological parents experience emergency or special needs. One example is when a parent loses custody during an improper care investigation but the expectation is that the child will return home within one week to several months. During short-term care, the child usually has regular contact with family members.
A short-term caregiving arrangement may also be entered when the biological parent has a medical emergency and has no one to care for the child. In the past, extended family often automatically took in children in these situations but things are not as socially stable today. When the child reaches age 18, the foster care subsidy stops but the child may continue to live in the home. Kinship applications for long-term fostering have become more popular, where relatives want to care for the child but require financial assistance.

Obama open to short-term debt fix if big deal agreed (Reuters)
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - (Reuters) ? The White House signaled on Wednesday it could support a short-term increase in the U.S. borrowing limit for "a few days" if lawmakers agreed to a broad deficit reduction deal but needed more time to pass it.
The move, a shift from President Barack Obama's previous position, reflects the growing political reality that time is short for Congress to pass a massive deficit-cutting deal before the United States runs out of money on August 2.
A new proposal for long-term deficit reduction from a group of senators known as the Gang of Six has revived hope that a broad agreement on spending cuts can be reached to avoid a looming default and alleviate pressure on America's triple-A credit rating.
Obama had repeatedly opposed a short-term extension of the $14.3 trillion (8.8 trillion pound) debt limit as a solution to the dilemma, and the White House reiterated that stance on Wednesday -- but with a caveat.
White House spokesman Jay Carney said in a written statement that the president would consider supporting a short-term fix if a deal had been reached "and we needed a very short-term extension (like a few days) to allow a bit of extra time for a bill to work its way through the legislative process."
The United States will run out of money to pay its bills if Congress does not increase the debt limit by August 2. Failure to act could plunge the United States back into recession and send shockwaves through global financial markets.

Google+: Learn the easiest way to move photos from Facebook
Making a full transition from Facebook to Google+ is not easy. There are Chrome extensions developed for publishing news feed items on both sites (along with Twitter) simultaneously, but there are a few other major features that are cumbersome to move. The largest obstacle is likely to be photos.
However, I found that it can be done without much effort.
Now, determining the easiest way is rather subjective. There are several other tips floating around, including this one from ZDNet Australia (via CNET), which involves downloading all of one?s content from his/her respective profile.
I tried that approach, and it failed repeatedly. Either I received an email from Facebook saying it wasn?t possible due to some technical error or I received an email that my info was ready to download, but when I clicked on the link, it didn?t work.
And when you think about it, if you have to download all of your photos to your computer again, why not just upload whatever you have saved on your hard drive, cloud space or whatever? Of course, that would take forever as well.
Then I found a tip on Lifehacker about a free Chrome add-on called ?Move Your Photos.? I figured I?d give it a shot. (Don?t forget you?ll need the Google Chrome browser to make use of this extension.)
Once I clicked on the Move Your Photos icon next to the URL address bar in Chrome, I was prompted to enter my Facebook log-in info. From there, it took me to a very basic looking page with every Facebook album I?ve ever published (and not deleted) divided up with thumbnails.
With this method, this next part is actually the step that involves the most work. If you want to transfer absolutely everything to Google+, you can just head to the bottom of the page and hit Upload. That?s simple enough.
But if you want to pick and choose albums, and even photos within those albums, you?ll need to scroll down the page and click on photos and albums you don?t want uploaded. The default option is to just transfer everything.
If you have thousands of photos (I had over 8,000), this could take about 10 minutes, depending how selective you are.
Now here comes the most time-consuming part, but it?s really not that painful. There is a flaw with Move Your Photos. Picasa offers 1GB of free storage space, which equates to a lot of photos - especially ones from Facebook in which the resolution has been stepped down.? But the extension repeatedly stopped and informed me with an error message that my limit had filled, which was definitely not true.
Fortunately, there is a simple way around this. All I had to do was click OK on the error message and then hit Upload again at the bottom of the page. I had to do this several times, sometimes every 20 minutes or so. So if you have many photos like me, you might want to do this when you have to sit close to the computer for a long period of time. This could also take up to several hours, but there is a ?Pause and Save? option. (I said this would be easier, not quicker.)
But do NOT log out of the add-on?s site. If you do, you?ll have to go through the whole selecting and clicking-on-photos process again. But if you refresh the page and stay logged in, you should be fine.
Note, however, that using this method with the Move Your Photos add-on does not transfer any face tagging, comments or descriptions attached to photos and albums. You?ll have to go back and do that yourself if you?re really set on it.
Nevertheless, this was the most painless way I?ve found to successfully transfer photos from Facebook to Google+. All the photos went into the right albums, which was all I really wanted.

How To Locate An Electrical Short In The Home Home And Family Advice
When you have an electrical short in your house, perhaps you are experiencing a lot of blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers. It is also common to hear a popping sound, which may be fairly loud, whenever the circuit becomes activated. A short circuit happens when you develop an erroneous connection within one of the circuits, which happens when an electric path has developed accidentally in the circuit. If you think that somewhere in your house there is an electrical short, it should be located and repaired immediately. If not attended to, an electrical short can cause wire damage a result of the insulation melting, circuit damage, or possibly a fire. Should you be comfortable working around electricity, you can use the following steps to find and repair the electrical short yourself. If you are not comfortable, then you definitely should call an authorized electrician.
Things To Check First
When you are attempting to find the place that the electrical short is, a first good step is to check your appliances. If you know which appliances you were using as soon as the short occurred, unplug these appliances. Next, reset the circuit breaker or change the fuse that is connected to the circuit which has supplied electricity to your appliances. Energize the circuit, being sure that the fuse fails to blow or the circuit breaker won?t trip. If You Have a Short In Your Wiring

Before you can proceed, you need to use a volt/ohm meter to check the voltage and make certain that your circuit is switched off. When you verify that your meter registers zero and there?s no voltage showing, then remove your receptacle and pull the wires out by using a screwdriver and pliers. Adjust your volt/ohm meter so that it will now measure ohms. Connect one of the leads to the bare end of the black wire, and then the other lead to the bare ends of the white wire. If the reading that you get on your meter shows O.L. (infinite ohms), that is a sign the receptacle itself should be replaced. The short is probably in the wire or circuit breaker if your volt/ohm meter shows continuity. If this is the situation, the main breaker needs to be turned off to further investigate the problem. At this stage, calling an electrician is generally the best option in the interest of safety. The electrician can spot which fuse or breaker connection is bringing about the problem and remove the wires If the wire is shorted or the breaker is defective, an electrician is able to safely make the repair then test to verify the problem is completely resolved.
Now that you know how to identify an electrical short in your house, you can better protect your home and family from a catastrophic fire caused by an electrical problem.
